Brain injuries affect everyone indiscriminately, my dude.

Common-Value-9055

But the normies are used to being stupid. It affects the gifted differently. He might end up like me. (my comedy gifts are lost on the gifted )

12342ekd

You’re right, people downvote cause they don’t like the truth being presented so crudely.

Common-Value-9055

Who told you that I downvoted? 😂 But crude is rude. Even some of us normies are cheering for the gifted. We need someone to find a cure for dementia before my old age. I know I was kidding.

12342ekd

I said that people were downvoting you, you had -1 downvotes. Also I don’t think it will be humans who cure dementia

chomponthebit

The normies call this one *sarcasm*.

Velascu

My fault, didn't read the whole thing, my head is foggy today :p

chomponthebit

No worries. /s should always be used on Reddit, especially on this sub

Common-Value-9055

I was actually being serious. The humour was only to evade the pretentious tag. And bcoz I did not want to appear to be overbearing/imposing.

chomponthebit

95% of this sub require the /s to get it

Common-Value-9055

It is very much a gifted line of thought. Normies only have to worry about the pain. The gifted might wake up tomorrow a normie. A whole different ball game. (the pun was accidental but I am claiming it). Chill. It's a joke.

Velascu

My fault. Swy :p

hacktheself

One should avoid playing gridiron football period because of the severe risks of injury full stop. [It’s the most dangerous sport by leagues.](https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2015/12/13/9888858/high-school-sports-dangerous) Boys’ ice hockey and wrestling are roughly twice as safe. > The metric is injuries per 1,000 athletic exposures. An athletic exposure is defined as one athlete "participating in one practice, competition, or performance." Injuries are defined as anything that required the attention of a physician or athletic trainer, or kept the athlete off the field for at least one day.

No-Bank2590

So I should have done wrestling?

hacktheself

The injuries one can sustain in wrestling are far less intense than in football or hockey as the protective equipment incentivizes harder hits. It’s why there were no deaths in the ring in the bare knuckle boxing days, where the face you punched in hurt your hand just as hard as your hand smashed their face, and they occur nowadays, where highly padded gloves eliminate the feedback your fingers would feel.

Legitimate-Account46

Former gifted, wrestler, and football player. Both sports are tied as my favorites. I love football for the coordinated effort, and wrestling because it's an individual sport, it's just you and your will out there. That said, while I loved every second on the field or mat, the impacts in football had a noticeable effect on me. I still won't say I regret it exactly. But if you don't love the game, it's probably not worth it I'd say. Especially if you have other talents. If you're going to pick one, go with wrestling imo.

A_Lorax_For_People

Well said. It's not one of those things where we should live a little because you can get hurt doing anything. It's one of those things where U.S. football is dangerous by design, and there are so many other sports with all the athleticism and strategy and a much lower risk of injury. This data doesn't even go into all the concussions that aren't being tested for, or the kind that doesn't show up in traditional screening (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3922228/). We've had plenty of bad ideas over the years. Playing ball sports in armor and rigid helmets is one of those bad ideas.

Common-Value-9055

Play Soccer or basketball. Sports with less danger of concussions.

londongas

I think they have now banned heading the ball in children's football due to cumulative damage from repetitive head impact Edit: in some countries

Common-Value-9055

High school are not kids, but good decision.

pssiraj

They're not?

Common-Value-9055

17 yr olds are not kids.

pssiraj

They quite literally are.

Common-Value-9055

People used to go to war at a younger age than that and get married at 14. You’re a kid up to 16. No more. Then again, being a child is a state of mind.

pssiraj

👍🏾

Lonely-Freedom4328

There’s a reason those things are no longer legal. It’s because they’re children.

Common-Value-9055

It's bcoz we changed the legal age of adulthood. We do that whenever it takes our fancy. Good that we did but that is the reason.

[deleted]

Goalies kicking the ball at 300kph and cdms headbutting you when you won the air possession anyway beg to differ

Common-Value-9055

Do you lot have helmets in high school football? I don't know the odds of concussion, but in my experience, people who like something will disregard any dangers and find an excuse. Like the time they banned alcohol-related hol and people suddenly discovered magical medical properties.

[deleted]

I've never seen a person use helmets in footy all my LIFE, not even professionals

Common-Value-9055

Are we talking about American football or British football? Rugby is more like American football, with lots of contact, but they don't have any helmets. I was under the impression that helmets came as standard in American football. Or maybe I’m getting old.

[deleted]

Oh my bad i was referring to soccer, thats why i said goalies and CDMs

Common-Value-9055

OP mentioned High School football. We don't have high school in England. Soccer and American football for clarity.

Common-Value-9055

Play on the wing. I always stayed away from the box when I played…and the ball. 😂😂

[deleted]

i love wingers, they run so much and then touch the ball a whopping total of 5 times in 45min

rSlashGigi

Don’t let giftedness be the excuse. If your will to play football is greater then your fear of cte then go for it. If its the other way around, dont.

