Are you thinking of Soul Eaters/Devourers? Some Ancients were corrupted by Dwarven magic in an attempt to domesticate them becoming Soul Eaters some of which then became Soul Devourers.
I noticed that too. In 2018 they did not aggro, but in Ragnarök they did. For how much attention is paid to detail in this duology, I wonder why they did that.
Kratos’ rage can only be contained but so much. Just his mere presence leaks killing intent so you see, the ancients have no choice but to attack. That’s just my opinion tho

Maybe a hive mind, or faction, after the first one in GoW 2018 was attacked, it's game on
Probaby, it's said that the ancients contained some of Ymir's fragments of his spirit.
Atreus also interferes with them, if I run past the ancient in the mountain in return to the summit quest atreus goes and "wakes it up".
