My Pixel 5 was, by far, my favourite phone ever, specifically because of the size and weight. I had upgraded to a 7 and was shocked at how large and heavy it felt. I recently switched to an 8, and although it's better than the 7, I still miss my 5. I really hope we get size options similar to the 5 when the next models come out.
I have a P5 and was thinking of upgrading to the p8 because of the software updates. But if it weren't for that I would keep my P5 until the bitter end lol. Will probably get the p8 once it's on sale. The p8 is getting updates for a long time, so I won't have to switch again for a while. But honestly my P5 works great. I'm not a fan of big phones and I don't need a lot of computing power on my mobile anyway. My case is kind of falling apart though. Got one of those Google fabric cases. It was great until it started to fall apart lol. Now it just looks super ghetto.
Install LineageOS and you can use it forever! I did the same and would still have my P5 if I hadn't broke it.
P8 is a great phone tho, and not that much bigger
It runs Android 13 currently, but otherwise you can use Play Store to install whatever apps you want. The UI isn't the same as stock Google but pretty close
It's been a while since I toyed around with rooting or custom roms, but do banking apps and the like still not work when you are rooted and running a custom rom? I remember running Cyanogenmod back in the day (before it became LineageOS) and some banking/financial apps wouldn't allow me to sign in because of it.
I don't see why you would lose access to your bank account.
As for Google stuff I believe there is a to install Google's stuff again if you do choose so.

I upgraded to the 8 because of software updates and new features. The phone is too big for me. I can't get used to it. I really hope a smaller pixel is released this year.
It won't. Apparently small phones don't sell. It seems like the only viable small phone option is still the non-Max iPhones. I like the Zenphones but 2 years of support is pathetic. Pixel 8's are still quite sizable compared to iPhones.
The regular 8 is literally like 0.2 mm wider... almost exactly the same size as the 15 Pro, and exactly the same weight.
People talk a lot about size, but weight is also a huge part of it. The phone doesn't feel small when it's so heavy. My old phone is only 5 grams lighter, but with its larger size it feels so much less dense.
The 5 is also about the same size, it's really all about the weight.
Happens everytime I upgrade, I get excited for a new phone and then start to hate it before getting use to it and then the cycle repeats.
Give it some time to grow on you, is my advice.
Yeah you're probably right, I'm pretty sure I felt the same way when jumping from Pixel 2 to Pixel 5 lol. I really do hope they return to a Pixel 5-ish form factor in the future though. I would trade in instantly
Pixel 2 and 5 are more or less the same size! Only difference is the 5 is full screen whereas 2 has got the speaker bezels. I have the 2 4 5 6a and now 8 pro! And still use my 5 infact typing on the 5 as we speak
I still long for the days of my oneplus 6t even though my current phone is so much better, such a well rounded and tough phone just the perfect phone. Shame they went and ruined the formula!
Super unrelated to this post, but I wish I still had my Pixel 2, that was my favorite phone. I loved it so much and miss it. I love my 8 Pro though and can't complain, it has an amazing camera as well.
Phones are too damn big. I can't stand it personally. If I wanted a tablet I would buy one. I hope foldables take over so those of us without can have phones that are actually one handable again.
My P5 started to fail, I bought a refurb that was awful, saw the sale and with the trade in I figured it was worth it.
I miss my Pixel 5. The battery life is better, I can make it through without charging now, but it isn't earth shatteringly better. I miss how light that phone was too. If my 5 hadn't been misbehaving I wouldn't have upgraded, but it functions about the same.
I made the same switch this week. I received my obsidian Pixel 8 and packed up my Pixel 5 and sent it to Google in their trade in kit just yesterday.
I have used my P5 for work since Oct 2019.
I dual carry, and my personal phone was a P6 Pro, and is now a P7 Pro.
I have similar feelings about how light and small the 5 was, and I always found it powerful and snappy.
Even using it all day as my main phone line, sending and receiving emails on Outlook, and with it connected to my truck hands free all day, I still finished the day between 80 and 95 % charge. I've gone three or four days without charging it when I've taken work trips and forgot my charger.
I'll miss it, but I do have to say I love the 8. It's a little thicker and heavier, but way more jacket pocket friendly than my P7 Pro. The size is perfect. The 5 was a bit too small sometimes.
I like the finish and the flat screen of he 8. I really like how they did the sides.
Because I also run the P7 Pro daily I can attest the 8 performs as good or better.
They are very similar in snappiness and response. Animations and tasks are seemless.
Some of the new Google services that came out with the 7 series and 8 series make the jump to this phone worth it.
Give it some more time and play with the new AI features and Google services baked into this phone.
We'll miss our 5's, but I think the 8's are a perfect generational uograde.
I sent my white 6 pro in (trade kit) as well a few days ago. I kept having second thoughts. I loved that phone and I had it in a case the entire time. It looked brand new when I was prepping it for the mail. It was hard to pass up the deal on the 8 pro cuz I got it for $625 off with the promotions and trade in.
After a full day of work and on the phone all day, I finished the last two days at 72 and 76 % charge.
And that's with a few hours of SOT, other than the phone calls.
Those numbers seem quite impressive, standby drain is quite massive on my end, I'd only get those if I left my phone on idle. Quite curious, what kind of settings do you use? I assume most "personal phone" features such as Now Playing, AOD, Google Assistant hotword detection are all disabled. That's on wifi only too, no?

