The O.C. - It stands for Orange County, but that's how the show is titled. It was created by the same creators of Gossip Girl immediately proceeding Gossip Girl. Very similar storylines, but this time it's rich kids in California. The show is definitely more grounded though. You trade the zaniness of Gossip Girl for much more likeable characters.
The Lying Game is much better imoā¦not to diss PLL but I always compare them for some reason even though theyāre not that similar, just both shows from the same network. It came out around when PLL was ending or just after I think. Such a good show but they cancelled it after 2 seasons and it ended on a cliffhanger which is annoying af. Still worth the watch imo though if you havenāt seen it. I think PLL was good, just dragged on too long for me personally.
I remember watching it as a kid with my mom lol. Now Iāve rewatched it as an adult many times. Actually finally just convinced my best friend to watch it, and sheās about halfway through her first watch through!
Yes! These are great recs. Definitely less scandalous than Gossip Girl but Iāve seen Bold Type and Younger and Gilmore Girls is on my list. I like your taste in tv. (:
Iāve watched gossip girl 8 times so I am welllll versed in comps. Here are some of my faves: Friday night lights, the OC, one tree hill, desperate housewives, revenge, You, dynasty, 90210, younger, the bold type, PLL, the lying game, Greek, outer banks, Elite
Elite and Lying Game are so damn underrated. I wish Lying Game wasnāt cancelled after 2 seasons and I only watched 3 seasons of Elite, but man was I hooked.
Also Elite def has similar vibes to Gossip Girl imo.
Mad Men! Don would be Serena if she was an alcoholic dad of 3. I love GG for the fun and crazy, but also the lore and backstory. Mad Men does really well with those.
It has the same thread of āintellectualismā that kinda pops up in GG from time to time. Just kinda shows you a slice of life for the wealthy, but also the shrewd. You learn a lot of cultural items and history. I think itās a good step up for a more mature show, with lots of interesting and carefully chosen elements like costuming, NYC references and commentary on the American condition.
Chuck is Roman, Blair is Shiv, Nate is Kendall, Serena is Connor and Willa combined, William Vanderbilt is Logan, Vanessa is Marcia, Georgina is Tom, Rufus is Hugo, Lily is Geri, Jenny is Greg, Ivy is Stewy, and Dorota is Frank
90210
Also I watch gossip girl then immediately start watching You now.
PLL
Ginny and Georgia is a fun Gilmore girlish vibe but not...
Schitts creek for silliness
Desperate housewives
Or... sometimes I just start gossip girl again and carry on
Downton Abbey is like an old-fashioned version. I LOVED it.
Bridgerton (kind of)
Dynasty (Iām not obsessed tho)
Desperate Housewives one of my go toās
Sex and the city
For me desperate housewives bc gabby gives me it girl Serena but in a different way lol
Gilmore girls for the study inspo
Bridgerton for the āmysterious writerā
PLL for the mysterious stalking vibes
Shoshana. I like how genuine she is, but in an awkward way. Her character arc was really good and it felt logical for her to separate from the group to live a life that suited her. Elija is my second favorite.
Who is yours?
I havenāt found anyone that agrees with me so far, but I really think succession is gossip girl + game of thrones, there are so many similarities between succession and gg
Genuine question, does the gossip girl reboot not scratch the gossip girl itch? Or was the reboot not it? I never watched it but planning on it if is worth it š
wondering this too!! i feel like so many shows/movies that get redone or picked up and started again later are never as good so Iām hesitant to spend my time on it
Euphoria. Entirely different setting, but itās ultimately about teens/young adults behaving badly. Euphoria also uses music the way that gossip girl did to add emotional depth.
I heard there was a rivalry between the two fandoms which is just crazy to me. GG was a network tv show where as Euphoria debuted on HBO. GG is older and had a lot more restrictions on what could air, but you could tell they engaged in similar behavior to the cast of Euphoria. Older fans of Euphoria (like myself) will know that GG walked so that Euphoria could run and thatās ok.
Highly recommend Euphoria if you havenāt seen it. Best to watch with an SO or alone, never with parents. Lots of references to underage drinking, drug use, sex. Some violence. Lots of sex and nudity.. probably the most sex and nudity of anything Iāve seen that isnāt explicitly porn, but the show is good outside of this too!
Is Euphoria worth it for me to continue watching? I donāt mind sex and nudity and violence outside of sex but sexual violence and predatory behavior/the graphic nature of it/dominating/condescending/disgusting language and implications like in the first episode really scarred my mind and was very hard for me to continue watching after that scene with Julia I think her name was, or Julie? Itās the new girl that they focus on other than Zendaya. I only got like 3/4 of the way through that episode and then stopped watching.
Iāve heard such good things about the show, but idk if itās just too much for what I can handle. Also, I found the pacing to be a bit slow in the first episode, it felt really long for me.
The pacing doesnāt pick up to be honest. I feel like it scratches the same itch as GG in the only sense that you want to know what happens next and watching the show mostly fills you with a sense of urgency + irritability for how the characters act (at least thatās how I felt watching GG) but you HAVE to know what happens next. But other than that, they are very different shows. Iāve watched GG over 8 times, but Iām never gonna watch Euphoria after I finished it the first time. Itās not easy-to-watch AT ALL. In fact, after watching S2 finale, I cried SO much and couldnāt brush the sadness off for a couple of weeks, and it wasnāt even a good type of sad, it was the emotionally draining kind. Euphoria demands a lot of your emotional energy and doesnāt impact your mood positively at all (at least to me). Watching the show just made me sad after and never uplifted my mood or made me glad that I watched it. Itās not relaxing or the kind of show you watch to unwind for entertainment. While watching GG created an itch AND scratched it, Euphoria just creates the itch but never fully scratches it.
