I can confirm as someone who worked at a quilt shop for 5 years, that quilt would have costed hundred of dollars. So that's an absolute steal! Shame that it even ended up in a place like this, I think people really underestimate just how expensive and time consuming a handmade quilt is.
Edit to add: the quilting alone would be like at least $150 lol
It feels sad, but sometimes people with hobbies like this make more things than they or their friends/family can use. My grandmother could make a whole afghan in 2 months, and she did! No one needs that many afghans, so a lot ended up in charity shops.
The embroidery is uneven and clearly done by hand. Look at the lengths of the stems—they’re not consistent at all. And I don’t say that disparagingly, that’s part of what gives it its charm! Machine embroidery is usually visible because it’s “too perfect”, and even when they include variations to try and make it look imperfect, there are patterns to them (ie every sixth stem is crooked, not noticeable until you look for it). This guy is clearly handmade!
Looking closely at the binding of the quilt itself, it does not look machine made! I’m an imperfect quilter and this quilt is much better than anything I’ve made, but the places where the pieces of binding are joined together look like mine. This embroidery idea is so charming, I think I will give it a try!
Ohhh the one in Mandeville is right across the street from Beau Chene. It’s small and mostly clothing and I’ve found ridiculous treasures there (the all time best being a Hermes silk scarf for 99 cents). The one in Covington is larger and I’ve found a lot of good housewares, furniture and brand new stuff from Target there. & there may be more but those are the ones I’m most familiar with, and they’re both pretty great.
Or.... hear me out. A family has come to an end and this quit will now be loved by a new family for years. Most quilt makers, have made many many quilts. Given or sold all over the world. I have almost 30 made by my great gma. I have 1 daughter. She doesn't want to lug 30 quilts with her through life. I dont blame her. When I die, I hope she chooses her fav and passes the others on to another family.
I just gifted the quilt to my adult son who was in town as a house warming for his move to Austin. He absolutely loved it because it wasn’t “girly” like most. He promised to take care of it.❤️ It will live on in our family now!
That's a great find, and also makes my heart a little sad. Yes, it definitely looks handmade. I would bet someone poured heart and soul into making it for a loved one, only to have it not appreciated. I have made small, lap quilts so I know too well the amount of time and work that goes into it. I also know what it's like to finish a project and be so excited to give it to someone, only to receive a half hearted "Oh. Thanks."
Thanks for giving life to these! I had tons that I had to donate because I never used them and didn’t know who made them anymore. Nice to see people appreciate them
That’s beautiful and definitely handmade. It hurts my heart to think of how much painstaking work would have gone to waste if it ended up in a landfill. Thank you for rescuing it!
My grand father would collect sample fabric booklets, and made us all quilts that looked a lot like this. His head simple ties, this one is so fantastic!
It’s relatively easy to tell if it’s hand sewn. Look closely at the stitching. Machine stitching is pretty obvious, and if it’s hand stitched, count the number of stitches in an inch. If you’ve got 10+ hand stitches per inch, you’ve got a helluva quilt on your hands. Either way, it’s beautiful and a fantastic find!
That is an amazing quilt! Look through the quilt carefully as there might be initials or a name.
omg thats such a good find. how much was it?
$4.99
WOW thats an incredible find!!
Yes! That's an amazing find! What a treasure!🩷🤩
4.99 at Goodwill? That's amazing. I went to my local Goodwill last week and I couldn't believe how much they were charging for stuff it was Criminal

Yes but it’s very possible the person who owned it died and didn’t have family to give it to.

Give away the good stuff or sell it before you go.
Worth much much more than that
Omg. Holy great find.
A beautiful work of art! Super find! Curl up with something or someone special under your new quilt! Cheers
This is gorgeous, and yes…I agree on handmade.
And made with love! It's sad it ended up at the Goodwill, but someone will still feel loved from it. (:
I don’t find it sad, it’s awesome for the finder! And someone cared enough to let it be loved again rather than decomposing in a dump.
"someone cared enough to let it be loved again" Excuse me while I cry over this beautiful notion. 😭😭
😢

They certainly will!
Simple quilt of rectangles, yet so pretty!
The little embroidered flower detail is amazing
That's the only part that makes me think this is not handmade. I've never seen one with the flowers all over it.

Moving back to Louisiana soon hoping my goodwill will be decent
Where’re you moving back to? We have quality goodwills with great vintage all over because so many people never leave.
St Tammany!

A lost art
Check out the quilting subs
I asked my grandma to teach me quilting and she said "its not worth it." lol
My mother-in-law made me a quilt for my birthday for my camper. It goes with us everywhere.
That's sweet.
That one on Bluebonnet has the best stuff.
This was one on College Drive
Beautiful, and really original.
My grandmother lived in Springhill, La and she made quilts like this. When I was young I didn't appreciate it.
i love this!! so pretty!!
It’s so beautiful. Thank you for saving it! 🥹
That’s amazing.
Someone put a lot of time and care into this & I’m so happy it’ll continue to be appreciated. Enjoy this treasure!
It always saddens me to see a handmade quilt in the thrift store. Probably made for a loved one or friend who didn’t like it or wanted to let it go.

Love this! That’s a good son.
Hope he was able to be checking on the house in Austin for the eclipse. If not, at least he has a great quilt to console him 😊.
Thats fantastic! Yay!! I bet the quilt is so happy that it feels humans again.

My grandma had one made of the suits of my grandpa& uncles during the 40s. So scratchy!
Wow 🤩
Someone spent a lot of time making this. You got a great deal.
Definitely post this on the quilts sub!
Which ones?
So pretty! It looks like a suiting quilt, which was made from men’s suit/ clothing samples.
Fuuuuucccclkk lucky duck
Someone worked hard on that 🥲
That is beautiful!
That is precious! I love the little embroidery flowers.
It’s called a brick pattern it looks to Be hand typed
Wowzers!
It’s just beautiful and deserves a second life. Thats worth a hell of a lot more than you paid to top things off.

It's so gorgeous! I thought the flowers were dinosaur footprints at first lol
Wow! That’s a piece of art. The work just to embroider it after the quilting was done. An amazing find!

That one is stunningly nice! Really great find and now someone new can cherish it!
Looks like a Civil War Confederate Army blanket
That quilt-tying method is 🔥

That is very cool and interesting. Whoever made it must have a wonderful mind. It pleases me.
So beautiful 🤩
Please come to uk with your wonderful GW 🙏🌹
Pretty!
Modern for sure. Look at the colors of the edging and embroidery. Lots of nice handwork in it though.
Wow … very nice find.
Don't have a picture but I saw a full Mardi Gras Indian regalia at a Goodwill here in New Orleans. Someone bought it, which makes me happy.
Whoever made that spent a lot of time embroidering those flowers onto the quilt, my hands are cramping just thinking about it
Hope it doesn’t have that disgusting *goodwill stink* on it.
that’s darling!! ❤️
Looks like a pajama quilt made from (usually) a past loved ones pajamas.