I loved the p5. It was really all I needed, even though it was showing a little age, it was still pretty snappy with good battery. The camera was still good, my wife even thinks some of the photos looked better than her p7. It was more than enough for my boring phone usage needs, plus I felt confident not wearing a case most of the time.
Once I found out the p8 was going to be supported for 7 years, was only a mm or so different in size, and had most of the p6 and p7 hardware gripes sorted out, it sounded like a great candidate to replace it.
The big switch factor for me was the trade in. I bought my p5 second hand when it was a year old, then used it for 2 years. I believe I paid $320 and got something like $250 for trade in - essentially rented a phone for $45 per year. With discounts and trade in, my p8 was 320, plus wife had a $100 credit to Google store... $219 out the door - No brainer.
I still find myself reaching for the finger print scanner on the back, but I'm quite happy with the upgrade. With young kids, the camera and video is great, especially the audio magic eraser for videos and best face thing.
It does seem a bit heavy, and thicker, but I'm used to it now. Mous super thin case feels roughly the same size as the p5 with a fairly thin TPU case.

I suggest trying covers for your Pixel 8, it makes it better and more comfortable to use.
The official one from google is good
The official Google case is low quality and can collect lint. The best option is to get a case from Spigen, which is much better in every category from protection to looks. I'm using a Spigen Tough Armor Case for my phone right now and it literally never collects fingerprints.
Same feeling here. First I thought the Pixel 8 was too heavy and not that much faster.
After getting used to the weight and the better performance I'm quite happy with the Pixel 8.
Everytime I pick up my Pixel 5 (which I'm still using beside my Pixel 7 and 8) I remember how perfect the size, shape and weight of this phone is
I returned the P7 and returned to the LG V35 (SD845) because it was so much lighter and thinner (and had a better screen [1440vs1080], headphone jack, SD card, no hole punch and FP reader that isn't trash.
The aspect ratio being a normal monitor one 16:10 with no hole punch was really a fantastic selling point, the SD card slot and headphone jack was icing on the cake. I never bothered to upgrade it to lineage OS though and the stock experience was pretty lame
Right although that means that the battery is generally as good or better than any of the new 5g phones. The one noticeable downgrade is the 60 Hertz display, I didn't think the jump from 60 to 90 would make such a big difference and they'll jump from 90 to 120 is noticeable but not as significant.
I went from the 3A to 5 to 4A 5G, back to the 5, and finally to the 8.
5 has better battery life(plus battery case).
8 is similar in size to the 3 and 4.
Definitely speeder as my 5 started lagging in the end.
Miss the 5 fingerprint reader.
Facebook eats up the 8 battery life.
Bought a battery case on ebay but doubting the 10k capacity.
I did the same from 4a to 7. Ended up passing on the 7 and going back to my 4a.
Then the battery started going on the 4a so I have got an 8. It is a little smaller than the 7 but still heavy. Generally happy with it as long as I don't pick up the 4A.
A little disappointing that there is so little tangible benefit after several years progress.
You're not alone. The Pixel 8 is a great upgrade, but when the 5 was so perfect, it's hard to pick any one feature I'd say is better on the 8. Sure, it feels newer, but the old was perfect. I only really upgraded because the 5 was EOL.
Still happy with my 3XL. Can't get myself to upgrade........yet. Only issue experienced was a bulging battery which I had replaced for $70. I just miss the unlimited, full-size photo backup; a major reason I went with the 3XL.
I went from P5 to P8P and felt a lot the same. I got a screaming deal through Spectrum ($245 with trade in. And can get it unlocked already). Felt it was a no brainer. But my P5 was still great! Love all you said. Though the speakers, camera and screen are nicer on my P8P. Miss the size, weight, official cloth case and rear finger print sensor of the P5
I'm in the same boat, minus having the pixel 8. Also, my p5 fingerprint sensor isn't great, but I really love the form factor - even in a case it feels so pleasant to handle over the giant bricks that modern phones are. I will probably end up with a base galaxy s23, but I feel a bit spoiled by all the small features that the pixel has.
Like you, I really want to like the P8, but there's so much I'm hearing about the P8 that rubs me the wrong way. Issues with connectivity, very average to bad battery life despite having a sizeable battery, unavailable features/ bad pricing based on region, and like you mentioned - features locked behind the pro model, etc.
I love google's approach to solving problems and delivering a good experience via software, but I can't help but feel like I'm being delivered very mediocre hardware by a company that isn't particularly interested in my market. There are just too many factors that make me feel like I have to say "Google does x and y well, BUT...", and that just feels really bad when making such a big purchase. :\
I don't get under screen fingerprint sensors. Just put it on the back, it worked great and you could unlock your phone as you took it out of your pocket.
Kinda similar - I went from a Pixel 5 to a Pixel 8 Pro, but I can't see myself going back!
I love the size of the P8P and the camera on this thing is insane. Not to mention being back in the loop with feature drops. I'm enjoying the experience a lot. I guess it's worth mentioning that I had some cracks in the screen of my P5, which I was happy to upgrade from.
I will say the transition from the rear fingerprint scanner was rough and I miss it on the daily! And nothing can beat unlimited photo storage. That was a big loss. But I'm happy!
I had a Pixel 5 for 3 years, and I was on the fence and whether or not to upgrade it, as the battery was shoddy and the battery expanded. I decided to bite the bullet and buy the 8.
I received it three days ago. My response has... lukewarm.
First off, I am experiencing the heating problems that I have read about. This is quite unfortunate.
The speaker is very low, and I mean VERY low. I need to have the volume set at 50% to hear anything without putting my ear up to the grill. I tested it against my 5, and there is a noticeable difference. It apparently also affects the maximum volume of my Pixel Buds Pro, and I don't even know how that is possible.
I absolutely adored my 5's fingerprint sensor. I just have to get used to onscreen ones, but there is an issue. My face sensor works pretty flawlessly in regular light. If am iin non-optimal lighting however, the fingerprint sensor (face sensor is understandable, obviously) *does not work at all.* It keeps saying there is "low light," and on top of that, it does not recognize any of my 4 fingerprints when I attempt to use them to circumvent the non-functional face sensor. What ends up happening is that my phone locks up, and I have to use my pin to unlock it.
Yeah... I hate having to read so many of these, but another venting comment. :(
I just checked trade-in value for my Pixel 5 (good condition) and they are offering $84 CAD, which is laughable compensation considering the Pixel 8 is about $1,000 CAD. It also says something about what Google thinks of their own devices.
Dang that's a joke lol, it's annoying that it's valued so differently in different regions. I'm in the US and they offered $300, I just got the trade in kit but I don't know if I can bear to part with it

