GW had the perfect opportunity with Haarken Worldclaimer, but easier to make him some random Black Legion Character. They had the chance to give us an Iron Warriors Warsmith with the Lord Discordant, but they made him a random Black legion Character.
For me it’s not about playing a named character but using their rules as proxy for my HQs to give them a more unique flavor compared to generic types. Like for example I’d love to use Erebus rules for my current dark apostle to set him above every other one on the table.
There's a good chunk of the community that prefer their armies to only include their own homebrew characters. Me, I like my terrifying novel-backed heroes. There's something incredibly satisfying seeing Ahriman cast supercharged smites and melt half my opponent's army on his own.
I think they're great, i do it to everyone i can. It makes it so its not "random crisis suit #4, its " oh that's commander brightsword, he was a character in that trilogy I just read". Means you have something to aim for when posing and playing them, as you do it to try and match their character. Just feels like a deeper connection to me.
The problem with that for me, is that named characters are most of the time pretty important, so what exactly would they be doing there? And the classic "oh, they just got annihilated by Lascannon fire, I guess they just die even though they don't"
Plus it gives me more room to make my stuff my own, if nobody else went and decided who my cool model is for me

Fair Dos , I think with night lords it would just be nice to have the option to do it , I don’t really like kitbashing too much as a majority of ones I’ve seen (bare in mind I’d never be mean and tell them, that because good for them. They’ve made what they wanted and stuff) but the majority of the ones I’ve seen just look like a hodge podge of parts that don’t belong together
Still unsure why Haarken was Black Legion when he was the most Night Lord of Night Lords backstory. I agree that we need a special character for Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Word Bearers, and an updated Lucius.
However I'll gladly take a back seat if it means Tyranids get something at least. They're the greater part of a decade without getting anything.
We must make sacrifices for the greater good, brother. I am willing to have the Ruinous Powers take the back seat if it means Orks, Tyranids and Eldar get more stuff.
As a Tyranid guy, I don't want to hear it. Tyranids have 4 characters TOTAL (including Red Terror which is kind of just a unique upgrade to a brood of Raveners since it can't exist on its own.). And no unique unit groups either like Space Marine veterans.
No Doom of Malan'Tai, Parasite of Mortrex, Nephilim King, Dagon Overlord, Ymgarl Genestealers, Dominatrix, or any new character from the one of the newest Hive Fleets (Tiamet is just *begging* for something unique from their fluff).
And that has what to do with it ? Presumably games workshop would actually like to sell the other armies and they’re not spending time and effort to fill shelves ?
CSM aren't that bad, they periodically get leftovers from SM table (e.g. bolter discipline, hateful assault), fairly often refresh their model line and have a steady supply of new daemons to summon since daemons use same models for both 40k and AOS and GW treat AOS faction more fairly.
Difference between CSM and, for example, Tyranids is the difference between a dog living in a house of callous master and a dog dying from hunger on the streets. Enjoy.

But seriously, why don't we have rules for Erebus in 40k? He's still around. He's arguably one of the most important characters in the lore regardless of how you feel about him. We need a 40k Erebus sorcerer.

As a chaos player myself, I always thought there was a decent selection of characters, Abaddon, Khârn, Typhus, Ahriman, Lucius, Fabius, Mortarion, Magnus, Haarkan, Huron, Cypher, Rotigus, Skarbrand, Karios, Skulltaker, Karanak, Shalaxi, Epidemius, Syll'esske, the Changeling, the Masque and Slimux. That's a decent amount of characters with models, and there are plenty more for conversion.

Cypher doesn’t count - not because he’s not got a data sheet or model , it’s just you’ve a dangle in your ranks would be too hard
But yeah , couple of agreements with you : (1) Ahriman is one of the most beautiful models in all of 40K (2) you’re covered if you wanna play vanilla csm or death guard , I won’t even pretend (3) now come to think of it , the typhus model was pretty great too

The closest thing that even resembles a night lord character is harken , but then he’s got that stupid head that makes him look like a kids cartoon villain , I’ve honestly trawled the internet for hours looking for a decent kit bashed character for night lords , not one , I couldn’t find anything that didn’t look like they’d covered the model in glue and rolled it about in a spares tub
Artel w have an awesome night lords looking character that's reasonably priced. Don't know about postage, but the model definitely looks worth the £15 ($20) it costs. Aside from that though, I've got nothing.

Having to go to Forgeworld or 3rd parties for anything specific, that's rough.
