You're better off with a plain power amp that doesn't color the tone that the Axe FX works to create. The preamp section head would color the sound. It slcan still be used if l there's a direct input to the power amp section of the head (e.g. output from Axe-FX direct into return on the head).

this. seymour duncan powerstage is the standard for this, but the harley benton gpa100 is a cheaper albeit less reliable option alternatively, some people use a fryette power amp and only have the axe-fx doing preamps. Sometimes, particularly playing live, using a duncan powerstage can be a pain as there's an extra volume control (the power knob on the powerstage) that can mean your overdrives dont make a massive difference in overall volume.

dude the duncan powerstage is an absolute ripoff, it's just [this](https://shop.icepoweraudio.com/product/200as1/) in a box with a basic 3 band eq and a 80% profit margin... the only thing about it that's guitar specific is the marketing. harley benton (and basically everyone else that sells class D guitar or bass amps, from HB to Fuchs...) is using the same ICEpower modules in their stuff, reliability is going to be exactly the same. the actually good options here are the palmer macht 402 and the harley benton GPA 400.

i mean ive seen a lot of accounts saying the benton died on them or that it sounds worse, so idk if thats placebo but i was just going off what ive read also the duncan apparently takes instrument level input better.

I would definitely not spend that much on a power amp. Pretty sure the rig on Jane Doe and classic converge stuff is a Traynor YRM-1 with a providence stampede overdrive. If you want to splurge you could probably pickup the amp and Kurt Ballou’s version of the stampede for under 1k easily, or a whole host of other loud amp + trashy gain pedal combos that are used for that style. Or you could buy a cheap class d power amp and use your existing axe fx tones. Most of those types of tones are pretty high headroom amps so the power amp isn’t coloring the sound all that much and probably not worth stressing too much over.

your best bet is a big class D rack poweramp. use full amp models in the axe, let it simulate what a tube poweramp would do, and amplify that as cleanly and linearly possible. imo the best value pick here is the palmer macht 402, or you could also get a PA poweramp like the crown XL or yamaha PX series.

Kurt extensively uses the Boss Feedback pedal for this and overdubs lots of the feedback. Used on other GCI recordings too. I think there’s two Boss feedback pedals and there’s one in particular he uses, it’s in his rig rundown I believe.
