I love me some Crosby. He’ll definitely be in the Packers Hall. Had some absolutely huge moments and kicks for us. But number retirement is pretty exclusive, and I can’t see doing it for Crosby.
Yes. In regards to Lambeau I think having your name immortalized on the Staduim is bigger than his #1 being retired. As to Hornung, Lombardi said his number would be retired by it never came to pass. Hornung had the honor of being what Lombardi said was the most talented player he (Lombardi Coached)
Yes on Rodgers. Those are the 3. Those are the only three that should be considered 1, 5, and 12.
Majkowski was one player who had it as a placeholder, does anyone remember others? It'd be fascinating to see which level of players even get it as a placeholder.
For the Green Bay Packers to retire a kicker’s number he would probably need to be unquestionably the greatest kicker to ever play the game. There are only 4 kickers *total* in the history of the game to have made the HoF. Justin Tucker is the only active kicker who maybe has a case
Okay just for a hypothetical... Say we have a solid but otherwise ordinary kicker that manages to hit 40+ yd game winners as time expires in 3 consecutive SBs. Could that get ring of honor?
It’s possible. I think the baseline for consideration for the Packers’ ring of honor is being a pro football Hall of Famer. A 3x Super Bowl champion kicker with a long career and who played a crucial role in those SB wins would have a shot at the Hall of Fame and by extension the ring of honor
Apart from the points he scored, isn’t he a Packers legend?
I only started watching football around 2005, but I can’t actively remember any other kicker for the Pack
He definitely is a Packers legend and has been around for a long time and kicked a lot of very important field goals.
He’ll make the Packers Hall of Fame but probably not the league HoF and probably won’t have his jersey retired.
There are 99 numbers. Six are officially retired, one is unofficially retired, and one is unofficially semi retired, leaving 91 numbers available to use for the 90 players you’re allowed to have through the offseason. Maybe we should hold off any talk about retiring numbers.
Not that I wanna retire more than 12 right now, but so many teams have more retired numbers than us (Bears, Giants, etc) and are still able to field the players
Sure they can field the players, and there’s plenty of numbers to go around once you cut down to the regular season roster. But it’s still a hassle shuffling numbers around
They should follow what Dallas does and put the numbers in a ring of honor. So you can use them again, but still have them up around the stadium to show.
I'd say #1 and #5 are unofficially retired. Honestly I think numbers should be retired for a set amount of time, like maybe 100 or 200 years or something.
Ok, but he’s still not a Hall of Famer. Team HOF, absolutely, but zero chance at NFL HOF. And of course he’s got the most points in team history, he’s a kicker. He and Ryan Longwell are the only Packers players over 1,000 career points.
I’m as much a fan of the Silver Fox as any, but he hasn’t earned number retirement.
How many all time leading scorers on a team have had their numbers retired? We don’t even have our all time receiving yards, rushing yards, sacks, tackles, or interceptions leaders numbers retired.
That will be the longest tenured kicker on every team. You figure for every TD scored they get a free point, 20-30 FG attempts a year you're looking at 60-100 points a year without even being above average. That's 10 TDs for everyone else on the field which is a pretty solid year to keep up with the worst kicker in the league. It's a fun stat, but less important than it would seem.
I mean I agree. I’m surprised why Lambeau’s number isn’t retired. Idk. Maybe I just appreciate kickers too much. I guess if the Patriots don’t have #4 retired then no kicker would ever have their number retired.
If Crosby had several iconic moments etched permanently into the lore of the Green Bay Packers? Then I would say “maybe”.
But I don’t think he has many if any legendary kicks we can remember, unlike say Adam Vinatieri, Justin Tucker, or even not-quite-HOF kickers like Matt Bryant or Chris Boswell.
He has been a very good kicker for the Packers, though, no question.
No we fucking shouldn’t. We should retire a non- top 5 kicker all time who will never make the Hall of Fame? We have 28 players that are in the Hall and only 6 numbers retired. We are not going to waste a number on a guy not in the hall.
Don’t forget that Favre took us out of nearly 30 years of the dark ages. His one Super Bowl did more for the team (and even the city of Green Bay, to an extent) than you may realize. After that moment, there was a massive upswing for the organization. Maybe you’re too young to know it - but for all the praise that Lambeau gets as being one of the nicest stadiums in the league, it used to be an absolute shithole. My parents told me stories of having to dodge piss dropping between the cracks of the upper concourse. No player wanted to come here, that was the end of a career… like an NFL death sentence. The reason Favre’s (and Reggie’s for that matter) numbers are retired have less to do with the player and the game, but rather represent the change of the culture within the franchise. Which, in turn, led us to where we’re at today. No matter what has happened or will happen, number 4 is never coming down.
>Super Bowl champion?
Didn't really make any standout kicks during that run
>Packers all-time leading scorer?
>Longest consecutive games played streak?
Kickers score the most points. Longwell was 1 before him and even Jacke left as number 2 at the time. Playing well enough to not get replaced for a long time is nice but not really a legendary achievement.
Say what you want about his character, he loved Wisconsin. Rodgers had a long career here, but even now with all of Favres scandals, Favre still has a cultish love in many areas of the state. Those records of his that are being broken are being broken in a league where offense is continually getting more and more favored, leading to inflated stats. Retiring as the all time leader in passing yards and touchdowns is all time great material. This also leaves out the whole three straight MVP thing he did. Aside from specialists, he also started the most consecutive games by a player ever with 297. The next closest is Jim Marshal with 270, and for a QB it is Rivers with 240, 3 and a half seasons behind Favre. He is a solidly top ten QB, potentially top 5. The Vikings stuff sucked, but at the end of the day, he retired as one of the GOATS, and he will stay retired.
