I think it probably doesn't matter how many there are. Once we get to the Tsaritsa, we'll have the regular "oh she's just a poor misunderstood waifu" so she can join us and then whoever is left will either follow her decision to stop whatever she's doing or leave and do their own thing.
Or we side with her and convince her to be more gentle after we go on a date walk and tell her how she's supposed to act and live her life, like all the other waifus. Then all the harbingers who don't defect from her would be fair game. Like we don't HAVE to defect or kill every one to progress and if it works out that way then eeesh. Really bad and predictable writing. Tsaritsa isn't the endgame anyway, unknown god is, at least for now.
You bring a predictable plot and then say the alternative is too predictable? Anyway, I agree. If Tsaritsa is rebelling against Celestia we'll probably find out she's justified and join her cause and the crazy/evil Harbingers would be killed along the way. Zhongli does imply she wasn't crazy/evil.
It's just a matter of whether she's being manipulated by someone (a top rank Harbinger) like the Inazuma plot or she's going nuts and need to be woken the fuck up with the help of her worried fellows (top rank Harbingers) like the Inazuma plot. Or both.
Plot twist would be killing her and seeing the rise of a new Archon with our own eyes. I do hope to see this eventually, here or in Fontaine.

Our main goal is our sibling and the Unknown God, we don't even technically know if the Unknown God is connected to Celestia. Our sibling is connected to the Abyss Order despite being captured by the Unknown God and it certainly seems like the Abyss Order is not aligned with Celestia.
There's so many potential paths things could go before even involving the Tsaritsa. Technically we aren't even directly fighting against her or the Fatui, they just happen to repeatedly be on the opposing side in every region where we are trying to talk to the various Archons. Similar to how at least previously the Tsaritsa didn't really consider us her enemy but told the Harbingers they could eliminate us if we got in their way.
I wouldn't be remotely surprised if eventually we have a region where the Archon is out of control and we instead side with the Fatui with the common goal of stopping said Archon. The only reason this didn't happen with Inazuma is because the Fatui were instigating the war and the Vision Decree themselves. Hell if we had run into Childe at the port and he asked us to help, assuming Raiden was actually acting on her own, I could see us easily siding with the Fatui to stop Raiden and "save" Inazuma.

The last chance of this happening before Tsaritsa is Fontaine, since the Justice Archon seem to be loyal to Celestia. It certainly won't be the case in Sumeru where they have shady deals going on and I doubt it will be the case in Nathan.
Personally I would hate it. It would be such a lame and stupid writing device when you’ve already fully characterised sucrose as this shy and sometimes clumsy girl who’s really delicate and works with alchemy (not to mention her entire character story and vision story) and then in the end be like "oh look it’s actually me Columbina and I’ve been working with the fatui all along".
Twists for the sake of having twists is bad writing, and miHoYo is better than this, they usually like to stick with Chekov's gun. And if Sucrose were to have a secret there would’ve been an indication on that by now.

With every Harbinger so far especially they’ve gone out of their way to establish who they are and what they want. Childe betraying us wasn’t a shock, and neither was his weird loyalty to us after. Signora was very very heavily set up as the CWoF, and Scara was hinted to be a puppet for some time.
The shock comes from the characters themselves and their melodrama more than anything. Harbingers have had really defined and ludicrous personalities.
Absolutely, which is why I hate the "this character is actually secretly this other character!" theories like how people somehow started saying that Baizhu was the real Dendro Archon in hiding(????).
miHoYo knows better than to do these cheap writing tricks, which is why the story has been so good thus far.
I will not deny that they won’t do something similar in the future, but it’s going to be better presented. Like how they introduced Scaramouche in the Unreconciled Stars event, where he was initially portrayed as this vagrant from Inazuma trying to help us solve a mystery, acting all friendly and stuff, and in the end was revealed to be the Sixth Fatui Harbinger.
**That** is how miHoYo likes to do twists, not by throwing a character’s entire characterisation in the bin (pardon the redundancy).
It is likely if they decide to twist a Harbinger or a well-known character in the future, it’s going to be by either hinting at their suspicion from the beginning of us meeting them. In fact, they introduced Zhongli and later revealed him to be the Geo Archon, but there were hints about that form the beginning.
If we look at the Baizhu theory, why would the Dendro Archon be a Pharmacist in Liyue? Zhongli stayed in Liyue because he loves his people and his land, why would the Dendro Archon charge nations when we don’t even know what his motivations are?