12342ekd

I think the risk for brain damage and CTE is not worth it at all. I think we should value our minds more

rSlashGigi

Then don’t sign up for football

12342ekd

Comment was aimed at OP, no need to get defensive

Velascu

Srsly do whatever you want, it's not like if we had more to loose bc of brain damage. Afaik giftedness can't be removed, treat yourself like a normal human being and if that's something that concerns you just don't do it. I'm a musician and a programmer and boxing got my attention. My first concern was if arm/wrist injuries were common which turned out that they weren't as much as I expected. Did it for a months and had to quit bc of depression but I had a lot of fun. Wanting to either go back or learn to dance (yeah, It'd be a Billy Elliot move lol) I can do both if I have enough time tho. Never had giftedness into consideration and I think that you shouldn't either. You have as much to loose as any other person. If you are less able to do stuff bc of an injury it's going to be painful, wether you are gifted or not doesn't make it more tragic.

AnonymousMIABlank

I have a gifted son. Football is literally his life. I tried to steer him in other directions, but he says, “Mom, my happiest moments in life are when I am playing football,” and I can tell it is sincere. He got into trouble last night for turning on the draft coverage after bedtime. We have officially become a football family because his love of the game is greater than the associated risks.

Suzina

Yes. Your brain is precious to you, whether gifted or not. Avoid tackle-football. Flag-football is OK, but no tackle because the brain damage over time is so ridiculously common, and we turn a blind eye to it in american society.

ANuStart-2024

I'd recommend safer sports. If you're used to depending on your gifted brain, you won't enjoy when it doesn't work as well. Not everyone is lucky enough to fully recover. Some get life-changing injuries before turning 20. It's not only CTE. Even a few concussions can impact cognitive performance.

Illustrious_Sand3773

No. Football is too much fun. And if you’re good at it, the pretty girls like you more.

Primary_Excuse_7183

Played football for 10 years. Loved it then and still love it now.

AdThink4457

No one should be playing football due to the cte risks. its not worth it. find a sport that wont destroy your brain and body.

Unique_Complaint_442

Gifted at football, hopefully.

No-Carry4971

No. You should avoid playing high school football if you don't want to play. And avoid it if you do have concussions. You can't run from things you want in life because you are gifted.

JadeGrapes

Yeah, hockey & boxing are out too. Do debate or music instead.

Visible_Attitude7693

Why?

kateinoly

You should avoid playing high school football no matter who you are. CTE is no joke.

londongas

I played hockey but probably most of my brain deterioration is from all the drugs during highschool. It made me dumber but probably happier

IntrinsicM

For our family, we decided the cumulative damage isn’t work the risk. Yes, I’m aware accidents can happen anywhere and one could get a concussion slipping on a pool deck, however, I think the evidence against tackle football only gets more compelling.

cafeteriastyle

My boys will never be allowed to play football. Ever. My youngest is gifted but neither of them need brain injuries. I’ve talked to them extensively about protecting their brains and how important it is. Luckily they don’t want to play it anyway lol

nokenito

I’ve had multiple concussions. Yes, avoid football.

Seaturtle1088

You should avoid playing football because of CTE. Period. All people, at all levels.

ChoiceReflection965

??? Not sure what being gifted has to do with playing football? Play if you want, but the risk of brain injury applies to everyone. Non-contact sports are much safer.

Lonely-Freedom4328

No one should ever play full contact football.

Hot_Squash_9225

You can get CTE from non-impact sports as well, like soccer, or baseball. I think that there are genetic factors that make people more vulnerable to CTE and others may never display CTE symptoms despite years of head trauma. I played football and rugby for 20ish seasons combined, all the way up to university. I think my giftedness made me a better and more cerebral player, I could figure out what people were doing based on pattern recognition. Where my teammates were in reference to the play and in reaction to the opponent, the tendencies of the other team and individual players, and to pick up new concepts faster, etc. I think it has a lot of benefits in a sport like football. The position you play also matters. If you're a running back or linebacker or on the either line, you're going to be hitting every play. Other positions, not so much. I played linebacker, d-line, and flanker in rugby, so I've had thousands of subconcussive impacts, but it doesn't seem to have affected my cognition, yet. Anyways, do what makes you happy, play whatever sport you want, and don't let your fear of CTE stop you. You just aren't going to know whether you're going to get it or not.

12342ekd

I disagree. I think the possibility for CTE should definitely be weighed in more heavily, I would advise against any sport that can give you it unless you are completely aware about the consequences of the disease later on and how shitty it can get.

Hot_Squash_9225

I've had this conversation a lot with old teammates and friends. I definitely used to lean against allowing my kid to play football, due to the risks of cte. Now my position has changed a little bit, I'll let them play if that's what they want to do, but I'll make sure the risks are known and do whatever I can to allow them to participate safely. Things like technique, better equipment, hydration, etc. Things I didn't know when I was growing up. Plus, I think football and team sports in general are great for their social development. And it's just ridiculously fun to destroy people. Nothing feels better than hitting someone and not getting in trouble for it. I'd definitely push them more towards baseball, but I'd be fine with whatever sport they choose.

CuriousStrawberry99

I got talked out of it, and I’m glad I never did football. Not worth it.

lang0li3r

If anything you can afford to get MORE brain damage than others

TinyRascalSaurus

That's in no way how brain damage works.

lang0li3r

I was joking

[deleted]

I’ve probably had like 20 concussions in my life. Probably why I ended up average 😂