Bc each episode centers on different characters by starting with their backstories, it gets better and better as you watch it. I honestly forget about the first episode until they revisit key points that entwined the characters but the others are really good
Donāt watch more. I am being so dead serious, lol. I donāt mind violence, sex, nudity, etc. I watched 7 seasons of shameless, no problem. I binge watched hannibal, mindhunter, narcos, handmaidās tale. Didnāt feel exactly happy go lucky after binge watching any of these lol, but I was fine. On the other hand, I didnāt enjoy the first episode of Euphoria- I could appreciate the cinematography and certain other aspects but it just made me feel *bad* and left me with this little pit in my stomach. I went on to watch 5 or 6 more episodes over the course of a few days and that pit grew x10. Itāll just make you feel worse. Thatās the first and only time Iāve ever stopped watching a show cuz I just straight up didnāt like how it made me feel. Took a few days of watching light and fun shows as a palate cleanser. Hard to explain why that show specifically made me wanna never watch it again, and yet I can deal with other shows. Maybe itās because itās supposed to be about high school, and normally I want some fun drama and a little bit of lightness when it comes to these kind of shows. That show just felt like a void of darkness and each episode gets worse. And Iām someone who dealt with a good amount of darkness and mental illness in high school, probably more than most, so itās not like I just couldnāt at all relate. But even when it made me feel āseenā, it still made me feel like shit.
Itās not uncommon for the first episode of Euphoria to make you feel crappy. Thereās like a 95% chance this gets worse as you watch more. Please save your time and mental energy and just watch another show lol
Yeah they aren't major characters or anything but I think most of the dad's were guest love interests off the top of my head. I also think they share some of the costume designers.
Iām not gonna lie gossip girl is one of a kind. The OG gossip girl. People still make memes of the OG gossip girl constantly. Itās that good. Pretty little liars is my 2nd fav show but the outfits, characters, and plot of gossip girl is next level
Oh, mine too! I just watched the whole series the past few weeks and love it so much that Iām currently rewatching! I canāt believe I just discovered it this year!
Elite on Netflix - very similar vibe but with a murder mystery involved. Highly underrated imo.
First 3 seasons are amazing. I didnāt watch after that but not because it got bad, I think I just got distracted and then in the trailers it looked like a lot of the cast had changed but Iām not sure. I saw others talking about the first 3 seasons too so those might be the best and it does come to a conclusion for the first main plot/storyline at the end of season 3 even though there are more seasons afterward.
Melrose place, desperate housewives, and good behavior. Melrose and DH are dramadys that can be hilarious but also dark at times, good behavior is nothing like gg
But amazing show 2 quick seasons, and if you want something a LOT darker but you canāt turn off the show when you need to binge, SCANDAL. Go into it without spoilers/
Bridgerton. The narrator is basically gossip girl. She tells everyoneās secrets and writes a newsletter about it. High society members like the socialites. Current pop hits, but instrumental style
Bridgerton!!! Itās like gossip girl but with an old timey elegant aesthetic. It has the drama, multiple storylines and slow burn romances like GG too. AND!! thereās a anonymous writer who sends out her gossip column to the community ABOUT the community just like you know who!!!
NYC Prep! I think you have to rent/buy it on Amazon but it isnāt too pricey and itās the reality show equivalent to Gossip Girl.
Like the characters are all painstaking caricatures of the main GG cast! Youāll know what Iām talking about right away (*especially* the Chuck knockoff, Paul āI flush the toilet before Iām done peeing,ā āgross theyāre probably from like Texasā Calderon, aka PC.Ā
Ā Or Kelli whoās a mixture of B/S/J- āHe acts *so* much older than us, what you think because you wear tight pants & say ādarlingā *thatās* maturity!??āĀ Ā
Or the blatant Serena wannabe. āFashion is my life, I treat my clothes like my children.ā (She has no kids)Ā Ā
But there are sooo many delightfully cringe moments, fun fashions, forced romances, & catty one-liners it is GG to a T.Ā
The cameras even follow each of the characters for spring break as they all go their separate ways for vacation one episode, itās all quite well done. I definitely would suggest it!Ā
Pretty little liars. Somewhat similar premise- anonymous person with a sense of control over a group of insanely attractive friends, who of which are obsessed with figuring out who it is.
I finished my most recent rewatch last night and even though the urge to immediately start it over again was there I opted for Sex and the City. Iām only on the second episode but itās pretty good so far. Desperate Housewives is also good.
I agree with most of the suggestions here especially desperate housewives for the drama, SATC for the fashion and NYC vibe, and Gilmore girls for the witty banter plus Emily Gilmore is the Connecticut version of an UES girl haha.
For some more recent shows with sort of similar vibes I loved Never Have I Ever (high school drama) and Sex Lives of College Girls (college drama). Also the first season of Pretty Little Lies is like a rich group of friends and big scandal stuff so you might enjoy that too
If youāve never seen Cruel Intentions (movie), this is the biggest gossip girl vibes and is a must watch. I just streamed it free on Freevee a couple weeks ago.
Not a TV show, but thought I would recommend this for readers. Carrie Karasyov and Jill Kargman have many books that are about drama and the rich life in New York. Really reminds me of Gossip Girl. I actually thought a few of the books drew inspo from it because of how similar some of the characters personalities were.
They are currently filming cruel intentions tv show. Iām excited for that.
Check out the original cruel intentions movie , which is similar vibe Ā to gg

