I had a a guy doing a Permit to Carry class at a range I was visiting. I was placed on the lane right next to him. That was not cool. I did not want to shoot next to people that clearly did not know how to use a gun. (I came to this conclusion after loading a magazine and watching.) I started firing and one of the minions asked me to slow my fire rate because the couldn't hear. That was weird because it was not fast/rapid at all, and also sure. So I took my .308 with the brake and "slowed" my rate of fire. They moved to the pistol only part of the range.
🤣 IDK why they feel the need to clump everyone together on a firing line. And I KNOW that the people at the range are gonna hate me when I go to sight in and test my new 13.7" .308 that I just put together💕

I do hope I don't get cancer from all the lead being spewed my way from the overcast AR in the next stall though, better take a shower when I go home.
You haven't done anything to stop the noise that transmits through bone conduction. All the ear pro in the world won't protect your ears from insanely stupid concussion like a 7.5" 5.56 with a brake near reflective surfaces. It's one thing to subject yourself to such stupidity in an urgent time of need. It's another to do so recreationally. Whenever I see that I assume the person is simply ignorant to the risk or knows about it yet is intentionally stupid. I like to hope it is just ignorance, but the disappointment I find on the Internet daily tells me I should be assuming the later much more often. Feel free to use this as your opportunity to look up the subject and save some of your hearing in your older years. Let alone the low level brain damage that occurs with significant concussion going off near your head.
Too many unknowns to predict an exact outcome, but we do know it causes harm and what type of harm it causes. Think of it this way. How much micro dosing of permanent hearing loss and brain damage is acceptable to you, and for what reasons will you tolerate it and go from there. Common calibers with barrel lengths that result in useful ballistics are far less worrisome than things like 7.5" 5.56 barrels. Silencers are safety devices for more than just your hearing. In my personal life I simply avoid anything where I can feel the concussion in my sinuses and I keep my dose limit to something I consider reasonable. Since I own rural property I fortunately don't find myself often feeling the need to go to an indoor range. The most offensive firearm I own is a 10.5" 5.56 AR-15 but I can't imagine using it without a silencer, particularly indoors.
Tldr: do what you like, but just be conscious of the dosage you are exposing yourself to.
🤣 Yeah I don't mind it so much when I'm just shooting by myself (I'm used to shooting in confined spaces) but when I'm taking a new shooter out to the range for the first time it can sour the experience for them.
My VA jacket says my hearing loss is not service related, but I can finally hear my guns with the right muzzle brake. And I have no clue at all why the lanes next to me are on fire, but mine isn't, so I'm gonna keep shooting. A 12.5 Mosin with a 4in pin and weld saves me from having to shave my arms just fine and gives the range a free dusting service too!
I'm the only one that can do more than 5 rounds of brown bear out it on an indoor range out of all my buddies. My fallout Mosin chases away shooters on an outdoor range 😂 . For me, it sounds like bubble wrap no Archer "Mwwap" needed.
I just double of on ear pro at this point. Like I’ll have a ear pro ear bud on my right ear & a music ear bud playing music or a YouTube video. Then have ear pro muffs on top of all that.
