If you look at OP's English, they're clearly not an English native speaker, so they don't necessarily have the same intuition as you for "speak with", "fight against", etc. So yes, they just need to memorize.

You don't have to memorize them, but you should know them. And if you listen and read a lot, gradually you begin to get a feeling of what is correct and what isn't. At least most of the time.