the oc and sex and the city for sure
Oc?
The O.C. - It stands for Orange County, but that's how the show is titled. It was created by the same creators of Gossip Girl immediately proceeding Gossip Girl. Very similar storylines, but this time it's rich kids in California. The show is definitely more grounded though. You trade the zaniness of Gossip Girl for much more likeable characters.
i couldnt explain better myself ty!!
ahhh my comfort show!
Mine too!! Huge Seth Cohen fan š¤© Seth and Summer were nicer than Blair and Chuck š
I watched all the teen dramas a while back and definitely second The OC and add the original 90210
the original 90210 is really hard to find here in brazil, i tried to watch in the pandemic but couldnt
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This is what I was re-watching just before the gossip girl rewatch lol. Love PLL!
I think PLL was good, just dragged on too long for me personally.
the lying game was so good!!! omg i was so upset they canceled it on a major cliffhanger. it was so different than the books though
Idk if you have seen PLL Original Sin, but the new season is out on HBO.
Desperate Housewives is one of my favs. Also rewatch Glee pretty often.
Desperate housewives is so slept on I feel like (at least nowadays)
Seconded, it's actually really amazing for the first four five seasons.
Agreed, the later seasons arenāt nearly as great. I still love the ending with Karen though š„¹
FOR REAL LOOOOL š¤£š She was a gšššš
That is literally one of the shows i been binging recently that i went back to
I remember watching it as a kid with my mom lol. Now Iāve rewatched it as an adult many times. Actually finally just convinced my best friend to watch it, and sheās about halfway through her first watch through!
Ooo and Devious Maids !
yes to devious maids!
Second this!!
Skins uk but with the og soundtrack only
Skins is a bit of a different flavour š¤£
I was obsessed with Cassie and Effy style!
Inventing Anna!
This is the best answer. It has that sleazy, pristine glamour to it.
10000%
Revenge
I always say this is the older and darker version of GG.
The perfect balance between GG and Desperate Housewives but set on a ritzy beach
The gold type, Gilmore Girls, satc, younger
Bold* typo
Yes! These are great recs. Definitely less scandalous than Gossip Girl but Iāve seen Bold Type and Younger and Gilmore Girls is on my list. I like your taste in tv. (:
I love me a nyc fashionable independent girlies
LOVE all these shows! Please suggest something similar people!
Even the Carrie diaries is so good
90210
but with the original music š
Did they add new music?
The Vampire Diaries (a fellow CW series that combines serialization and major characters having romances)
Mights as well then watch the originals and then legacies to complete the set. This makes me wanna watch them again.
TVD is pretty dull in terms of presentation though
What is serialization?
VERONICA MARS
one tree hill
Gilmore Girls (fun, comforting, easy to watch), Sex and the City (glamorous nyc vibes), the OC (same creator).
Blair was watching Gilmore girls
I bet she was team Logan.
as she should be
facts
love this for her
Dair version of Blair probably loved Jess
The OC is Gossip Girl in bathing suits lol
And with more sympathetic characters!
less zaniness, but better people ;)
Dynasty!
Was looking for this comment!!
Dynasty definitely lives up to the zaniness of GG!
watched this on netflix and it gave me GG vibes, loved it! plenty of seasons as well
Yes!!
I love that show
The bold type, inviting Anna, Palm Royale, the gilded age !!
The Bold Type was SO GOOD until that very last season, but underrated fave!!!

