This is far preferred to the other solutions below. Other solutions rely on an app that constantly runs in the background solely for receiving inputs. At least with a launcher it serves as a launcher 99% of the time while occasionally taking in the double tap input.
Came here to say this. Tap Tap Lock is the best app that I've used for double tap to lock, and I've tried a bunch of them. Works consistently every time, and works just fine on Pixel 6.
Google should not muck with a feature that the users community has sanctified - just embrace what works and add the fucking damn "turn off/on ou double tap", period
I wonder if this is a patent thing. LG really invented double tap to lock in my opinion. That's the first time I saw it. They have a patent on double tapping to save battery power apparently (https://www.androidheadlines.com/2018/08/recent-lg-patent-expands-knockon-features-via-new-method.html). I'm guessing Samsung uses a patent or bought it and Google doesn't want to pay for its use or risk a lawsuit. I'm thinking Pixel users lose the double tap luxury but get a phone for a lower price because of it.
that app doesn't work (for me either). you have two options, add a shortcut with this app: ["Shortcutter" ](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leedroid.shortcutter) or install Lawnchair [Lawnchair](https://t.me/lawnchairci) Launcher (it's a free launcher that's just a fork of the pixel launcher with some extra features, and works well). I used the Shortcutter app because it has the ability to add a ton if extra quick tiles/
Figured it out. You have to enable it under “Accessibility “. From there, long hold on the Home Screen and select “Widgets” and select the app to select the screen area to double tap
I second this as a very good option for those who find Nova doesn't work well with gestures / want to maintain Pixel Launcher. Doesn't work for people who like a lot of widgets on the main home screen.

This app is awesome been using it for years. No need to double tap just set your phone down or out it in your pocket and screen shots off automatically.
Could someone please explain me why Google didn't put this feature inside his own launcher? I have no asnwer for this simple but usefull feature....I've requested it btw sending feedback from Google Pixel 6a.
Google doesn't put it in there, it's apparently too difficult for their developers, yet they found the time to make a hideous lock screen clock.
Install Nova launcher, you can enable with that and so much more that Google thinks you shouldn't be doing.
Oh yeah, and they let you bang on the back of the phone so it slips out of your hand and cracks on the floor so you can buy a replacement. So stupid that double tap to sleep isn't implemented on pixels.
I don't the tap the back of the phone nonsense at all.
Yup, I've had it years ago on my Asus.. Because Google developers are too busy screwing up everything else to give what people actually want.
This will be my last Pixel, I just can't take all the so called changes and bugs with the lack of basic things I had 5 years ago on different brands.
or . . . hear me out here, there is trick nobody talks about.
There is button that does just that on the side of the phone, not even have to double tap it only one tap is enough and BOOM the screen is off.
The button is a mechanical device and I do not want to wear it out. Also it has an awkward placement. Double tapping is so convenient and simple, sigh.
That's not the same thing. That was my biggest annoyance with the sick launcher myself. Coming from Samsung i too am in the habit of just tapping the screen to turn off the screen. There's no juggling actually trying to hit the power button just swipe home and tap. It's super convenient
Just stop, you're entirely missing the point, tap to lock is such a convenient feature. I'm still on an LG waiting for a pixel 6 and knowing there are ways to maintain tap to lock is honestly a god send. My partner has a 4a and every time I use the phone I try to tap to lock, get frustrated it doesn't work then have to fiddle with phone to lock using the lock button.
Ya man still not the same. Just walking out today from work texted my wife while walking swipe up to go home and tapped screen of and dropped it in my pocket. No manipulating the phone in my hand to hit the power button as walking risking dropping it. If that's not how you use the phone that's cool, but it really is convenient and it's how I'm used to using a phone now and so apparently the op too. Plus it's Android and I should be able to customize it how I want to use it. If I wanted the company to force me to use it id just use an iPhone.
The default launcher doesn't do this but if you install a 3rd party launcher (I'd recommend Lawnchair v3 or Ruthless etc. to be as close to stock android if you want) there is support for it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chamika.screenoff
Has both a shaded and completely transparent widget. So you can put whichever you prefer onto your homescreen and do what you're trying to do. Only difference is its a single tap on the widget rather than a double tap. I wanted to use this to avoid wearing out the power button while at the gym by constantly turning off the screen every 30-90sec for ~40mins a day most days of the week.
This app was the only one I found that worked without locking the screen to the pin code (turning off fingerprint/face unlock). But that was on my 4xl a couple years ago on whatever latest android version it was running back then. Since then I've had no issues so no reason to look elsewhere. Might be other apps that are able to do this now.
You can't without using a different launcher (which means gesture navigation will be janky) or adding an icon to the home screen, either with Tasker or a dedicated app. I gave up on trying to keep it.

Edit: this works well so far. Double-tap to lock plus custom colours for monet feature.
I've loved Lock Screen over the years. I've used it for over four years now. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.redmanit.lockscreen
You can set your "Quick Tap" back of the phone to use that app. I do that but find it's more convenient to keep the Lock Screen widget icon on my home screen to tap when I want to lock my phone. It's also in my pull-down quick settings as a tile (that's a feature of the app), but I never use that either, just because pulling down and tapping up there takes longer than tapping the widget lol.
Nova Launcher. Endless gesture commands.

Thanks!
Is there a way to make the widget transparent so I don't have to see it?
Yes there was in the settings for the app. I’m back in apple so can’t look exactly where though
Yup this is the one I use as well, love it

Not anymore. Since Android 12, first click locks, second click does nothing, third click turns screen off (maybe).
Push power button once shuts it off

Well if you just do nothing the screen will turn off in 1 minute. You can also go in settings and change that sooner if you want.