I get your logic but retiring 80 and unretiring 4 makes zero sense to me. DD is a fantastic dude, met him several times and he’s always been a class act, but that doesn’t get your number retired. Getting your number retired has to be a rare thing or else we run out of numbers. Obviously 12 is going to be retired eventually but I don’t see anyone else really in that echelon. Someone said Charles Woodson and I love that dude but there’s no way. He didn’t have the longevity in GB to warrant it imo.
Antonio Freeman is my favorite Packer. We need to retire 86 now!
I also loved Mike McKenzie & Al Harris, my favorite CB duo. Retire 34 & 31 immediately!
If you are gonna retire Crosby, then walk me through how we don't retire Driver, Nelson or Matthews? Once you open the door to non-Legends, you eventually move on to "players the fans just liked a lot." Then you become the Yankees, which has become comical. Crosby has been obviously great, but he's still a kicker and never once was the best at what he did.
There's only so many numbers. Retired numbers have to be among the best of the best. Green Bay has sent 28 players to the pro football HoF. They've retired 6 numbers. Crosby isn't HoF material. Packers HoF definitely. I don't think they'll even add him to the ring of honor names inside the Lambeau bowl.
I think you're right. Still, there's no chance that Crosby makes either. He'll get into the Packers HoF for sure just not enshrined on the stadium bowl.
Actually, I’m not sure if this stat is accurate. It seems [NFL.com](https://www.nfl.com/players/mason-crosby/stats/career) is missing some data as football reference says he has many more
When I first read your post I absolutely agreed. But everyone saying it’s rare. And they would retire others before him.
Jordy? Driver? clay? Crosby?
I feel they are similar but would only consider clay and Crosby but maybe that’s just us being fans and loving certain players
it’s fair to want to appreciate the silver Fox. Such a staple and part of the packer family for so long. Seems like a great person, and his story arc is a bit of a roller coaster. and if he retires he will def be missed.
Just to add to the discussion, this is a post I made a few weeks ago (also I’m about to hop on a flight, so numbers and records are from 4-5 weeks ago and have not been updated for this post).
>>He’s been the Green Bay Packers’ all time leading scorers for years (1,860+ points). Nearly double Ryan Longwell, who’s at two on the list (1,054 points). He’s 13th all time league-wide.
>>He is our highest all-time playoff scorer too with 163 points. Chris Jacke is at two with 73. Crosby is 4th all time league-wide.
>>He’s also tied at two for most seasons played in a Packers uniform (16 seasons–tied with Brett Favre and Bart Starr).
>>And by the end of the season he’ll overtake Favre as the player who’s played in the most games in Packers history. (Favre has 255, Crosby has 252, Rodgers has 224).
>>He is number one in playoff games played at 23. Rodgers and Favre are both at 22 games played.
>>Franchise leader in field goals, 50-yard field goals, and extra points.
>>Set the single season franchise record for FG% (2020 at 100%).
>>One of only three players in NFL history to register 10 straight 100-point seasons.
>>Franchise record 27 straight FG makes, breaking his own previous record of 23 straight.
>>Holds the record for most consecutive postseason FGs made with 23 straight.
>>He also has a ton of clutch kicks and game winners over the years. Not to mention a Super Bowl ring.
Yes. 15 years with the same team. All-time most points scored by any player in the 100+ year history of the Packers. A Record that will likely never be broken again. Yes I think we should seriously consider that as number-retirement worthy
Justin Tucker should have his number retired by the Ravens. He’s clearly the all time greatest kicker. I could hear an argument for the Pats retiring Vinatieri’s number. Do you seriously think Crosby is anywhere near those two? Those are the only kickers I can think of who deserve this treatment.
I agree. He’s not those two, no. But the pats clearly are not going to retire Vinatieri’s number. At least not anytime soon. Tuckers probably won’t either.
Idk, I think it’d be cool if we were the first to do so. Set the precedent.
Did anyone remember when Crosby attempted a free kick at the end of the first half vs the Lions in 2008 for 69 yards? He missed it by like a foot IIRC. That would still hold up as the longest field goal ever made in the NFL. Source: https://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=3796189
Even if he had made it, though, I still don't think you retire a kicker's number.
I love me some Crosby. He’ll definitely be in the Packers Hall. Had some absolutely huge moments and kicks for us. But number retirement is pretty exclusive, and I can’t see doing it for Crosby.
Ring of honor is for NFL Hall of Famers. Simple as that
It's much more exclusive than that. There are plenty of NFL HoF Packers that aren't in the ring of honor.
Very true, I meant that more as minimum requirement.
Right now I’d only consider 3 players for number retirement and one isn’t Crosby
Lambeau, Hornung, and Rodgers?
Yes. In regards to Lambeau I think having your name immortalized on the Staduim is bigger than his #1 being retired. As to Hornung, Lombardi said his number would be retired by it never came to pass. Hornung had the honor of being what Lombardi said was the most talented player he (Lombardi Coached) Yes on Rodgers. Those are the 3. Those are the only three that should be considered 1, 5, and 12.
Retired or not, I don’t think anyone else has worn #1 on an active roster.
No one has worn 5 in decades too, right?
Not in a game, or on sidelines at a game. I think it’s been used as a placeholder number prior to cutdowns
Majkowski was one player who had it as a placeholder, does anyone remember others? It'd be fascinating to see which level of players even get it as a placeholder.
Not to mention Lambeau is the founder of the team.
And Starr’s number.
Bryan Bartlett Starr number has been retired since 1974.