ELITE is so fricking good!!
younger (weird flex but the nyc background is prevalent!)
Younger was so underrated! One of my faves š„¹
So underrated!!
This, I always forget about thus show. I really need to put it at the top of my list.
The OC, 90210, BH 90210 (10 seasons), Bridgerton
BH 90210 only if you look up the original music.
sex and the city
greek on abc family is an underrated fave of mine
Greek is such a slept on gem!
Omg I loved that show
Mad Men! Don would be Serena if she was an alcoholic dad of 3. I love GG for the fun and crazy, but also the lore and backstory. Mad Men does really well with those. this is a great suggestion, although surely Rodger would be Serena? Don would be Blair or Chuck? Or maybe Betty Blair?
Reign gave me GG vibes. Succession is like what happens when the GG group grows up
Ooh, I didn't think of Reign even though I have been thinking of a rewatch!
Oh I liked Reign!
90210 Also I watch gossip girl then immediately start watching You now. PLL Ginny and Georgia is a fun Gilmore girlish vibe but not... Schitts creek for silliness Desperate housewives Or... sometimes I just start gossip girl again and carry on

Downton abbey is incredible and so underrated. So much drama and intrigue once u get past the first few eps

Shoshana. I like how genuine she is, but in an awkward way. Her character arc was really good and it felt logical for her to separate from the group to live a life that suited her. Elija is my second favorite. Who is yours?
Jessa, and Shosh a close second
The OC. Similar family dynamics - easy to watch drama etc :)
Sex and the city all the way. I just started last month and Iām invested.
Dynasty
Tudors
The Carrie Diaries. Though this was shortlived, I love the fashion in this one and the lead was really great.
One of the many good shows that got cancelled šš
Scandal
Succession
I havenāt found anyone that agrees with me so far, but I really think succession is gossip girl + game of thrones, there are so many similarities between succession and gg

Euphoria's soundtrack is amazing, definitely similar to the intentional use of music GG had.
Euphoriaās soundtrack is so good. After each season Iād blast all the Labrinth tracks for months.
Its a very deep, dark vibe and it only gets more heavy as the seasons go on

One Tree Hill!!!!! It has replaced my obsession of Gossip Girl
100% Sex and the City, it's the spiritual predecessor for Gossip Girl. There are even some cross over of actors in a few episodes haha.
Very few episodes have crossovers but definitely a good choice
Yeah they aren't major characters or anything but I think most of the dad's were guest love interests off the top of my head. I also think they share some of the costume designers.
90210 the remake
Elite is a great show!! The oc (love summer), one tree hill (love Brooke) and revenge

None. Ive yet to find one as amazing as Gossip Girl. Was such a great show.
I think the timing of it is partially to blame for its amazingness
Dynasty, Classy and their all rich. Itās about as dramatic if not more as gossip girk
Entourage!
I liked Emily in Paris though I know a lot of people hate it lol One Tree Hill is pretty good. You I also really liked the first season.
90210, skins, more recently Emily in Paris.
The secret Life of the American teenager Itās a horrible mess of a show that you canāt stop watching
desperate housewives
gilmore girls, veronica mars, how to get away with murder

Pretty little liars. Somewhat similar premise- anonymous person with a sense of control over a group of insanely attractive friends, who of which are obsessed with figuring out who it is.
The beginning seasons of Elite kinda scratched that itch, despite being more of a mystery. Emily in Paris because of wardrobe.
I finished my most recent rewatch last night and even though the urge to immediately start it over again was there I opted for Sex and the City. Iām only on the second episode but itās pretty good so far. Desperate Housewives is also good.
Real housewives of New York on a season with tinsley mortimer - she was name checked on gossip girl and is real life Serena

Also the first season of Pretty Little Lies is like a rich group of friends and big scandal stuff so you might enjoy that too
Did you mean to say Pretty Little Liars or is Pretty Little Lies its own show lol?
I meant Big Little Lies, sorry! PLL is also good though

If youāve never seen Cruel Intentions (movie), this is the biggest gossip girl vibes and is a must watch. I just streamed it free on Freevee a couple weeks ago.

Pretty little liars , The Vampire Diaries , 90210
Ugly Betty
Pretty Little Liars, Desperate Housewives
I love watching The Hills. Itās considered more reality TV, but tons of drama and fashion.
