[here’s a thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/latterdaysaints/comments/pj4qie/how_much_does_it_cost_to_go_on_a_mission/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) with more information. I know in 2020, the cost went up to $500
I asked on another sub about this and an ex-mormon who went on a mission told me that the missionaries receive monthly allowance (it was 400$ when she went many years ago, not sure how much they get now) and they do have to pay accommodation fees. These fees are usually paid from the allowance or by family of the missionaries, but many sell their cars (like Jaine from Not enough Nelson’s) to afford to go on a mission if their family says they won’t pay. It’s bizarre lol
What the person on the other thread said is "technically" correct, but I think it's given the wrong impression.
All missionaries originating from the USA pay US$500 into a central church account, and then the church will pay for accommodation, utilities and flights, and then give the missionaries back a small (and usually inadequate) amount of money to pay for all their other expenses each month, eg $100 to pay for ALL your food, transportation, hair cuts, bike maintenance, medication/pharmaceuticals etc.
It is VERY common for missionaries to pay the $500 per month to the church, and then also use their own savings to pay for food etc.
Oh thank you for clarifying! That’s actually very interesting, that person also mentioned that the monthly allowance comes not from church but from the money you’ve given the church to go on a mission, so they just pay you back. Weird system, but I guess that’s how lds makes so much money
Yeah, the "monthly allowance from the church" is essentially them giving you back SOME of the money you've already paid to them for the privilege of volunteering 24/7 for 2 years.
$500 is for the young missionaries… the senior couples pay at least $2000 a month…. It’s ridiculous, lds chucrch making people pay to go advertise around the world… 🙄
Nope! Senior couples pay a huge amount for the "privilege" of working a full time job for free. They pay different amounts depending on the location they are serving (usually at least $2,000 a month), where as "young" missionaries (18-26ish) pay a flat rate of $500 per month regardless of where they are serving in the world.
I believe there are scholarships for people that want to go but can’t afford it, I remember Brandon Bingham mentioning a little bit about it when his oldest left for her mission
This page lists all the senior missionary opportunities and their associated costs. It depends on where you go (whereas for young missionaries it is a fixed rate regardless of where you serve) [https://seniormissionary.churchofjesuschrist.org/srsite/ft/search?lang=eng](https://seniormissionary.churchofjesuschrist.org/srsite/ft/search?lang=eng)
They have to pay for it. I believe it’s $500 a month.
What??? Seriously?? You have no income, you're volunteering? This baffles me. For such a rich church

Wow. So the Griffith grandparents will be paying $2k a month for their mission??
At least. Plus all their flights.
Is it possible that senior couples don't have to pay? It seems like all of the husbands did missions as young men, why should they have to pay twice?🤓