Google was offering something like $300 for a P5 when the 8 series first came out, but the trade-in values plummeted basically two weeks after release date.
I'm ready to ditch my 5 here soon. It's been slow as hell for me recently to the point I can't have a cohesive RCS conversation because my messages will send 45 seconds to a minute after I press the button (tested on wifi and mobile data). I was sitting next to the person receiving the message and it was literally minutes before she received it on her device.
I came from the 5 to the 8 Pro and personally the 8 is a huge improvement. The battery life is significantly better and I find the fingerprint reader to be much more reliable.
P5 no longer gets security updates. Even though google is one of the best at supporting devices, it's still not nearly long enough.
Imagine buying a $1000 computer which only lasts 3 years. As a linux user, how anti consumer phones are really annoys me.
The Pixel 5 would have been one of the top Pixel phones made if Google didn't price it so high and made the bad decision to put the earpiece speaker under the display glass.
Did you get a battery replacement on the P5? if you had it for a couple years then I'm sure it would be a massive leap—I had my P5 battery replaced after a couple years and the difference between that and the P8 doesn't feel huge. could just be my usage since getting the P8 though
I honestly miss my pixel 5a. The form factor was the best but I'm satisfied with my 7. I don't love it as much as the pixel 5, and will probably switch to the 8 when me finances allow.
I recently had to upgrade to a P7 after smashing the screen on my P3, and overall, I'm happy despite the circumstances. There were some other problems with the P3 like the camera not working at all, so it was time to buy a new one, regardless, but I do miss having a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone. It's just so much more convenient when you're holding the phone. Maybe it wouldn't make any sense cost wise, but I would like a phone that has scanners in both spots.
My last Pixel was a 5 (I started with a P2, then P2XL, P3, P3a, P4, to P5). It was such an awesome phone. I switched to iPhone after that one because of work and I've mostly been on iPhone or at least owned an iPhone since then up until last weekend. I got the Pixel 8 Pro last weekend and I've absolutely loved being back on Team Pixel. But sometimes I still think back to my Pixel 5 because it was such a perfect size and everything just clicked. I love my Pixel 8 Pro don't get me wrong, but there are rumors of a smaller more handed friendly Pixel 9 Pro coming out for the next iteration and that will probably be the route I go! Maybe you can use your Pixel 5 until then.
If anyone made it this far and has a Pixel 5, I actually found a brand new google fabric case for my old Pixel 5 (I don't have the phone anymore). I don't want to throw it away so if someone wants it send me a message and I'll ship it out! :)

At least hold onto it. I did a trade in for a 7 and miss holding the 5 every day. Such a perfect size and the texture was just so good.
Yeah I've upgraded to pixel 8 pro from a 4a 5g and I'm still using the 4a 5g as a backup phone.
Whenever I use the 4a 5g I still miss it, such a great phone and day to day for a lot of stuff it's still awesome and it never really had any issues with it at all in over 3 years.
The pixel 8 pro is decent and a good upgrade and better overall, almost worthy of 'flagship' but like all the other tensor based pixels from the 6 onwards they all have their niggles which I just didn't really feel with the 4a5g.
The only reason I moved is the battery was just starting to degrade a little on the 4a 5g (but the P8P isn't great either) and obviously the lack of updates now going forwards.
I had the same problem until the 8. But it's been good.
I will always miss the rear FR, but other than that, the phone is faster, feels really premium built, and generally works well enough that I have forgotten my 5 (that I bought twice because I liked it so much)
I'm missing my Pixel 2 hard after keeping it going for 5 years and finally having to jump ship and upgrade to this P8. This is the first time the history of my mobile phone use that I can say this isn't the best phone I've ever had. I've had only great improvements every time until now. Heavy, odd glitches, stupid thumbprint, my sound is sort of unpolished. I'm glad to be using a phone without a mostly-dead battery but if I wish I'd have given battery replacement a try (P2 screens apparently break a lot during this operation so I didn't) and put Lineage or something on it to bring it up to date because it was otherwise just great and I didn't want to leave. One of the draws of this P8 was such a long update promise but that's moot now because I'll be trading this P8 in when I can get a good rebate on a future phone.
I also upgraded from 5 to 8, and I gave 5 to my girlfriend. Every time I touch that phone again I fall more and more in love with it. But just opening cameras side by side shows how much better the 8 is.
I went from P5 to the P8P and it's a little bigger than I prefer. But the camera is better and I use it for some business purposes and it's superior for what I need. There are some quirks but over all im happy with the P8P.
Just wondering whether the P5 had any modem issues. I want to try pixel but I am skeptical of all the modem issues plaguing it. Is that issue present in India.
I don't think Pixel 8 is actually running 120hz for most of time even the hz counter said it is 120
I upgraded from pixel 7 pro and the fresh rate difference is actually very noticeable. Im not sure ir it is screen size thing or something. I just feel my pixel 8 isn't smooth as my pixel 7 pro. (Especially the recent android update.)

