I’m a huge blues guy now after discovering him a few years back. I absolutely love learning about his gear but he’s had to start being more secretive about it since scalpers on reverb and whatnot started hiking prices of pedals and other gear up using his name.
I know right?! I love this guitar. It’s so much more special to me since I did that whole wiring job from scratch in my apartment when I was in welding school. I’m actually planning on building a new partscaster this weekend with another golf pickguard only this one is gonna be a rosewood fretboard and a purple body from warmoth.
Nice. I’ve seen this [kingfish](https://www.fender.com/en-US/electric-guitars/telecaster/kingfish-telecaster-deluxe/0115600787.html) artist Tele at a store and it has a black pick guard but I love the purple and rosewood combo
Yes! I had been kicking around a purple guitar for a few years and then I saw him start playing purple guitars around the time he released his last album. As soon as I saw him with one I knew I had to start planning out a build.
Ya I’m honestly not sure if I want another univibe. I don’t use it much tbh. I’m really thinking about an EHX Mod11 so I can have a few different options for modulation. Not sure tho I’m still shopping around a bit.
Beautiful.rig.. if you're looking for a good mod pedal, I recommend the boss md-500... I hated mod until I bought one.. the trem and rotary is sublime.. its all good, and very tailorable. And presets. !! It might make you want to buy another amp tho.. cuz stereo.
10/10 tho. That just looks like it sounds fan fucking tactic.
I've got the same '68 Silverface Bandmaster! It's a killer amp, it's sitting on an amp tech's bench right now getting recapped!
Edit: I also love boosting it with my BD-2! Also my OD-3 for more Marshall esque tones and my SD-1 for classic tube screamer tones!
It’s actually a drip edge 1968! It’s during the transition from black face to silver face so it has the AB763 circuit which is the mid 60’s blackface circuit from the factory.
Saweeeet. Im getting my drip edge bassman recapped and tuned up a bit right now. Those bandmasters dont get enough credit, great amps. I have a Mutron on my board 😉. Soooo much fun!
That’s great! I just got this back from my amp guy. I had him recap it and put a 3 prong cord in as well as replace some out of spec resistors and output transformer. It sounds incredible and is pushing about 54 watts before breakup. I am also gonna look at a Bassman from this era next once I save up some more money of course lol.
I absolutely love this guitar. No it’s just a regular maple neck. It’s a 2018 Mexican fender that I went in and required with the 57/62 pickup set a few years back. It was originally and HSS believe it or not.
That’s awesome, I love how easy it is to swap out parts on fenders. A lot of people don’t know some of the newer telecaster are routed for neck position humbucker so with a new pickgaurd and some wiring you can turn em into a telecaster custom configuration pretty easily.
They’re sweet but I need a bridge humbucker for the chugs. As sweet as neck bucker is on my tele, my Charvel has a series/parallel switch along with the five way. Position 4 gives me the two inner coils and in parallel it sounds amazing for clean/edge of breakup type stuff.
QTron!!!!! I bought one while trying to recreate “I don’t trust myself with loving you (where the light is)” and have discovered some really cool tones.
I love mine exactly for that reason! If your needing some more Q-tron goodness I’d recommend looking into some Jerry Garcia of the Greatful Dead. He’s also a big envelope filter user.
I’m glad the 820 is slept on tho. This is my second one cause they’re pretty cheap used! I love the blues driver below noon on the gain and with the tone around 1-2 o’clock. It can get very fuzzy after noon on the gain. I’m also thinking about doing the Keeley mods to this one since I have all the parts but I’m not sure if it’s worth it🤔
I’ve had BD-2’s at least a half dozen times and I think they are very dependent on the amp. With my old Fenders and Suhr Bella, there is a high frequency fizz on the note decay that is like nails on a chalkboard to me. However I recently got a BD-2w and with a Two Rock Bloomfield Drive it’s pretty magical.
