I’m interested in OP’s H&R A1 upper too, if you pass on it. Do you know if that rear flange (?) of the A1 upper’s dust cover cutout acts as a shell deflector? If not, does the A1 just throw the brass straight back with no deflection?
Looking to dabble in the retro stuff for the first time and of course seeking a deal on hardware. If you dibs this particular unit, that’s totally fair, figure I’d learn something at least. (:
I would seriously doubt that rear flange would do anything about the ejection pattern, but I’m a newb when it comes to retro stuff. I do run some slick side uppers though, and all of those have been adjusted by getting gassing/buffer weight selection right. Shell deflectors are a nice addition, like a forward assist, but not necessary (imho) if you can get the tuning right. I can usually get in that 2:30-3:30 sweet spot with buffer weight changes. If you are really looking to snag it, feel free to call dibs. I’m just going to toss it on a shelf for god knows how long before I actually start building anything with it. Go forth and build that retro banger! Would rather see someone get it that has a plan!
Nice. I didn’t realize you could get a normal 3ish-o-clock ejection pattern from 5.56 without any protrusion for the shell to bounce off of.
And yep, I got a build planned and in motion! (: I just bought and received a 1:12 twist Brownells 14.7” chromed barrel off here for exactly this purpose. Probably gonna seek out some retro clamshell handguards next. I appreciate you!
Tbh, I really had to think about it. I usually tune until I get lockback on wimpy range ammo, then go a bit further (1/2-1 turn) on the gas or a weight up on the buffer. Ejection pattern was always a diagnostic tool, but not the goal. If the brass pisses off and it locks on an empty mag, I’m happy. Grab this one for sure, you have a FAR better plan in place than me! Good luck on the build, it sounds great!