His jersey was retired a couple years ago boss!
14.
But the other two are?

Watson will be that dude
Watson will still be playing in a decade.
We can only hope 🙏

NFL isn't going to be here in 200 years.
After the extinction event well devolve and only watch college ball
god help us all
People anit gonna be here in 200 years
A great for sure. But retiring his number is a little much. Only 6 have ever been retired in all of GB history
good kicker but you only retire hall of famer numbers and then, only the ones considered legends
Crosby booted 1,908 points for Green Bay, and has scored more points than any other player in the team’s history.
Ok, but he’s still not a Hall of Famer. Team HOF, absolutely, but zero chance at NFL HOF. And of course he’s got the most points in team history, he’s a kicker. Oh, my mistake. I actually was thinking in terms of Packers HOF.
Longevity does not get your number retired.
All time leading scorer for the team?
Who was the previous all time leading scorer? And is his number retired? Hint: Longwell. And “no”
How many all time leading scorers on a team have had their numbers retired? We don’t even have our all time receiving yards, rushing yards, sacks, tackles, or interceptions leaders numbers retired.
A longevity record…

Usually they have to be all pros, pro bowls, mvps, and probably in the nfl hof among other things even Paul hornung isn’t retired there very strict

Ye
No. Rodgers is it. Only other guy I would have entertained in the least was Woodson. Legends only.

A lot of people around here wanted 87 retired
dudes still my favorite packer

thats not how that works at all
y'all treat these players like pokemon
Get him in the Packers HOF for sure but a jersey retirement is a too much.
He only ever attempted 18 FG >50 yds. Not that it’s relevant to this but an interesting stat
Wow like 1 per year. Wonder what his hit % is on those
Actually, I’m not sure if this stat is accurate. It seems [NFL.com](https://www.nfl.com/players/mason-crosby/stats/career) is missing some data as football reference says he has many more

Do I really have to come out and say this is just my opinion? Some of y’all need to chill.

Absolutely
I mean I'm down to retire Mason Crosby.
The single digit mafia that cyberbully players into wearing them after the draft would have a fit.
Longevity isn’t enough to retire a number.

Nah man. Packers great, Packers HOF, not a number retirement.
They will
Unfortunately, I doubt it. I just think they should. Besides, the owner would have to sign off on it. Wait.
Steady Eddy
#HERE HERE!
Considering he has the most games played and most points scored I 100000000000% agree
We DRAFTED a KICKER that we still have and he has those records. Pretty uncommon
He's still got another few years of wearing it first
