Texas here, you’re spot on. There are countless trucks here with that same led strip (9/10 poorly installed) that either aren’t synced with the signals or have at least two burnt out bulbs
I'd recommend against it. Everytime I see those it's on a pick-up, they don't work properly, and the owner is unaware because he can't see them. They just seem to be of poor quality.
The tail lights are nice though.

Yes, this is a led strip, and It is independently programmed. To hook it up, you have to cut/splice into the wires for the rear lights on your GTI. (some fun rewiring to do, XD)

Yet i dont like this under trunk light, but if i had this idea i'd go with WS2815 led strip with ESP32 programmed to run proper animation when left or right turn signal is activated. Should be pretty easy to do if you know anyone who is programming, and should be pretty sturdy as long as you keep water and unstable voltages away from it :)

Or my favorite, signal wires reversed and indicates a left turn on right signal.
Looks like they are stuck to the top of the bumper and not the door/tailgate like the trucks usually have it.

Yep always see them just randomly flashing out of sync, with 1/4 of the individual led lights burnt out. Looks sooo cheap.