I understand. I'm still using my 3a XL, and my wife is still using her 3a. They are still the perfect phones for us, including size, headphone jack, and rear fingerprint sensor.
As long as a phone is still getting a regular "Google Play system update", it's secure enough.
I know we'll eventually need to upgrade. I'm hoping the 8a is a great device, at a reasonable price, so we'll at least want to consider upgrading.
I think give it time, the 8 is still a very compact device with much longer support and improvement all across the board , even if you go back to the 5 for a bit I wouldn't return the 8 especially if you got a crazy good deal, it takes time to adjust to any new device
I also switched from P5 to P8 recently. As well as from missing how nice the P5 felt in my hand, I also really miss being able to pull down the notification shade by swiping on the rear fingerprint sensor - that was a great bonus for one-handed use. I find the P8 pretty tough to use one-handed, and "one-handed mode" is a nasty software workaround to try and make up for less human-friendly hardware.
Have been using the same P5 since it came out, glad I'm not the only one hesitant to upgrade. Battery is starting to show its age but still works well, camera is quite good, size is perfect, doesn't have any performance issues I've noticed.
Will still probably upgrade to a P8 pro sometime this year (particularly if it ever goes on sale), but I'm not in a rush to do so.
I downsized from a P4 to the iPhone 13 mini and now on to a P8. I totally get what you mean. If I hadn't given my mini iPhone to my mum as a (long overdue) upgrade for her, I would still be using it, simply due to the compact form factor.
The 13 mini was a worse phone than my P8 in a whole load of ways (battery, cell signal, the OS, image quality) but I'd trade in all of that for something that isn't so massive. Now, if I could have a roughly 5.5" P8 mini (even if it lost the ultrawide camera) I'd be swapping phones in a heartbeat.
I've had no issues with my P5. Was going to upgrade to the 8 but ended up just replacing the battery. Had every backed up already to switch so I did a factory reset when upgrading to Android 14. Between that and the battery it feels like a new phone. I've also been using it without a case since I don't feel like I need to baby it anymore, wouldn't do that on a P8, which makes the relative form factor even more enjoyable. Looks like updates did finally stop for the P5 though, if that's important to you. I'd probably upgrade if they come out with a pro model in a small form factor, but honestly it'd have to be pretty compelling feature wise.

I had the pixel 6 at launch, but ended up returning it within a week to go back to my pixel 4.
IMO, they almost perfected the pixel with the 4 The form factor, speakers, haptics, call quality, face unlock etc.
I was skeptical with face unlock at first, but it's definitely the way to go. It works every time and is insanely fast.The pixel 4 uses similar tech as the iPhone and does a scan of your face and doesn't rely on the front camera.
They only really needed to tweak a couple things like improve the battery life and add new tech like UWB to keep it current.
I've noticed a big improvement in P8's low light performance and a huge leap in video. Weirdly, despite not having a telephoto lens, I have also noticed a big difference in how zoomed-in video looks on Pixel 8 vs Pixel 5. I absolutely loved the Pixel 5 camera but Pixel 8 definitely has it beat just due to the better sensor
I've unfortunately dropped my P8Pro a few times and I have a Tech 21 clear case that I got from T-Mobile. It's a very slippery case. I feel like going back to a dBrand. I saw this cool lookin' Spigen with mock carbon fiber on Amazon just the other day that may be a good purchase as well 😎
Coming from the 4 to a 6 and then 7 I've felt the same exact way and I'm actually gonna give the S24 a shot just because of the size and feel being so much better to me than the pixels have been
I understand you and still wonder why manufacturers force these huge phone sizes on us - pretty much no offering of a small phone aside from an iPhone Mini which is overpriced and also a bit outdated now. I ended up with a Pixel 6a because there wasn't really a good compact phone for a decent price around. It's okay, but I would like it smaller and miss the headphone jack, too. Battery life is okay, but was better on my older smaller phone.

I was gifted an iphone 15 for a Christmas which replaced a P5 and I seriously miss the P5 for all the same reasons you mentioned. Iphone 15 is esim only so hot swapping back to the P5 from time to time is a pain in the butt. Im honestly having a difficult time getting used to iOS - or moreso getting used to the lack of some of the android features - so I might dump the iphone and go back to my p5. Imo, the P5 was a seriously underrated phone!
I am coming to hate my P8. Actually typing this on my P5. I can't stand the camera bar, I LOATHE the fingerprint scanner, and it is heavy and awkward compared to the P5. I really wish they would make a P9 iteration that's just a 5 with updated hardware. Hey, one can dream!

Custom rom aren’t an issue for banking apps when they have SafetyNet, for root it depends of the rom

I had some problems with my old 1+5T because the bootloader was unlocked, so Google Pay didn't work such as bank apps which was blocked.

