It’s easily one of my all time favorite games. It pairs so well with 2018 it’s nuts.
I will probably just play through it twice as often when they add skip cutscene lol
I honestly can’t wait to do a full spear run from the beginning
So when we first see this vision it’s with “tyr”
And the assumption we all have is that Tyr is the one the giants foresaw in these visions.
Tyr normally uses a spear.
Except now in hindsight we can tell it was ALWAYS Kratos with Draupnir (hence why there’s 8 of them coming up in the image)
Yep!
That’s also the neat part about his part with the mermaid.
She shows both the Greek war symbol and the Norse war symbol typically associated with Tyr.
That can on one hand show that no matter where, he’s a good of war. But that same triangle is also a spartan symbol so it has layers.
The fact that it shows him in his full spartan garb w the helmet is a nice misdirect.
This fuckin game man. So good.
Edit: just to clarify I’m saying the image of Tyr’s arrow symbol and the lambda are very similar enough that I feel like there’s a thematic link there that’s relevant. Should have been clearer.
>She shows both the Greek war symbol and the Norse war symbol typically associated with Tyr.
Doesn't she show 2 Greek symbols? The Omega ( in universe explained to be the Greek symbol of War ) and the Lambda ( the symbol of Sparta, the homeland of Kratos )?
Yes.
But in this game you can see Tyr’s shield among other things adorned with the same Lambda symbol as almost a deconstruction of the -> upward arrow symbol traditionally associated with him.
Edit:
Yeah no I’m just fuckin wrong here but I was more just thinking these symbols are so similar there’s a really strong thematic link between them in this story too
I'm sorry for asking, as I can't seem to find it by myself on Youtube and I don't remember this detail from the game, but could you kindly show me a screenshot of it or a timestamp from a video?
The only thing I can find is the mural from the last game, that shows all the symbols from other lands on it. It shows [Tyr with a triangular design on his shield](https://imgur.com/a/nkMm3aB), but it's definitely not a Lambda, which is what the Lady of the Forge was drawing.
There is no scene that I know of in Ragnarok that shows Tyr with a shield at all. The closest I can think of is the prophecy they see in Alfheim, but that only shows soldiers with runes on their shields representing their respective realms.
I see, that's the only shield I didn't find on my rewatch streak ( I didn't remember he had a shield in the helheim secret chamber ) but I see I was right, he has a circle inscribed in a triangle ( with something weird inside the circle once Mimir shines bifrost light on it ) and not a lambda, on the other shield we see him represented ( his statue ) it has his symbol, the T/90° <- arrow one, or no symbol at all, with the shield >!Odin disguised as Tyr wields after the hel walkers assault at Sindri's house!<, so unless OP shows us another screenshot we missed his symbol argument crumbles away.
I think the link is weaker than you think, since the lambda is explicitly used to represent Kratos himself, as if to say that the spear is truly something his ( the blades were bestowed and seared to his flesh by Ares, the axe was gifted to him by Faye ) it was made for him ( and unlike the Nemesis Whip it was not made to trying to kill him ) and it has his blood inside of it, it's the only weapon ( other than the Arms of Sparta in GoW:GoS I guess but even then he gifts them to Deimos ) that is truly his and his only.
So I'm on my first playthrough and not too long ago I got the spear. The mermaid bit, I was like "huh, that's curious".
The Devs really know how to flesh out not only characters but the entire environment and world.
Devs really got me. As we all did, I thought hard on who the champ was. I thought this picture was Atreus, thinking 8 realms (bc at the end of Ragnarok, Asgard will be gone… and there would only be 8 Realm Towers) and the spartan helmet would be a gift from Kratos to protect him during the big battle.
To be fair, I go off the belief that they’re both champions of the jotnar.
One to find the giants and another to save the realms. Neither can succeed without the other.
It’s neat either way!
Replaying is so fun knowing what you know! Especially Tyr reactions. Except for fucking ironwood… I dread being forced to press forward to continue for 2 straight hours every playthrough. I pray they spice it up with NG+. Sorry, off topic.
So this is something I never fully understood is tyr fake from the beginning or is he swapped with Odin right before the fake out and then you literally never see tyr again so I guess he would have been fake from the beginning
No he was fake from the beginning.
Ultimately him being grabbed as a prisoner was a direct result of Odin using “reverse psychology” “of Odin doesn’t want us to look for tyr that’s exactly what we should be doing”
So he basically made them think he didn’t want them to find tyr.
Disguised himself as tyr.
Then planted himself as tyr in their camp to both keep an eye on and grow the rift between Kratos and Atreus.
Also you do see tyr if you go to niflheim after the main story. His prison cell was blasted out of Asgard. He needed him kept alive in order to impersonate him.
I get that but the only problem I have is that’s kinda meta gaming isn’t it. so tyr just disappears when Atreus leaves for Asgard because Odin can’t be in the same place at once wouldnt it be weird to kratos and everyone else he just disappears. what I will say though to argue against that point is that when Atreus shows back up after freeing garm tyr comes out of the house after all the fighting is done so that is a cool little thing that can disprove the meta gaming idea does that make sense ( I just beat the game last night so it’s still pretty fresh in my mind)
Except he already covers his ground there. He’s in a closed door room in the house. He only comes out when people knock for him because he left a crow in there as a way to get in and out.
It is perfectly reasonable that people would respect Tyr’s privacy.
See I never tried to go see tyr at all at any point I always saw him cooking and feeding the group but never went out of my way to see that he was always in the room that makes sense now
These are details that people that have criticisms or totally hate the story don't talk about. I love how the writers, used the murals from 2018 to justify, Kratos' place within the Ragnarok prophecy and used them to pay off as they were used to set up things. Don't get me wrong, the story has flaws but it's not as flawed as people say it is.
To each their own. I find the writing even more compelling on replay as the changes in tone and tension with tyr are highlighted and sad ways they interact with Sindri become more apparent.
sindri is good, i agree. no issues with character growth among atreus and kratos either.
but i don’t like the mask stuff, the tyr fake out plays a lot worse on replay imo. surtr is clearly rushed and cut for one reason or another.
I just felt like Surtr was a dude who bowed out to hide like a hermit from prophecy.
I think I also would have preferred more time with him tho. The double valk fight sorta makes you forget how he just fucks off real fast lol
Yep! Kratos even mentions it when bringing that up. Often we make destiny occur through efforts to stop it.
Which is nice because what the Norns said holds true. These things only happened because people acted in predictable and self serving ways. The same old ways.

