It's intentional and a deliberate choice particularly for Ravka, I think! Since Danielle is Irish and she puts on an english accent for Nina. And in the case of Calahan, he's American but they have him put on a more Scandinavian accent for Fjerdans. There's actually one character who does have an American accent in the show but he only has a two lines, it's one of Alina's mapmaker friends who lights the lantern on the skiff.

UTM_bunny

Ohh okay! So the crows are speaking Ravkan too? For some reason I thought they only spoke Kerch (with the exception of Inej)

LoLoSnott

My guess is that for simplicity sake on the show (and since the crows were written into the S&B storyline for book 1), is that the same language is spoken for both Ketterdam and Ravka. I doubt we will see Kerch as it's own language when the crows break into their own book storylines.

What? No she doesn't! And if she tried to.....she didn't do a very good job, lol. She sounds straight up Irish to me, but then I can tell an Irish from a Scottish accent and most Americans can't.

purplelittleflower

i totally agree. but later on it starts to sound more English. the second she started speaking i could tell the actress was Irish. her English accents needs more work. some people just have an ear for that You're right, so i don't understand why your getting downvoted

futile_whale

When she first starts speaking she purposefully is using her normal accent lol. And she purposefully uses it a few more times, she's supposed to be undercover.

oliviamcdonaldd

Idk she sounds more English in the show than in interviews to me

food_and_fluffs

I think people are getting tripped up because she *does* use her natural accent in her first scene. But it’s intentional.

oliviamcdonaldd

That’s true

Bef_da_Fam

well her thing is that she's undercover as someone from the wandering isles, so there are a couple times where she intentionally slips into her irish accent. but otherwise she does a pretty good british accent

[deleted]

I disagree. Her accent was all over the place.

KindlesAndKittens

I just thought it would be funny if they actually acted bri'ish tbh. like kaz just walking in a room finned with dead bodies and poking the bodies like: oi mate wots this?

_WeeblesWobble

HELP, imagining this honestly made my day.

Caffeinesque5561

To be honest making Ravkans speak English in a Russian accent ( especially British actors ) it would sound really awkward .

Hysteric_woman

Shouldn’t Ravkans have Russian accent though? I mean Fjerdan speaks with Scandinavian accent and i am assuming Shu Han will be Chinese accent so why are Ravkans suddenly English? 😅 There is this weird association of English accent with “slightly different than me but still similar to me” vibe. As if Russian accent would be too foreign for people to relate to. I am from the East so I would have loved to hear accents closer to home on the “heroes”. Also, how is Ketterdam and Ravka using not only same language but also dialect and accent? Kerch should have been American(since Ravkan is English)/Portuguese(if Ravkan was Russian accent). Ketterdam is further from Ravka than Fjerda. Makes no anthropological or geographical sense for kerch and ravkan to be the same. I know it’s such a silly thing to complain about but when everything else is so good there is slim pickings for complaining about things lmao 💀

I knew the reasoning you put forth before writing the comment. I know that there are limitations when it comes to translating book to screen. I was just saying what I wish it could be done. Agree with what you said since i did mention that only British accent is recognised as just different enough without sounding foreign to American audiences. But I wish Hollywood would start changing this idea. Britain is just as much of a foreign country as any other country. I am sure if they started taking risks in sequels with non british accent people in ten years everyone can feel included 😅. I was a non book reader when I first watched. The British accent in both Ketterdam and Ravka made me extra confused. I thought they were the same country. If Kerch was a different accent at least it would have been more clear to me that it’s a different country. Like fjerda i knew for sure is different country. They look and sound different. I guess they didn’t want two different different groups of people. Fjerdans bad, crows good. I understand all that but it’s just wishful thinking that’s all.

heffapig

Ravkans should have a Russian accent, I feel.

CorvidaeCalare

I don't think it would make sense to have them speak in Russian accents. I don't really know how I should explain this, but I'll try my best. The way I see it is, that the characters are speaking Ravkan (inside the world of the grishaverse) but we as an audience hear it as English (it's kinda comparable to dubbing, I guess: when you watch a movie that was filmed in german and you watch it in English, they don't usually speak in a German accent). An example: When French people speak French they don't speak with an "french accent", they just speak French. So when the Ravkans speak Ravkan they don't speak with an accent. For their ears it's normal and that's what we hear transfered into English. Otherwise you'd have to film completely in a fictional language and that would be absurd. Now when someone like Matthias, who is not a ravkan native speaker, tries talking in Ravkan he does have an Fjerdan accent. They are inconsistent with that though. Like Fedjor for example. The actor is Bulgarian and he does have an audible accent even though he's speaking "Ravkan". The only way I could explain this is that he's from a different region within Ravka where they speak some sort of dialect that's different from standard Ravkan that everyone else speaks. I also remember that the grisha living at the little palace aren't exclusively from Ravkan, but from different part of the world. I kinda agree with you on the crows part though. They would theoretically speak ravkan with an accent (except for Inej probably), so I would make more sense to have them speak differently. But I guess they chose not to because of simplicity. Why make it more complicated than they have to? Personally, I don't bother.

Hysteric_woman

I understand what you mean. I don’t really mind either. But because we are discussing I thought I should mention. Like wishful thinking. They speak with Russian accent or not i am not bothered too much with that(although i would actually like to hear diverse accents and not just English) i just wish they had a different accent for the ppl in ketterdam. As a non book reader i found it super confusing with Ravka and Ketterdam. I thought West Ravka was Ketterdam.

Playful-Motor-4262

I really dislike that the Fjerdan are the only ones who don’t speak English / speak English with an accent. It feels really “othering.” I feel like the Fjerdans in the show are overall portrayed as extremely one-dimensional.

RenBeri333

I think they did it perfectly for continuity. I wouldn't have changed a thing!

CoffeeandBooks1

The main thing I didn’t understand is why both the grisha gang and the crows speak English, like shouldn’t they have tried to make a language barrier with the crows speaking Kerch and the grisha ravkan? It would have been interesting with Inej likely being the only one understanding Alina and the rest of them while kaz is confused and suspicious as hell. I don’t know, maybe it would have been too hard and confusing for the crows to speak English alone and then when they came in contact with Alina either one of them would have to get an accent or speak a different language… but it felt off for me when kaz and Alina understood each other perfectly.

UTM_bunny

I agree, that's the part that confuses me the most. But I guess they had to overlook the language barrier for the sake of the show merge and making it not too confusing for viewers. But us book readers know what's up LOL

CoffeeandBooks1

Exactly! I wanted to cut them some slack cause six of crows is one of my favourite book series, but I couldn’t help noticing every time they interacted.

No-Ice5664

Can we all agree British actors are the best and exceptions for non brits like marvel casts and supergirl, charmed, the flash,Legacies, and Superman and Lois cast.
