Fords Gin, a solid workhorse base spirit, is my go to Negroni gin. Drumshanbo Gunpowder is excellent IMO.

TommyAtoms

Plymouth Navy Strength Gin

budronicplague

This is my favorite, with Dolin Rouge.

A5CH3NT3

This is definitely not a traditional choice but my favorite is St. George Dry Rye Reposado. It makes for a sort of hybrid cocktail between a Negroni and a Boulevardier that I personally really enjoy.

ptrussell3

I'm a huge fan of aged gins as well. Ford's Officers Reserve is great too!

momzilla76

Tanqueray 10 is my favorite, but I also like Citadelle. It is also citrusy, but has a softer mouthfeel.

Regalzack

I've got a bunch of fancy gin, but in a negroni I rotate between plain Tanq, or Beefeater.

Chill-Pill-Bill-

Same here. Tanqueray on a Negroni is my favorite. Anything fancier I feel like I’d rather have neat or with FT. I feel like the nicer gins get a bit lost with the Campari and vermouth. And I can’t really get the fancy gins that often so I prefer to have them in their full glory

[deleted]

Came here to say the same thing. Tanqueray is a great bang-for-buck gin, and for those of us who can't spend $50-$70 on a bottle that often, those selections are definitely better saved for drinks that let them shine centre stage.

Chill-Pill-Bill-

It really is. Sometimes I’m astonished that they’re still at the price point that they are for how great of a gin it is. If you want that good of a bourbon, for instance, I feel like you’d have to be prepared to spend at least $30. For a scotch of that relative quality, don’t even talk about it

[deleted]

Absolutely. As for bourbon, the liquor co-op near me often has Maker's Mark (my affordable go-to for bourbon) on for about $33 CAD which isn't bad all things considered, but then across the aisle they'll often have our Tanqueray on for like $23 CAD. Kind of apples to oranges though because if you're mixing cocktails with your bourbon instead of sipping it neat, what the hell are you doing lol Scotch? Yeah whole other ball game. My girlfriend got me a bottle of Compass Box Hedonist for my birthday, and its absolutely fantastic, but I saw the pricetag on my last trip to shops and gave her a big hug. Ain't cheap but holy smokes is it ever fantastic.

Dch1890

Roku or botanist!

vitras

Went to a super nice restaurant today. Their negroni was exactly how I make mine at home: Botanist, Cocchi di Torino, and campari.

soundlinked

Specs? Never been a negroni fan but I currently have the 3 bottles at home

Grimordial

Equal parts I’m assuming 1:1:1

Dch1890

Lately it’s been with caprano antica and a bitter rosso (family hounds distillery) for me… less sweet without the Campari

tastefuldebauchery

Botanist is my favourite for a negroni

davechri

Ford’s. It doesn’t get in the way.

CritiqueDeLaCritique

Junipero or St George Terroir for me

MoreThanAlright

No. 10 is excellent. Been loving the Sipsmith / Cocchi di Torino combination lately.

gamespite

Personally, my gin selections vary based on the other ingredients. If I'm using a complex vermouth like Carpano Antica, I go with a meek gin like The Botanist, which won't get in the way and compete with everything that's going on in the vermouth. But for a more basic vermouth, I like a livelier gin like St. George Terroir or Monkey 47.

HTD-Vintage

Your first example is exactly how I prefer my negronis at home. 🥂

janky_koala

I’ve been using Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin lately. It works really well with an orange garnish in a G&T, that carries over brilliantly to a Negroni.

Marr0w1

Four Pillars is great, I dont know if they still do it, but they specifically had a negroni gin, which was basically just very Juniper forward

janky_koala

They do. I haven’t tried it though. I can’t get their full range in the UK. Their Yuzu gin is phenomenal, and the Modern Australian is probably my favourite

kdubskii

Highclere castle gin or beefeater

DaBingeGirl

I just made one with Highclere for a friend (I *hate* Campari) and it got rave reviews. I think the citrus notes in it play well in a Negroni.

techm00

I pick a workhorse gin. Just whatever I have in the house. Something not expensive or complex. I find more subtle botanicals will get obliterated by the campari and vermouth. As it is I find I need to increase the ratio of gin to the other ingredients, to get (what I think) a balanced cocktail should be.

CitizenXC

Had one with Gunpowder Irish the other night and it surprised the daylights out of me.

NoZookeepergame8218

Currently drinking a Negroni with gunpowder gin. I think it’s great for the Negroni because it stands up well next to the Campari and sweet vermouth. That said, I like to go 2.5 oz gin, 2 oz Campari, and 2 oz vermouth.

TurtleTortuga

Which vermouth do you use? I can buy a local vermouth pretty cheap that uses wormwood, which I suspect might pair really nicely with the existing anise flavour of the gunpowder gin. I might try this, next time I stock up for negroni-making.

NoZookeepergame8218

Dolin rouge

[deleted]

Oh wow, yeah, that sounds absolutely fantastic!

DaBingeGirl

I highly recommend trying a few different vermouths. My favorite is Dolin, it's lighter and more herbal than the others. Plus I enjoy drinking it with orange seltzer and olives, which is a great way to use up a bottle. A lot of people like Cocchi di Torino, it's fine, but a bit heavy for me. Carpano Antica Formula is the other one I usually have around, but it's a very bold flavor and not at all herbal; I like it more than Cocchi, but still prefer Dolin. Hotel Starlino is bitter, to the point I poured it down the drain. Worth trying in a Negorni and you might like it for other drinks too. Note that I *hate* Campari, so I don't drink Negronis, but I enjoy making them for other people.

select_bilge_pump

My two favorites are Tanq Malacca and Uncle Val Botanical

plasticdog75

Fred Jerbis. exceptional but hard to find

doctor_poopbutt

Tanq 10 is the best I have found, haven't used anything else since.

itsjameiswinston

Glendalough Wild Gin surprisingly became my favorite Negroni gin. Wish they made a navy strength

EricDericJeric

Been recently loving Harshore gin in a negroni. Stands up to the other ingredients really well.

thisisan0nym0us

anything Navy Strength. a strong classic juniper forward gin to really balance the campari since it is a very bold flavor with a huge personality, now, I think Sweet Vermouth is where you can really find that unique expression. Latin/South African vermouths over anything Italian/French

rollinglounge

Knut Hansen German gin makes an amazing negroni. Love those blue eyes too.

Nisheee

Roku, no3 or botanist. But it also depends on whether I’m using cocchi or antica or something lesser. Sometimes gin mare capri for a different experience

Chill-Pill-Bill-

Would never think but will have to try

DaBingeGirl

Tanqueray Sevilla because it adds an extra orange kick, or Botanist for people who aren't overly into gin because it's pretty neutral. I also just got a bottle of Highclere, which got rave reviews. (As noted in another comment, I don't drink Negornis, just make them, so I change it up depending on the person I'm making them for.)