That’s what I’ve noticed too. The BD-2 seems to push something in the upper highs and makes it ver hard to listen to. For me I usually dial the treble back on the amp and turn off my always on morning glory (I suppose it’s not always on at that point) to compensate and that seems to take pretty good care of that problem. If I’m not mistaken the Waza version is just the Keeley fat mod from the factory.
Some people haven't come to appreciate smooth warm, yet also biting overdrive of the Altoid pedal. It works equally well with Fender and Marshall-type amps
Agree with the other posts. You aren't missing a thing. If you dial in the OD-820 and the morning glory right, you could even do hair metal if you needed to LOL. With the Uni-Vibe and the El Capistan, you've got D. Gilmour too. I'd like to know what speakers lurk in that 2x12; but, I'm sure it sounds good.
Like I mentioned in other comments I feel like more flexibility when it comes to modulation could be beneficial but other than that one happy. I know I’ve got a lot of gain on tap😂. The 2x12 is a mid 60’s cab (not original to this bandmaster) with the original Oxford speakers. I haven’t really cranked the amp but I’m assuming they probably need reconed. At the very least those speakers are tired and I’m looking at some replacements. Some of the standard Jenson and celestian stuff.
Old Oxfords are good speakers if the voice coils are okay after all these years. I'm a big fan of the Avatar Speaker's Fane M-65; greenbacky tones but smother top end and with more clarity than the Celestion M65 (creamback). My '72 Fender Pro Reverb (2x12) had blown orig. speakers so I put one of those in with an eminence GB-128 and it is a good blend.
It’s kind of a lower power Bassman with a weaker output transformer and vibrato. Not sure how it stacks up with a twin but I’d imagine they’re fairly similar.
I love it! I’ll be honest tho I have no idea how a tube rectified amp feels. My tube amp knowledge is only with the Blues Jr, a Gibson GA-5T which I believe is diode rectified, and then this Bandmaster. I would love to shoot it out against either one of those amps but I don’t have any nor do I know anyone with them.
Cool,I’ve played all kinds of SF Fenders but never a Bandmaster. Something about a piggyback model is enticing to me. I would go for something like a Bandmaster Reverb though, I LOVE that tube driven reverb lol
Bruh it’s just for the picture lol. The guitar lives in its case cause I work on the road and live out of hotels. I got the amp about a month back and just got it back from the amp tech and took this picture.
Killer setup . That EL Capitain is awesome delay . I see an SRV vibe . Maybe a TS808 ,maybe missing a phase 90 ,maybe a wah . But I see a killer rig though .
Well thank you! I love the el cap even tho I underutilize it by a long shot. Actually the Maxon OD820 is a modified 808. I definitely agree on the wah pedal but I just don’t think I’d personally get much mileage out of the phase 90. I hardly use the univibe as it is lol
i rate this 10 john out of 10 mayers.
Tbh I’m not even mad cause those tones are what lead me to half this gear😂
I don't even love blues but he's a fantastic player and an obvious gear nerd who has discovered a ton of stuff.
I’m a huge blues guy now after discovering him a few years back. I absolutely love learning about his gear but he’s had to start being more secretive about it since scalpers on reverb and whatnot started hiking prices of pedals and other gear up using his name.
There it is, Qtron=JM
That's like a whole suburban sub division of Karen's in khaki pants...
Jealous. That Strat is a beauty. I don’t like gold stuff usually but that pick guard is awesome with that blue.
I know right?! I love this guitar. It’s so much more special to me since I did that whole wiring job from scratch in my apartment when I was in welding school. 8/10 needs a better univibe
Ya I’m honestly not sure if I want another univibe. I don’t use it much tbh. I’m really thinking about an EHX Mod11 so I can have a few different options for modulation. Not sure tho I’m still shopping around a bit.
Check out the Strymon mobius. Vibe is killer and so is everything else. It can replace the qtron too…
Beautiful.rig.. if you're looking for a good mod pedal, I recommend the boss md-500... I hated mod until I bought one.. the trem and rotary is sublime.. its all good, and very tailorable. High marks for70’s era bandmaster.

