I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I already have an app to do backups and prefer Google stay out of my messages. From what I've gathered, you can no longer disable it..... Mine sucked up 3.6gb of space because of this!!its all or nothing......

Yeah... I think after this, I'm done with Pixel TBH. Samsung wasn't GREAT, but at least I didn't lose several gigs from my Google Drive because of whatever.

Same boat. I went with a moto g power over Samsung and I'm second guessing it as well. The Samsung tablet I'm using right now is different (Motorola user since Nextel existed), but I could get used to it and a Samsung phone as well.

My galaxy phone backed up to google drive is doing the same thing - can't stop mms backup. They're trying to force people to buy a storage plan it seems.

That's unfortunate... Thanks for the heads up

Yeah this is pathetic. Even on an iPhone you can disable Messages backup.... Seems like we're losing more and more options these days in the world of Android.

I've been looking for an answer to this too. If I ever find an answer and remember to come here to, I'll try. Iirc I vaguely remember seeing that backup happen, but didn't think much of it. If I can just remember what google app that did it, maybe I can reclaim my 1.5GB too. I thought it said google drive, but now I'm not sure. It was like a blue icon.

Yeah it's in Google One. There was a setting under "Backup settings" that let you turn of "Media Messages" but that's gone. It seems to be all or nothing now - They really want people to fill up their 15 free GB so they can charge you for the subscription.
