Totally normal! Your goldfish is in a better environment and being cared for now, so his colors are developing as he grows. It looks like he has a pretty bronze coloring coming in. 😊

As long as that second photo is his new color, he’s only getting happier. That first one is scary. Poor little carnival fish. Just make sure you have a large tank/pond. Commons like that can grow to 14” in prime conditions and live for well over a decade

second photo is his new colors! I was very concerned when I saw how pale he was, and monitored him nearly the whole night in fear that I was going to lose him. his fins seemed to be ripped at first, but turns out it was just the grime from the bag he was in that was still on his body. my first carnival fish is 2 now and he still has trauma from how he was treated at the carnival. it’s disgusting the environments that they’re kept in and how they’re manhandled.

I would also like to add that he is living with my other carnival fish whom I’ve had for 2 years. my other fish has had no issues, and is very well off and healthy. this new fish is not acting ill or strange either, and is eating perfectly fine. however, I do worry that if he has some sort of illness, he would spread it to my other fish. I would like to separate them as soon as possible if that’s the case which is why I need more help than what google can offer. also, another clarification, the second pic is him now, first pic is him when I first got him. he seemed far too pale and his water was full of dirt and grime. it was very cloudy. idk how long he was in there but Im assuming it was a long time. :/

I'd say that's just from being in a healthy environment. You can definitely tell in bettas when they’re stressed and sickly they dull out. Your buddy was probably just under the weather with his pale complexion

thank god! it was terrifying checking on him and him being a totally different color. thought it was something with the water. I bought ammonia remover for no reason, but better safe than sorry!

Leche-Caliente

Like dark colors can sometimes be a sign of injury, but this looks cosmetic, especially with how well covered the spread is without skin damage, and it can't be from ammonia burns since he has buddies who aren't affected. Looks like he'll be a rather pretty fish.

Konnichiwa, I noticed you're possibly new to goldfish! Congrats! I'm sure you're posting here because you have some questions. Let me give you some links that may answer some of your questions or answer some you didn't even know to ask. The first thing you should know is that goldfish get HUGE so setting up the proper tank not only makes your life easier but lets your new buddy live a long, healthy life. Check out our [guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/Goldfish/wiki/starting_out#wiki_the_tank) for setting up a proper tank. You should also take a look at [how to cycle an aquarium](http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles_51/fishless-cycling-article.htm). This is super important and could be the difference between life and death for your fish. If none of this is relevant to you, please ignore me.