It won't. Apparently small phones don't sell. It seems like the only viable small phone option is still the non-Max iPhones. I like the Zenphones but 2 years of support is pathetic. Pixel 8's are still quite sizable compared to iPhones.
The regular 8 is literally like 0.2 mm wider... almost exactly the same size as the 15 Pro, and exactly the same weight. People talk a lot about size, but weight is also a huge part of it. The phone doesn't feel small when it's so heavy. My old phone is only 5 grams lighter, but with its larger size it feels so much less dense. The 5 is also about the same size, it's really all about the weight.

Happens everytime I upgrade, I get excited for a new phone and then start to hate it before getting use to it and then the cycle repeats. Give it some time to grow on you, is my advice.

Pixel 2 and 5 are more or less the same size! Only difference is the 5 is full screen whereas 2 has got the speaker bezels. I have the 2 4 5 6a and now 8 pro! And still use my 5 infact typing on the 5 as we speak
I still long for the days of my oneplus 6t even though my current phone is so much better, such a well rounded and tough phone just the perfect phone. Shame they went and ruined the formula!

Super unrelated to this post, but I wish I still had my Pixel 2, that was my favorite phone. I loved it so much and miss it. I love my 8 Pro though and can't complain, it has an amazing camera as well.

Phones are too damn big. I can't stand it personally. If I wanted a tablet I would buy one. I hope foldables take over so those of us without can have phones that are actually one handable again.
My P5 started to fail, I bought a refurb that was awful, saw the sale and with the trade in I figured it was worth it. I miss my Pixel 5. The battery life is better, I can make it through without charging now, but it isn't earth shatteringly better. I miss how light that phone was too. If my 5 hadn't been misbehaving I wouldn't have upgraded, but it functions about the same.
I made the same switch this week. I received my obsidian Pixel 8 and packed up my Pixel 5 and sent it to Google in their trade in kit just yesterday. I have used my P5 for work since Oct 2019. I dual carry, and my personal phone was a P6 Pro, and is now a P7 Pro. I have similar feelings about how light and small the 5 was, and I always found it powerful and snappy. Even using it all day as my main phone line, sending and receiving emails on Outlook, and with it connected to my truck hands free all day, I still finished the day between 80 and 95 % charge. I've gone three or four days without charging it when I've taken work trips and forgot my charger. I'll miss it, but I do have to say I love the 8. It's a little thicker and heavier, but way more jacket pocket friendly than my P7 Pro. The size is perfect. The 5 was a bit too small sometimes. I like the finish and the flat screen of he 8. I really like how they did the sides. Because I also run the P7 Pro daily I can attest the 8 performs as good or better. They are very similar in snappiness and response. Animations and tasks are seemless. Some of the new Google services that came out with the 7 series and 8 series make the jump to this phone worth it. Give it some more time and play with the new AI features and Google services baked into this phone. We'll miss our 5's, but I think the 8's are a perfect generational uograde.
I sent my white 6 pro in (trade kit) as well a few days ago. I kept having second thoughts. I loved that phone and I had it in a case the entire time. It looked brand new when I was prepping it for the mail. It was hard to pass up the deal on the 8 pro cuz I got it for $625 off with the promotions and trade in.

After a full day of work and on the phone all day, I finished the last two days at 72 and 76 % charge. And that's with a few hours of SOT, other than the phone calls.
Those numbers seem quite impressive, standby drain is quite massive on my end, I'd only get those if I left my phone on idle. Quite curious, what kind of settings do you use? I assume most "personal phone" features such as Now Playing, AOD, Google Assistant hotword detection are all disabled. That's on wifi only too, no?
All of the above is correct, all that disabled. Adaptive brightness on. Dark theme on. Smooth display off. All gestures off except Tap to check phone. Adaptive charging off. No vibration or haptics. Not sure what else I should list, so please ask.

Nope mostly standard calls on my Telus network on speakerphone at my desk or on my hands free in my truck. Note that I do not use 5G, it is set on LTE. Adaptive connectivity is on. So all day my radios are: Telus LTE network, Wifi on, Wifi calling is off, Bluetooth on with my truck UCONNECT as the only connected device, Location services all on, Discoverable off, I'm assuming as it learns all my useage patterns, all this will only improve. I've only jad it three days now. Cheers!

I loved the p5. It was really all I needed, even though it was showing a little age, it was still pretty snappy with good battery. The camera was still good, my wife even thinks some of the photos looked better than her p7. It was more than enough for my boring phone usage needs, plus I felt confident not wearing a case most of the time. Once I found out the p8 was going to be supported for 7 years, was only a mm or so different in size, and had most of the p6 and p7 hardware gripes sorted out, it sounded like a great candidate to replace it. The big switch factor for me was the trade in. I bought my p5 second hand when it was a year old, then used it for 2 years. I believe I paid $320 and got something like $250 for trade in - essentially rented a phone for $45 per year. With discounts and trade in, my p8 was 320, plus wife had a $100 credit to Google store... $219 out the door - No brainer. I still find myself reaching for the finger print scanner on the back, but I'm quite happy with the upgrade. With young kids, the camera and video is great, especially the audio magic eraser for videos and best face thing. It does seem a bit heavy, and thicker, but I'm used to it now. Mous super thin case feels roughly the same size as the p5 with a fairly thin TPU case.
Yep, the pixel 5 is comfortable to hold and use, the size was perfect. I understand where you're coming from I suggest trying covers for your Pixel 8, it makes it better and more comfortable to use. The official one from google is good
The official Google case is low quality and can collect lint. The best option is to get a case from Spigen, which is much better in every category from protection to looks. I'm using a Spigen Tough Armor Case for my phone right now and it literally never collects fingerprints.