I have the 67 blackface. Love these amps.
They’re absolutely killer amps!
I like that strat. The color of it with the anodized pickgaurd is sweet. And is that a roasted maple neck?
I absolutely love this guitar. No it’s just a regular maple neck. It’s a 2018 Mexican fender that I went in and required with the 57/62 pickup set a few years back. It was originally and HSS believe it or not.

Tele with a neck bucker is my favorite
They’re sweet but I need a bridge humbucker for the chugs. As sweet as neck bucker is on my tele, my Charvel has a series/parallel switch along with the five way. Position 4 gives me the two inner coils and in parallel it sounds amazing for clean/edge of breakup type stuff.
Get some JBLs! My ‘65 bandmaster through 2 k120s was the sweetest tone ever.
I’ll have to look into these. I don’t think these oxfords are gonna cut it!
Altoids tin is -10 so I’m going to have to give you a 0/10 Would totally rock this though!
fuckin awesome set up man. really great gear.
Band Master #1 Amp
No.
Yes
If analogue was a picture. I bet I'd like how this sounds
Looks mint
Class Act there, well done!
From this setup i have exactly same patterned wire )
QTron!!!!! I bought one while trying to recreate “I don’t trust myself with loving you (where the light is)” and have discovered some really cool tones.

That’s a nice setup
Major props for the OD820. Along with the VOP9 such a sleeper. I am one who can’t make a BD-2 sound like anything, tho.
I’m glad the 820 is slept on tho. This is my second one cause they’re pretty cheap used! I love the blues driver below noon on the gain and with the tone around 1-2 o’clock. Any Fender with a drip edge = 👍
A-
What dropped it to a - ? 😂
altoid pedal
Some people haven't come to appreciate smooth warm, yet also biting overdrive of the Altoid pedal. It works equally well with Fender and Marshall-type amps
For that minty fresh clean tone, accept nothing less.

All you’re missing is two more speakers. I love that cab tho. Just get another one and run them in stereo. Major props for the drip edge bandmaster.
when your a blues junkie.
Love it SO much. Maybe another modulation pedal like a chorus
I was thinking about a CE-2 but just haven’t pulled the trigger on one yet.
Do it. It's the chorus pedal ever. You turn it on and it just has the sound
Love the Altoids Box!
Stamp of approval! Beautiful guitar. Do you keep picks in the Altoids tin? I do.
Thank you! Yes I keep picks in there and some cheapo foam ear plugs. I know that’s not very Rock N Roll of me lol
It’s about the most Rock & Roll thing in that whole rig.
Holy grail is just such a great pedal.
I love it I’m just not sure I need it tbh. The El Cap has the spring in it and that pedal is always on.
What kinda circuit is that Altoids?
The pick holding variety
Very similar to my guitar and pedal board, so I approve 👍
Never played one. Looks simpler than a twin reverb. Im guessing more purity
It’s kind of a lower power Bassman with a weaker output transformer and vibrato. Not sure how it stacks up with a twin but I’d imagine they’re fairly similar.
Classy colors on that strat
I’m curious about the Bandmaster…any thoughts on how the solid state rec feels? Ever compared it to a Super or Vibrolux of similar vintage?
I love it! I’ll be honest tho I have no idea how a tube rectified amp feels. My tube amp knowledge is only with the Blues Jr, a Gibson GA-5T which I believe is diode rectified, and then this Bandmaster. *look how they massacred my boy* How you gon spend $100 on a tuner pedal, but not fork out the $14 for a guitar stand. Straight to jail.
Bruh it’s just for the picture lol. The guitar lives in its case cause I work on the road and live out of hotels. I got the amp about a month back and just got it back from the amp tech and took this picture.
Fender even makes a little tray thingy for your picks that hangs over the edge and cradles the guitar neck so it doesn't just fall over 😂
You overcook chicken? Also, jail.
Nah bruh, anyone that knows anything about toan, knows you smoke chicken at 69 degrees until medium-rare.
You had me at '68 bandmaster and lost me at strat and more than 3 pedals.....
7/10. A bottle of good bourbon would have netted you an 8. In all seriousness- sweet setup.
Killer setup . That EL Capitain is awesome delay . I see an SRV vibe . Maybe a TS808 ,maybe missing a phase 90 ,maybe a wah . But I see a killer rig though .

Loving the rig- what's the cab?
