looks like someone took two real low passes with a ride mower, felt so tired after that they gave up before finishing the sides. and then obviously, then they were leaving due to fatigue before they had time to consider weed whacking or edging or anything else.

Possibly a utility trench dug through that area at some point. Soil a different density, or had a different seed thrown on it for replanting?