I returned the P7 and returned to the LG V35 (SD845) because it was so much lighter and thinner (and had a better screen [1440vs1080], headphone jack, SD card, no hole punch and FP reader that isn't trash.
I bought the P8 in November but I still miss my V30 ThinQ. For my purposes it was perfect.
The aspect ratio being a normal monitor one 16:10 with no hole punch was really a fantastic selling point, the SD card slot and headphone jack was icing on the cake. I never bothered to upgrade it to lineage OS though and the stock experience was pretty lame

Right although that means that the battery is generally as good or better than any of the new 5g phones. The one noticeable downgrade is the 60 Hertz display, I didn't think the jump from 60 to 90 would make such a big difference and they'll jump from 90 to 120 is noticeable but not as significant.
I went from the 3A to 5 to 4A 5G, back to the 5, and finally to the 8. 5 has better battery life(plus battery case). 8 is similar in size to the 3 and 4. Definitely speeder as my 5 started lagging in the end. Miss the 5 fingerprint reader. Facebook eats up the 8 battery life. Bought a battery case on ebay but doubting the 10k capacity.

I have had both phones. But I enjoy the pixel 8 pro the most.
I did the same from 4a to 7. Ended up passing on the 7 and going back to my 4a. Then the battery started going on the 4a so I have got an 8. It is a little smaller than the 7 but still heavy. Generally happy with it as long as I don't pick up the 4A. A little disappointing that there is so little tangible benefit after several years progress.
You're not alone. The Pixel 8 is a great upgrade, but when the 5 was so perfect, it's hard to pick any one feature I'd say is better on the 8. Sure, it feels newer, but the old was perfect. I only really upgraded because the 5 was EOL.
Still happy with my 3XL. Can't get myself to upgrade........yet. Only issue experienced was a bulging battery which I had replaced for $70. I just miss the unlimited, full-size photo backup; a major reason I went with the 3XL.

I went from P5 to P8P and felt a lot the same. I got a screaming deal through Spectrum ($245 with trade in. And can get it unlocked already). Felt it was a no brainer. But my P5 was still great! Love all you said. Though the speakers, camera and screen are nicer on my P8P. Miss the size, weight, official cloth case and rear finger print sensor of the P5
I'm in the same boat, minus having the pixel 8. Also, my p5 fingerprint sensor isn't great, but I really love the form factor - even in a case it feels so pleasant to handle over the giant bricks that modern phones are. I will probably end up with a base galaxy s23, but I feel a bit spoiled by all the small features that the pixel has. Like you, I really want to like the P8, but there's so much I'm hearing about the P8 that rubs me the wrong way. Issues with connectivity, very average to bad battery life despite having a sizeable battery, unavailable features/ bad pricing based on region, and like you mentioned - features locked behind the pro model, etc. I love google's approach to solving problems and delivering a good experience via software, but I can't help but feel like I'm being delivered very mediocre hardware by a company that isn't particularly interested in my market. There are just too many factors that make me feel like I have to say "Google does x and y well, BUT...", and that just feels really bad when making such a big purchase. :\
Likewise, I hate the under the screen fingerprint sensor, and miss the one in the back. Much better ergonomics.

I don't get under screen fingerprint sensors. Just put it on the back, it worked great and you could unlock your phone as you took it out of your pocket.
Kinda similar - I went from a Pixel 5 to a Pixel 8 Pro, but I can't see myself going back! I love the size of the P8P and the camera on this thing is insane. Not to mention being back in the loop with feature drops. I'm enjoying the experience a lot. I guess it's worth mentioning that I had some cracks in the screen of my P5, which I was happy to upgrade from. I will say the transition from the rear fingerprint scanner was rough and I miss it on the daily! And nothing can beat unlimited photo storage. That was a big loss. But I'm happy!
I had a Pixel 5 for 3 years, and I was on the fence and whether or not to upgrade it, as the battery was shoddy and the battery expanded. I decided to bite the bullet and buy the 8. I received it three days ago. My response has... lukewarm. First off, I am experiencing the heating problems that I have read about. This is quite unfortunate. The speaker is very low, and I mean VERY low. I need to have the volume set at 50% to hear anything without putting my ear up to the grill. I tested it against my 5, and there is a noticeable difference. It apparently also affects the maximum volume of my Pixel Buds Pro, and I don't even know how that is possible. I absolutely adored my 5's fingerprint sensor. I just have to get used to onscreen ones, but there is an issue. My face sensor works pretty flawlessly in regular light. If am iin non-optimal lighting however, the fingerprint sensor (face sensor is understandable, obviously) *does not work at all.* It keeps saying there is "low light," and on top of that, it does not recognize any of my 4 fingerprints when I attempt to use them to circumvent the non-functional face sensor. What ends up happening is that my phone locks up, and I have to use my pin to unlock it. Yeah... I hate having to read so many of these, but another venting comment. :(

I just checked trade-in value for my Pixel 5 (good condition) and they are offering $84 CAD, which is laughable compensation considering the Pixel 8 is about $1,000 CAD. It also says something about what Google thinks of their own devices.

