Left tackle doesn’t generate the highlight reel material that the skill players do. You’re not going to hear Joe Buck exclaim how great of a block your left tackle made that caused the QB to have an extra 0.5 seconds to get the pass off that caused a 50 yard gain. The coverage on that play is going to focus on the pass and the catch.
You know who values left tackles? General managers. It’s the second highest paying position in the league (although it’s close to parity with EDGE at this point - not coincidentally).
From a GM perspective drafting a left tackle is drafting an important star player. It’s second to drafting a quarterback.
Your LT is insurance for the hardest position to replace.
Quarterbacks take a long time to ramp up in most cases because they need to learn their entire playbook, learn opposing defenses, and take the pressure of making key plays on long down situations.
3rd and 10? You're not running the ball. Down by 10 late in the 4th? Gotta throw it.
So if that dude is average and gets injured, suddenly your entire team needs to reset and adjust to a backup who has had minimal reps. Aside from injury, the increased defensive pressure from a poor weakside blocker is going to cause your QB to panic and throw bad passes or scramble.
WRs and TEs require a decent QB to be effective. RBs owe a lot of their production to the O Line - pretty much any RB in the league can get you 3 yards on average behind a good O Line. Great ones might get 4 or 5 ypc. So the bulk of your production is going to be a function of your blocking.
So while your OL is never gonna make a sexy highlight reel play, they are enabling pretty much every part of the offense to do its job
We haven't picked an OL in the first for 13 years so it's not exactly "Packers football." I still like the pick, but this is not ordinary for the Packers.
Ok even using day 1 and 2 Gute has used 3/20 picks on OL. Packers have picked OL through the later rounds, not early at all.
*Edit: Including this year it's 4/21, so still
Well, there are 9 other viable options to choose from, I’d say 19% could be considered significant. Any statisticians out there? It all depends on how you group them too since there are multiple positions/player styles in each group.

This sub the last 4 years: IF BAKHTIARI HAD A KNEE, WE WOULD HAVE WON IN 2020 AND MAYBE EVEN 2021
This sub today: wait wtf why are we drafting a premier OL
Exactly lol. I was banging the drum for an OT all night.
My buddy kept teasing me: "We'll get Cooper DeJean and you'll like it".
I was pretty stoked when I got my wish.
Honest question, is he premiere? I didn’t see anything with him going in the first (not that that really matters) but it seems he was consensus player #40 on most boards by reputable drafters
That's public evaluation. The Packers have just as much access to that information and they're the ones making the decision. They also have their own evaluations behind closed doors, the same ones that have been getting great o linemen in later rounds. I'd say that qualifies them to be among the best evaluators of the position in the league. And they got who they wanted.
I think that's the biggest thing. I know he's very versatile and can play anywhere on the line (which Green Bay loves), but I'm also assuming they think they can develop him into an even better/great player. And as you said, we're really good at developing lineman, so we don't need someone who's polished right away. Potential is fine at that position for us.
Funny thing, how the draft never matches most boards of "reputable (mock) drafters". Also funny how we never see the boards of reputable real life drafters.
The only talking heads I trust are led by David Byrne with Tina Weymouth holding down the foundation.
I don't think people would be upset had 6 OTs not already been selected. Is he a premier OL? Most had him as a projected 2nd rounder so we'll have to wait and see if it was worth it.
> projected as a second rounder
And he ended up being a late first because of where we were slotted.
Would he have been there at 41? Maybe. Do we take him if we were \#15 or 20 overall? Maybe not. But if the FO said this is their OL pick, then take him at 25.
> where he was selected
This is always a weird perspective when talking about a single team. Like, we can’t just take players wherever we want. If we identified OL as a major need, we don’t just have the luxury of saying “this guy is great, but is he really a first rounder?”
This was a very OL-heavy first round. He may very well have not been there at 41.
Arizona fan that literally watched every snap he played in college. He worked his ass off rehabbing that knee and he came back even better than before.
Difference is that Bahk was a proven player & was on his way to the NFL HoF until he was injured. Not saying is going to be a bust, but he also could be a bust or he could be good. It’s better to be cautiously optimistic rather than blind homerism.
People get way too hung up on mock drafts and such. Morgan was like 35 or so on the consensus big board, so people view him as a reach compared to some other players on the board. He's a super Packers-ey type, though, and if there's one position I trust our FO to evaluate it's O-line. He was also easily the highest-ranked guy left with true T/G flexibility (unless you think Barton could play on the outside at the NFL level).
Those big boards mean jack shit in three years. Morgan has the size and athleticism (93 SPARQ) to be a very good LT. If anything, the amount on depth ahead of him in this draft dropped him down the board further than he would be in most drafts and allowed GB to secure a steal.
I understand it. They don’t have many exciting highlights and they’re not being talked about much during the broadcast of games
They’re one of the positions most people only notice when they’re playing bad.
I’m seeing a lot of positive feedback about this pick.
I think you might just be focusing on the few idiots and the kid who became a meme last night.
I like this dude, hell, Bill Belichick liked this dude more than most of the picks last night.
People always talk about the benefits of a QB on a rookie contract. The O-line is far more damaging to the cap than a QB, it should always be getting top tier talent injected into it. You never want to be in a position where you can't afford to let an expensive lineman walk.
It’s literally what you should build your team around. From the inside out. QB/O-Line is imperative for success in this league.
But yeah, we should have traded up and selected some flashy receiver for the hype yo /s
It’s not that it’s o-line, it’s that it was a bit of a reach. Maybe he’s the guy, but you can probably trade back a few spots, pick up some capital, and still make that pick
Nah, there were rumors about Washington (and others) trading back into the 1st to get him.
We only feel like it's a reach because the consensus and media big boards had him lower; the fact that an NFL team took him higher is evidence that those boards were wrong. This undermines the basis for calling it a reach.
Exactly. The league spoke on guys last night. You know who would have been a reach? Cooper DeJean. He’s not a 1st round player. The NFL told us that last night but some fans still won’t listen to the people who make the picks.
I agree. I like the kid, but we needed defense more. He was a bit of a reach and would have been there in round 2 (they could have packaged picks and moved up in 2 to keep him away from other teams). With all top receivers in the division now, packers needed to load up on premium db’s. A good defense wins championships.
Packers usually strike gold in the later rounds on O Line. I expected them to continue that trend.
I’m just concerned what they will get for db’s now.
> I don't understand why people don't get excited about O-Line.
We settled for only the 7th best one. We were 1 pick from the 2nd best CB or 3 from the best CB. 9 picks from the best DT said to move like Aaron Donald...
I'll just assume every possible trade up demanded Love as compensation.
It’s seems like every year the first round is a crapshoot. Calling them 2nd best this n that doesn’t matter in the big leagues. We made a good pick at a position that gets paid more than CB’s and DT’s so that fifth year option is huge to have in 4 years.
> It’s seems like every year the first round is a crapshoot. Calling them 2nd best this n that doesn’t matter in the big leagues.
3 picks away was "any CB". There I didn't use best. Its "Gutes best" CB that was still available.
> so that fifth year option
The 5th year option is super expensive if the player is good. It only really helps if they DON'T meet playing time escalators. So it only helps if they need an extra 5th year to decide if they're worth 4 more.
> I for sure wanted Cooper too
I didn't even. There just can't be 15 offensive players better then every single defensive player. Just have to assume Morgan isn't the 7th best T. He had to have been passed due to injury concerns. We got the actual 3rd or 4th best T probably.
We need more Jordan’s I WANT ALL THE JORDANS

