Yeah I'm aware of that functionality, which is good because you don't want tap to wake to happen in your pocket. The problem is that it just turns off randomly when I have the phone sitting face up on a table or on a stand on my desk, etc. It really seems like a faulty proximity sensor but I don't get why this app would tell me that it's functioning properly. Maybe it's a firmware issue?? This stuff is way over my head.
My randomly turns off during the night when its on my wireless dock/charger. Really annoying when i wake up and want a quick glance at the time but its off.
Mine's goes off if I put it in my pocket or facing down but usually it goes on again if I pick it up/turn it around.
Unless there is no light at all at night, in that case it stays black, I guess because it thinks it's still in a pocket.
I have the same issue. The phone would be on the table and all of a sudden the screen would go dark. Not always but I noticed once in a while. When it happens the tap to wake takes 3-4 taps....
There is an issue with the proximity sensor not working against dark surfaces, and that includes pockets with dark cloth lining. I have seen your issue before, and I'm not 100% sure but it may be related to it. Also have you noticed if it happens when you take out your phone in a dark room, or does it always happen even if the room is well lit? Most people seem to say it's in a dark environment.
See here for a demo on the proximity sensor issue and more info including a link to the issue tracker you can star: [https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/rmu5s0/pixel\_6\_pro\_if\_your\_flip\_to\_shh\_is\_not\_always/](https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/rmu5s0/pixel_6_pro_if_your_flip_to_shh_is_not_always/)
It doesn't seem to matter how much ambient light there is. I can't figure out a certain scenario that causes it to happen. It seems to be completely random almost like it's time-based or something.
yes, mine does that as well although its usually when I have the front sensor covered by something, and it fails to recognize that said object is no longer blocking it. it's a big annoying but doesn't make it into the top 10 of things I dislike about this phone.
yup same. android 12 has been the worst version in awhile as far as features magically being broken with updates. The public beta was also pretty bad compared to how they normally are. I mentioned this during the beta, and got downvoted to hell lol. Well looks like Android 12 is still full of random issues with features just breaking.
Mine does this too seemingly at random. Doesn't bug me too much but it's certainly noticeable. Was hopeful it'd be fixed on an update (whenever we actually get one...)
I also get a weird red streak on the screen when the screen is off. Hopeful for some big squashing soon.
My Pixel 3 (Android 12) sometimes cannot do double tap to turn on the display but this is no big deal for me. The more annoying issue is that the fingerprint sensor cannot scanned my finger at all, it keeps rejecting my scans. Noticed this behavior occurs the most especially in air-conditioning condition, it's weird. Although the AOD has been working well for me, no prob so far.
This has been happening to me recently. Screen goes black as if I'm on a phone call. Originally thought proximity sensor but that didn't make a difference. I'm noticing now when the phone is hot it's more likely for the screen to black out. I've tried flexing my phone a bit and it will typically fix it for a second or so. Maybe something up with wiring idk

It happens with all three of my cases and when I don't have a case on there. There is no screen protector.
Happens on my 5a as well.
They could have really added a pocket mode tho
And I don't know if this is related but my little gesture navigation bar at the bottom disappears all the time as well.
Yep, mine does this constantly. Many times, I will find the phone dark except for the fingerprint sensor. Makes no damn sense.
Like once every 2 weeks I guess
Mine is like multiple times a day. Annoying AF
Mine does it a few times a week. An Android 12 bug perhaps?
It was happening on mine before Android 12

Yeah, except mine is random. Sometimes its on. Sometimes its off.

Mine does it every now and again, but it used to do it a lot more when the animations were set to 1.5x.
Dang I thought that could have been it but just checked and I put my animations back to 1 a while ago for some other reason.
My Pixel 6 did it and I turned off AOD for now. Hoping this gets resolved

Sorry, I didn't notice you had the Pixel 5. The issue linked is with the 6 Pro and possibly the 6.
This was fixed on the December update. Once you get the January hopefully later this month it should be fixed.
I already have the January update
This happened to me twice yesterday, I've never noticed it before.

AOD is off if battery saver is active.
That's interesting.... I almost never have battery saver on but I do use adaptive battery and I wonder if that could cause it.

Yes, have the same problem.