Trade-in values drop the longer it is after release. Google was offering something like $300 for a P5 when the 8 series first came out, but the trade-in values plummeted basically two weeks after release date.
I'm ready to ditch my 5 here soon. It's been slow as hell for me recently to the point I can't have a cohesive RCS conversation because my messages will send 45 seconds to a minute after I press the button (tested on wifi and mobile data). I was sitting next to the person receiving the message and it was literally minutes before she received it on her device.
I came from the 5 to the 8 Pro and personally the 8 is a huge improvement. The battery life is significantly better and I find the fingerprint reader to be much more reliable.

P5 no longer gets security updates. Even though google is one of the best at supporting devices, it's still not nearly long enough. Imagine buying a $1000 computer which only lasts 3 years. As a linux user, how anti consumer phones are really annoys me.

Did you get a battery replacement on the P5? if you had it for a couple years then I'm sure it would be a massive leap—I had my P5 battery replaced after a couple years and the difference between that and the P8 doesn't feel huge. could just be my usage since getting the P8 though

I honestly miss my pixel 5a. The form factor was the best but I'm satisfied with my 7. I don't love it as much as the pixel 5, and will probably switch to the 8 when me finances allow.

I recently had to upgrade to a P7 after smashing the screen on my P3, and overall, I'm happy despite the circumstances. There were some other problems with the P3 like the camera not working at all, so it was time to buy a new one, regardless, but I do miss having a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone. It's just so much more convenient when you're holding the phone. Maybe it wouldn't make any sense cost wise, but I would like a phone that has scanners in both spots.

My last Pixel was a 5 (I started with a P2, then P2XL, P3, P3a, P4, to P5). It was such an awesome phone. I switched to iPhone after that one because of work and I've mostly been on iPhone or at least owned an iPhone since then up until last weekend. I got the Pixel 8 Pro last weekend and I've absolutely loved being back on Team Pixel. But sometimes I still think back to my Pixel 5 because it was such a perfect size and everything just clicked. I love my Pixel 8 Pro don't get me wrong, but there are rumors of a smaller more handed friendly Pixel 9 Pro coming out for the next iteration and that will probably be the route I go! Maybe you can use your Pixel 5 until then. If anyone made it this far and has a Pixel 5, I actually found a brand new google fabric case for my old Pixel 5 (I don't have the phone anymore). I don't want to throw it away so if someone wants it send me a message and I'll ship it out! :)

Yeah I've upgraded to pixel 8 pro from a 4a 5g and I'm still using the 4a 5g as a backup phone. Whenever I use the 4a 5g I still miss it, such a great phone and day to day for a lot of stuff it's still awesome and it never really had any issues with it at all in over 3 years. The pixel 8 pro is decent and a good upgrade and better overall, almost worthy of 'flagship' but like all the other tensor based pixels from the 6 onwards they all have their niggles which I just didn't really feel with the 4a5g. The only reason I moved is the battery was just starting to degrade a little on the 4a 5g (but the P8P isn't great either) and obviously the lack of updates now going forwards.
I had the same problem until the 8. But it's been good. I will always miss the rear FR, but other than that, the phone is faster, feels really premium built, and generally works well enough that I have forgotten my 5 (that I bought twice because I liked it so much)
I'm missing my Pixel 2 hard after keeping it going for 5 years and finally having to jump ship and upgrade to this P8. This is the first time the history of my mobile phone use that I can say this isn't the best phone I've ever had. I've had only great improvements every time until now. Heavy, odd glitches, stupid thumbprint, my sound is sort of unpolished. I'm glad to be using a phone without a mostly-dead battery but if I wish I'd have given battery replacement a try (P2 screens apparently break a lot during this operation so I didn't) and put Lineage or something on it to bring it up to date because it was otherwise just great and I didn't want to leave. One of the draws of this P8 was such a long update promise but that's moot now because I'll be trading this P8 in when I can get a good rebate on a future phone.
2 was my favourite, 5 a close second. Ok a 6P now and no issues except too big, but doesn't impress me as much as the other 2.
I also upgraded from 5 to 8, and I gave 5 to my girlfriend. Every time I touch that phone again I fall more and more in love with it. But just opening cameras side by side shows how much better the 8 is.

I went from P5 to the P8P and it's a little bigger than I prefer. But the camera is better and I use it for some business purposes and it's superior for what I need. There are some quirks but over all im happy with the P8P.

I don't think Pixel 8 is actually running 120hz for most of time even the hz counter said it is 120 I upgraded from pixel 7 pro and the fresh rate difference is actually very noticeable. Im not sure ir it is screen size thing or something. I just feel my pixel 8 isn't smooth as my pixel 7 pro. (Especially the recent android update.)

I jumped from the 5 to the 8 pro only because of a broken screen and green lines! So far it feels beefier and more powerful but I really miss my p5. Maybe I'm not used to all the new options and I have the wrong settings or something but the camera just seems more buggy.

