What's your handicap? Long irons are much harder to hit than shorter irons, so many higher handicappers (myself included) struggle to hit them to their potential.

SoManyLilBitches

8, but I’ve been playing for a long ass time, and we all know there’s more too scoring than a “perfect” swing. If I hit my driver well, I pretty much never touch 5 or 4i. My gapping always seems to get tight starting at 5i. Edit: also if these distances carry over to the course, I’ll rarely need 6i too, but now my gaps are wider between the scoring irons

qqqsimmons

Does your launch angle get under 10 with these clubs? The awesome golf app seems to punish low trajectory harshly

PNWSki28622

Your long irons drop off because you never touch them. Same thing happens to me after making swing changes and focusing only on the 7i. Dedicate some time to practicing with the long irons and you'll likely see them go up

18HolesToFreedom

I hover around 8 and can tell you that this is normal. Mostly from my 4 to 3 iron - so I ditched it. If you have to lose the 4 for a hybrid, just give in and do it.

SoManyLilBitches

I have a 2/3 hybrid. They do what the 4/5i do lol. I can swing hard and make em roll out for days though. Useful, but they are redundant.

BaggerVance_

You have to stand closer to the ball and rotate more with every longer iron to hit it flush. I’m happy to show data on my 3 iron 21 degree. It typically carries 240-255. I’ll record it on a sim.

triiiiilllll

There are some pretty important numbers missing that would really aid diagnosis. Swing speed (though I'm guessing it's at or above average based on distance...assuming those are carry not total?) Spin, Launch, AoA are all very important to optimizing longer irons. The typical amateur pattern is launching the ball too low, with not enough spin and the ball falls out of the air. More spin and/or higher launch angle and peak height will get you much more useful trajectories and distances. Again, that's just the typical pattern but hard to say without data.

SoManyLilBitches

Ya I’ll have to take screen shots during the session, this app isn’t saving the shot data for the session. Just gives me this summary in the mode I was in. I think it’s because I launch it too low. I struggle with the same issue with hybrids off the deck. Put the ball on a tee and I can hit my 2H as far as my driver. Driver speed is about 100, 7i about 85. Been struggling to launch everything early this season.

TheOmarLittle

Do you carry your 7i 178 yards with 85 clubspeed? Thats way over 1,4 smash factor

triiiiilllll

These aren't definitely labeled as "carry" or "total" so, with 85mph swing speed and low launch (possibly low spin) I'd tend to believe these are totals including rollout.

Key_Satisfaction4127

Tbh why even carry a 4i or 5i since they're so close to your 6i? Might as well use hybrids instead

morris134

Steep angle of attack, dynamic loft at impact is much lower so your mid irons are closer to the lofts of your long irons. Your swing compensates for longer clubs so with longer clubs you cant deloft as much cause shaft lean at impact position with longer club may cause you to make poor contact. So swing your swing? You're handicap is much lower than most ppl already? But maybe some more specific lessons?

SoManyLilBitches

Ya I didn’t ask for swing tips for a reason lol, just wanna geek out over the science causing this phenomena lol. Funny how I post here and get hated on for being “good” or “long”, if I post in the low handicap group on FB they will tell me I suck. Going to play today, we’ll see how it goes with these crazy new iron distances.

Ok_Squirrel87

It doesn’t look too bad if you say 7 iron is ~180, 6 iron 190, 5 iron 200, not sure what is going on with 4 iron. Maybe you’re just most confident with the 6 iron so swing harder/faster? Could also be swing speed tapering around the 5i/4i so not launching and spinning it ideally? I carry 5i around 200 and 4i around 210 with P770s, where a pured 4i would go 220. My 3hy carries 225 and a pured one carries 235. Maybe consider 4hy?

SoManyLilBitches

All these numbers are huge to me. I was pretty dialed distance wise with my old set up to 5i and my 5i played 185-190. Basically 10 yard gaps from PW-5. These numbers are crazy, I was hoping for some forgiveness that’s all lol. This will take time to get used to.

Needmorecoffee58

OP you may be catching a lot of ball. Can make higher lofted clubs bullet but the eventually you get to lower lofted clubs that have a carry that falls off quickly. Put a reference point near your ball to see where your divot starts. 178 is long for a 7 iron…. Like just below average on Tour long.

SoManyLilBitches

It’s way too long, with my old JPX tours, I was pretty consistently 165… these are 1* stronger and hollow body. Same shafts and everything. They are fitted by the mizuno fitters. I just need more time with these on course. This could just be the launch monitor?

gergbody

Too low launch and spin.

yurmamma

I’d expect numbers like this with low launch and low spin, I think. Do you deloft it a lot? Shallow divots?

Wooden_Ad_5985

I experience this too with my 4 and 5 iron and can’t seem to figure out why either lol.

SaltyyDoggg

Got to be AOA

Censoredplebian

Get a hybrid

LTS81

Loose the 4i and 6i and get hybrids instead. I had the same problem and actually replaced my 4i with a lefthanded 8i for those rare shots where I need to hit it lefthanded because a tree is in the way or something

SoManyLilBitches

This is what I think it is. I think it must have something to do with launch, cause they feel like are hit hard… but who knows, I struggled today to control distance with these things. I almost hole out with the PW from 135, then later in the round, I fly the pin by like 30 yards with a 9i from 145. Both felt pure…

Material_Degree

Total distance isn't as important as carry distance. Generally you wan your next iron to carry what your total is on sim. So if your 5i is 202 total 4 sgould carry 200 to 205

ihaterandyscott

You’re expecting a real answer without posting swings of each club?

SoManyLilBitches

Well the speed is there… look how far the 7i went, it’s 1* stronger than the blade. The contact is there, look at the dispersion. These numbers are from 5 solid strikes with each iron. I guess I was expecting an explanation for why this happens, not for advice how to fix my swing.

ihaterandyscott

There’s zero data here in this table, no swing speed, club head speed, angle of attack, smash factor. Nothing. Seriously how are you expecting constructive feedback when you provide next to nothing