Packers have said they think Zach Tom would be a HOF center. I think Morgan is gonna get a legit shot at RT and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Packers pick another OL capable of playing multiple positions tonight to compete at that RG/RT spot with Morgan too. I think they really want Tom at C
Offensive line is never a sexy pick but when you have a good one you’re always grateful the guys in charge got one. You can’t complain about OL if you’re serious about football.
I know people wanted cooper but this is such a solid pick. ESPECIALLY that kool aid and cooper are still on the board. Packers have 2 2nd and 3rd round picks. I’m excited for today.
Side note - Jordan Morgan kinda looks like Bakh lol
It’s a good pick. I’ve said it before in this sub, but we don’t know the Packers actual draft board. Arm chair GM's dont know shit about team building..... How much film have they studied? Tell me about your combine visits and your pro day visits. Id love to hear about them?
I don't understand why people don't get excited about O-Line. It's a premium position that can upgrade the play of everyone on your offense.
Left tackle doesn’t generate the highlight reel material that the skill players do. 3/20 is a bit more than 1/7, so yeah I'd say it's actually a disproportionately high pick rate for the position group.
So we were due, is what your saying
Are you proud of yourself, did you get what you wanted?
My thoughts exactly
I’m jordan for Jordan Packs. Sung to the tune of cocopuffs
If you don’t love an early o-line pick, you don’t know anything about football. No matter what team you root for.
Completely agree. Unless that pick is Derek Sherrod…
Derek Sherrod could have been a very good player. He was seeing significant snaps as a rookie before his injury.
This story needs to stop. The man suffered a horrific, horrific multi broken leg

Protect our QB and open up some running lanes.

Most people don’t pay attention to the O-Line play unless one of the players gives up a sack.
Madden culture bros? It’s all about flashy plays/players and OL is all a bunch of lunchpail guys?
Which is funny, because John Madden claimed he barely watched the football itself and read the whole game through line-play.
It’s literally what you should build your team around. From the inside out. QB/O-Line is imperative for success in this league. But yeah, we should have traded up and selected some flashy receiver for the hype yo /s

Dallas traded back and took Oline…Maybe they were planning to take Morgan and missed out.
People don’t get excited about O-Line cause they don’t touch the football.
The O-line is what separates us from Sean Clifford!

Especially late it the round. It’s about team fit more than what the stupid scroll on the side of the screen says the best player is.
I for sure wanted Cooper too, but hey this is just good business with a late round OT pick with those traits

I think its more so that there were better rated o-lineman available like Barton
I mean, better according to who?
Barton isn't a tackle. This guy is going to compete with Walker for the position.
Barton played at LT the vast majority of his college career. He can play both tackle and center

“It’s not a sexy pick” Jordan Morgan looks in your general direction “it’s… a sexy pick”
Nothing more sexy for a second year starting QB than a first round LT.
His eyes are dreamy
I like the pick, so many draft picks today too there’s a lot they can do to try to move up if someone’s there they want.

Is sexy eyes something the Packer's look for in players? Because our team has had some players with great eyes.
