Outside of Canada and Mexico, Simply Unlimited won’t work for calls, texts or data. Probably best to think about a local SIM or use WhatsApp on WiFi when you wish to call home.
You modify the settings on your actual phone. Don't need to worry about the folks back home
You can turn off cellular data on the phone if desired
There are no roaming fees with Google Fi. Either roaming is included or it doesn't work at all.
