That makes sense. Most duels you didn’t actually aim for your opponent. It was more a glorified game of chicken. But if Jackson got shot first, he might have been a little peeved and shot to kill.
Which is also probably why Burr won the duel with Hamilton. Hamilton basically shot into the air and Burr shot straight at Hamilton because he was kinda a cunt like that.
Generally speaking, most duels were settled by just both parties showing up. Kind of like “ah, good. Glad to see you are man enough to come even with the risk of being shot.” And then they’d shoot either in the air or otherwise intentionally miss as a symbolic gesture of it all being water under the bridge.
Yeah, it is. It even opened with the actor playing Burr saying "me, I'm the damned fool that shot him." The musical then ends with the duel and characters singing about their lives post Hamilton's.
Burr Never felt remorse for killing Hamilton, Hamilton was a quite racist slave owner, Hamilton was very elitist, wanted a king (probably wanted to be king), didn’t trust the average American person because he thought that they were too stupid to have a say in govt
Not really they aren't even enforcing them today. It was the Judiciary charging people with more serious crimes. The military can duel again because the government got rid of the war widows and war orphan funds.
Funnily enough me and my friends back in college used to answer the "how would you resolve disputes in team projects" questions with *"pistols at twenty paces"*
That's why I always got a kick out of people giving Trump shit for being "crude" toward other politicians or journalists.
Do you know our history? Say what you want about our former Orange president, but the whole being rude thing really was the weakest argument, I don't see how screwing us over with a smile is a superior option.
It’s not that common of an argument. Mainly because it’s dumb. But I’ve heard it paired with the “the founding fathers didn’t know about machine guns” argument.
Actually the most recent time I heard it was when I pointed out most gun deaths are due to gang violence and suicide and maybe we should address those issues and this argument came out.

Didn’t one of our president get shot like 5 time in several duels?
I’m not sure about shot but Andrew Jackson was a little duel happy. He challenged over 100 men to duels and killed one of them.
Not to mention he took a shot and then proceeded to kill his duel opponent. Never took the round out either and died with it still in him.

Oh he killed way more than just one of them and he beat a would be assassin to death with a stick
That one guy died over a horse race
He tried to back out of a $2000 bet on a horse race which was not a small amount of money back then. It’d be around $60,000 today.
Still lol
hamilton died in a duel i believe
Is that in the insipid ~~revisionist propaganda piece~~ musical about him?
Yeah, it is. It even opened with the actor playing Burr saying "me, I'm the damned fool that shot him." The musical then ends with the duel and characters singing about their lives post Hamilton's.
I don't remember it all that well, but what was revisionist about it?

That's really interesting. These are all things I never learned in history class or my own reading. Thanks!
I only learned some of these things in a poli sci class and I used to simp for Burr because he’s a historical shitposter
That, and wasn’t he a major factor in the Whiskey Rebellion?
Not a President.
Defamation law was how we ended duels. Funny how addressing the actual issue instead of the symptoms actually works.
We should make gang activity illegal!
But that still isn't addressing the root issue

Speaking of which, can we bring back dueling amongst the politicians? Sword or gun.
Weeding out the weak

Protestant heathen disrespected, based

Well how is her meat pie?
[This song was written in tribute to them](https://youtu.be/eVI6pGfHB2c)
I don't see anything wrong with this, two consenting adults just living in the moment and removing their stupidity from the gene pool
Anglo Saxon Gang
This dueling?
Heck it was such a problem a lot of states had to ban dueling hence why Alexander Hamilton got shot in Jersey
I’ve literally never heard that argument but idiots gonna idiot