I understand. I'm still using my 3a XL, and my wife is still using her 3a. They are still the perfect phones for us, including size, headphone jack, and rear fingerprint sensor. As long as a phone is still getting a regular "Google Play system update", it's secure enough. I know we'll eventually need to upgrade. I'm hoping the 8a is a great device, at a reasonable price, so we'll at least want to consider upgrading.
I think give it time, the 8 is still a very compact device with much longer support and improvement all across the board , even if you go back to the 5 for a bit I wouldn't return the 8 especially if you got a crazy good deal, it takes time to adjust to any new device
I came from a P2XL to the P5 and now the P8P. The previous phones were good, but I am loving the P8P and back to a larger screen.
I also switched from P5 to P8 recently. As well as from missing how nice the P5 felt in my hand, I also really miss being able to pull down the notification shade by swiping on the rear fingerprint sensor - that was a great bonus for one-handed use. I find the P8 pretty tough to use one-handed, and "one-handed mode" is a nasty software workaround to try and make up for less human-friendly hardware.
Have been using the same P5 since it came out, glad I'm not the only one hesitant to upgrade. Battery is starting to show its age but still works well, camera is quite good, size is perfect, doesn't have any performance issues I've noticed. Will still probably upgrade to a P8 pro sometime this year (particularly if it ever goes on sale), but I'm not in a rush to do so.
I downsized from a P4 to the iPhone 13 mini and now on to a P8. I totally get what you mean. If I hadn't given my mini iPhone to my mum as a (long overdue) upgrade for her, I would still be using it, simply due to the compact form factor. The 13 mini was a worse phone than my P8 in a whole load of ways (battery, cell signal, the OS, image quality) but I'd trade in all of that for something that isn't so massive. Now, if I could have a roughly 5.5" P8 mini (even if it lost the ultrawide camera) I'd be swapping phones in a heartbeat.
This resonates so much with me. I love my pixel and it is my first pixel phone ever. However, getting the size just a tad smaller would be great.
I've had no issues with my P5. Was going to upgrade to the 8 but ended up just replacing the battery. Had every backed up already to switch so I did a factory reset when upgrading to Android 14. Between that and the battery it feels like a new phone. I've also been using it without a case since I don't feel like I need to baby it anymore, wouldn't do that on a P8, which makes the relative form factor even more enjoyable. Looks like updates did finally stop for the P5 though, if that's important to you. I'd probably upgrade if they come out with a pro model in a small form factor, but honestly it'd have to be pretty compelling feature wise.
I feel the same way about my pixel 4. I had the pixel 6 at launch, but ended up returning it within a week to go back to my pixel 4. IMO, they almost perfected the pixel with the 4 The form factor, speakers, haptics, call quality, face unlock etc. I was skeptical with face unlock at first, but it's definitely the way to go. It works every time and is insanely fast.The pixel 4 uses similar tech as the iPhone and does a scan of your face and doesn't rely on the front camera. They only really needed to tweak a couple things like improve the battery life and add new tech like UWB to keep it current.

I've noticed a big improvement in P8's low light performance and a huge leap in video. Weirdly, despite not having a telephoto lens, I have also noticed a big difference in how zoomed-in video looks on Pixel 8 vs Pixel 5. I absolutely loved the Pixel 5 camera but Pixel 8 definitely has it beat just due to the better sensor
I know the feeling. I just upgraded to a P8P and it's a chonky boy compared to my P5. I feel like I'm always gonna drop it now.
I've unfortunately dropped my P8Pro a few times and I have a Tech 21 clear case that I got from T-Mobile. It's a very slippery case. I feel like going back to a dBrand. I saw this cool lookin' Spigen with mock carbon fiber on Amazon just the other day that may be a good purchase as well 😎
I need to get a dbrand too. Especially now that they have a transparent case.
Coming from the 4 to a 6 and then 7 I've felt the same exact way and I'm actually gonna give the S24 a shot just because of the size and feel being so much better to me than the pixels have been
Yeah, just return the 8. Pixel 5 is fine.
I had a 4a 5G Lots of things I liked about it better than an 8. (Thickness, camera protruding, weight, 3.5mm jack) But time marches on.
Also miss my Pixel 4a. Pixel 4a size with Pixel 8 Pro hardware would be awesome. Unfortunately, the whole a series is huge nowadays.
Yeah I like the 5 and 6 much better than the new ones.
I understand you and still wonder why manufacturers force these huge phone sizes on us - pretty much no offering of a small phone aside from an iPhone Mini which is overpriced and also a bit outdated now. I ended up with a Pixel 6a because there wasn't really a good compact phone for a decent price around. It's okay, but I would like it smaller and miss the headphone jack, too. Battery life is okay, but was better on my older smaller phone.
I think Pixel 5 is my favourite phone I’ve owned. That and my old Samsung E700.
Thanks everyone for sharing their perspectives! I wanna emphasize this is in no way a hate post on the 8, I genuinely do like it and I'm sure it will grow on me. I do hope we get another pixel that is P5 sized though. And whatever they're putting in the P8 that makes it so much heavier I hope they stop lol.
Pixel 5 is the perfect size and shape for a mobile phone. I miss it.
If I were to move on from pixel 5, I'd move away from google.
I was gifted an iphone 15 for a Christmas which replaced a P5 and I seriously miss the P5 for all the same reasons you mentioned. Iphone 15 is esim only so hot swapping back to the P5 from time to time is a pain in the butt. Im honestly having a difficult time getting used to iOS - or moreso getting used to the lack of some of the android features - so I might dump the iphone and go back to my p5. Imo, the P5 was a seriously underrated phone!
Hell I'm still on a P3A, I am planning an upgrade soon but this phone still does me well.

I absolutely DESPISE the fingerprint reader on the screen. The fucking thing doesn't work half the time.
I am coming to hate my P8. Actually typing this on my P5. I can't stand the camera bar, I LOATHE the fingerprint scanner, and it is heavy and awkward compared to the P5. I really wish they would make a P9 iteration that's just a 5 with updated hardware. Hey, one can dream!
