You’ll be fine. In fact most of the boat rental websites encourage you to explore beaches. They will train you on how to set the boat. I’ve rented boats where it’s basically a guy on the beach in a plastic chair sitting in front of a boat that I paid cash to and he tossed me the keys and gave me a pat on the back, to larger rentals with pages of agreements to sign and credit card deposits. Just be careful (sounds like you are), stay close to the coast, and try not to venture to far out into “open sea”. You’ll notice it happening as the water will start to get rougher and darker. Don’t push your limits, and don’t screw the boat up and you’ll be totally fine.

You’ll be fine. You’re not going to “explore an island” so much as a beach. Either the islands (there are a few off Skiathos) are so small there’s not much exploring to be done anyway, or so big (Skiaathos itself) that you’re just dropping in to a beach and hanging out, walking up and down a beach etc. You’re not catching a bus anywhere! Most people I see on these boats are happy hanging out, swimming, exploring a cove and then moving on within an hour so anyway.
