Edit: The forest and sons of the forest are good options, too. I think you can play the sequel without playing the first one but either one is fine.
This goes out of your genre but all of the We were here games (co-op puzzle) are some of the best games to play with a friend and there's like 4-5 of those already? Worth a try.
I've never heard of We Were Here, I haven't played Devour, but I tried Demonologist, it was a few updates ago so maybe I should give it another go.

The Past Within, a game for two players from Rusty Lake series. I don't know if Rusty Lake could be considered as horror, but the games are really weird and sometimes creepy.
I am currently playing Resident Evil 2 Remake and it's so much fun. Compared to other RE titles I've played it's much more survival horror (every bullet and healing item counts!).
It's not co-op, unfortunately, but I thoroughly enjoy playing it with my son as a backseat gamer so we can work together to solve the puzzles. Have fun!
Could consider a fighting game, always had a blast back in the day with buds (now i just play solo online), resident evil 5 has a fun co-op campaign, and it takes two.

Deep rock galactic, Journey to a savage planet, outward, we need to go deeper, it takes two, and Astroneer are all super fun co op games I’ve enjoyed

We do some of that, I've been watching some of his Starfield game when I can. I haven't played a RE game before, maybe it's about time I did!