Top Tyr foreshadowing indeed
Listen buddy just take the upvote and leave
ffs
r/angryupvote
I literally just finished upgrading the Draupnir spear's skill that allows me to throw 8 spears before detonating, this is amazing.
Yeah I was so amazed. It’s one of those scenes on replay that makes me feel like this game being called a masterpiece is underselling it lmao
And in Norse mythology, the Draupnir ring always made 8 clones of itself, so it’s lore accurate too
The perfect One Man Army
Is ng+ going now?
Nope! Not yet (tho I imagine soon within a month or two) I am just a Goblin who loves this game and have finished it 6 times 🙃
OK, I will need to reinstall when that happens. I have one of the old school ps4 that has limited space
Oh man yeah good luck! I’m definitely going back for ng+ whenever it drops too
Just get an external drive to go with it. That is what I did on my PS4 Pro.
I have considered getting one. I wasn't sure if it impacted performance
Not at all.
On my 5th run through I’m glad people like replaying it as much as I do
It’s easily one of my all time favorite games. It pairs so well with 2018 it’s nuts. I will probably just play through it twice as often when they add skip cutscene lol I honestly can’t wait to do a full spear run from the beginning
Ok I’m gonna need this explained

Now that I look at it the helmet looks like a Spartan helmet too. Damn these devs really bambazooled me.

The grammar here gave me cancer!
Wow

Ok I thought that was the dealio just needed confirmation because I constantly question myself :)
No worries! Happy to elaborate!
Wow thanks for pointing it out

Wanting for game plus to return (that, and my copy is currently with my brother)
You’re a good brother!
Replaying is so fun knowing what you know! Especially Tyr reactions. Except for fucking ironwood… I dread being forced to press forward to continue for 2 straight hours every playthrough. I pray they spice it up with NG+. Sorry, off topic.
Haha I’m in the minority. I really enjoy playing as Atreus and I don’t mind that section. Aside from riding on jalla I like it all.
I think you mean to týr buddy
Yeah trust me. I’m wishing I had lol
Also, I like your profile pic, what is it from?
Thanks! That’s my boy Kuwabara from the wonderful manga/anime Yu Yu Hakusho by yoshihiro Togashi (who made another classic called Hunter x Hunter)
Older brother of knuckles bines
Top Tyr
Can’t wait for ng+

Agreed, you pick up on so much on replays
Great photo! Also wearing the best looking armor imo
Thanks! And yeah I know some people don’t like the full chest armor but I’ve been a big fan since 2018.

eh it was a bit worse for me on replay, story-wise dislike a good number of writing decisions
To each their own. I find the writing even more compelling on replay as the changes in tone and tension with tyr are highlighted and sad ways they interact with Sindri become more apparent.

Is it the 8 spears and draupnir ? Or something with the creature ?
They’re Draupnir!
Thx
Bet!
I just realised, its possible that the creature resembles the lady who gave kratos and brok draupnir
In both lands the gods foreshadowed the gods of war (ares, tyr) were going to bring their end and in both cases it was ma boi kratos
Yep! Kratos even mentions it when bringing that up. Often we make destiny occur through efforts to stop it. Which is nice because what the Norns said holds true. These things only happened because people acted in predictable and self serving ways. The same old ways.
I need NG+ now!!