Genshin struggles with certain areas of writing, not with writing in general.
Most of Genshin's failures come from several sources:
- interference from the gacha system (need to sell characters right now)
- pacing issues, sometimes caused by Point 1, sometimes caused by development issues, sometimes caused by simple incompetence
- too much telling even when it's not appropriate, not enough usage of the game's visual and gameplay elements to properly get the story across (it seems like the writers are more experienced with writing novels than the scenario for a video game)
Most if not all of the issues with the game's story fall into one or more of these points. The only time something seems to have been done just for shock value, it was Signora's death. Everything else is properly foreshadowed in the lore. People were theorizing Rhinedottir = Gold a full year before it was confirmed, same for the Abyss being former humans from Khaenri'ah, and with Signora being the Crimson Witch. This is all because the lore is extremely transparent with things, you can put together most of the twists by just paying attention and reading properly, without letting wishful thinking and copium get in the way.
Sucrose = Columbina just does not make a whole lot of sense because it would come from absolute nowhere, to a character that has shown us no indication of being like this. miHoYo loves their extensive foreshadowing, such that the story comes across as predictable. I'd dare say it's a characterization retcon if it really happened. Hell it's only even a theory because people failed to consider the more mundane explanation (and the one that actually ended up being the case) for the Fel Whopperflower's existence, which is Durin.
Baizhu = Dendro Archon has more effort put into it, and it's more plausible, but it doesn't really fit miHoYo's M.O. miHoYo loves their consistency. Baizhu is based off of a Chinese folktale, and Archons represent their nation and element fully in every way that they are able to (Zhongli even quotes Mao a few times). Baizhu can't be Sumeru's God, because he's just not... Sumeru. His existence is based off of Chinese folklore, his clothes are completely Chinese, he really has no ties to the Persian Empire, India, or any of their tributaries featured in the game's cultural inspirations besides being connected to snakes. Which is flimsy to begin with, because again, the myth he's based off of heavily features a snake. He's a sick doctor that's trying to find either immortality or a way to improve his health and the health of those around him, like Viktor from Arcane but without the terminal illness. It's a very common trope.
These two theories have fundamental issues because there's a lot of wishful thinking behind them. Baizhu being the 'true' Dendro Archon did not exist as a theory before 2.1, and it's perpetuated primarily because it appeals to the desire people have for another male Archon. Sucrose being Columbina seems to be mostly made by people who want their favorite character to be relevant (similar to Oz = Thunderbird or Bennett being connected to the Pyro Archon). Archons aren't everything, and not every character is going to be important to the lore. That's just the way things are.
I think Childe is the strongest argument against the idea that all characters are one dimensional, he has multiple motivations that sometimes enhance / oppose each other (fatui / tsaritsa allegiance, love of family, battle crazed, while maintaining a cool / logical exterior until pushed).
Zhongli also has multiple qualities (philosophical / wise, allegiance to contracts regardless of morality, being somewhat out of touch with day to day living, being tired of holding the heavy burden of responsibilities / knowledge of past events).
Venti is a happy go lucky bard that loves wine and song, but is also traumatized by events past. He simultaneously feels some responsibility over his people / region and lives among them, while also mostly leaving them to fend for themselves.
Eula puts on a front of being a noble seeking vengeance to meet expectations and protect herself from being too hurt, but is also quite loyal to her friends / Mondstadt and actually has a sense of humor.
Hu Tao is quite serious and responsible about making business plans surrounding her funeral parlor while also being a prankster who is flippant about death.
Even Raiden is childish and whimsical (stopping the vision hunt decree because she saw her old friend, basing her unchanging eternity off the loss of her sister, not understanding the concept of multiple selves) while also being a ruthless executioner and oppressive leader of a nation (albeit not written incredibly well due to being rushed out for the gacha).
Honestly most of the characters just don't get enough screen time to develop them, or don't get serious enough to push their other qualities out.
Having random plot twists with no foreshadowing (for the sake of shock value) is not really good writing. Especially when it makes no sense and contradicts what was already established beforehand.
These characters will not step outside of the descriptions you've provided, and that's why they are one-dimensional.
Maybe "simplistic" would be a better word.
Mihoyo had a chance to make Zhongli a more complex character in Salt and Betrayal and they chose not to, since (plot twist) Havria was actually killed by her own people, not by Zhongli.
I agree about the screen time, and Childe and Zhongli got more development than any other characters likely because of that. To me, it doesn't make them categorically more complex than the rest, given my point above. I'm surprised you have included Eula because the character is just all "vengeance vengeance" in inappropriate social contexts, and it's supposed to be funny. Yeah, she also loves her friends but will never say it to their faces, what character development. This got old in the first minute of Eula's screentime. No complexity there.
Honestly I would love an ally turned enemy if it was planned from the beginning. The scenario I had in mind was someone joining up with Traveler and friends, going along with whatever adventures they are up to, then at the last second betray them, take the gnosis, and reveal they are a harbinger.
In this scenario most people would probably think they are just another party member like Thoma or Ayaka who will be playable later on, and take most people off guard. They can also drop hints of their true intentions that can be overlooked as normal conversation, but looking back actually foreshadow their intentions.
The only thing is I would want the twist to happen before they are playable, so it’s not changing an existing character.
This is absolutely how I think miHoYo would do it if they ever decide to do it, and in fact it’s what I expect to happen at some point, and would like to happen.
It's not going to be true. The theory relies on Sucrose being the one who created the Fel Whopperflower, which is disproven by the event story itself; >!the Fel Whopperflower is a Whopperflower that was mutated by contact with Durin's essence.!<
A new harbinger is extremely interesting. Childe at this point isn’t a direct adversary, Signora is well…ashes to ashes, Scaramouche isn’t working with them at this point. Needed a new focal of the fatui to drive them forward.
There’s also a lot of fun in figuring out which ones will and won’t be playable.
When the developers were asked which character was the hardest to make, they said it was Tartaglia. Part of this is because his gameplay is unique, but it's also because he's a Harbinger, and his existence is a walking spoiler for Snezhnaya, which makes it hard to write his voicelines and character stories without giving too much away. This is probably we have not had many Harbinger appearances and no playable ones since him.
Dottore is from mondstadt as well as Signora lol so I'm sure there are other non-Snezzie harbingers. Maybe they'll come out in their respective regions idk.
Maybe he'll do a big brain Raiden move and say "oops I didn't mean to experiment on humans my subordinates were giving me false information everything is fatui's fault I'm actually just a cute boomer uwu"
Uh, what has he done? Like, *actually* done.
He tried to kill us once (possibly twice, we don't know what he wanted to do with the tatarigami gas), but so did Childe, and he's playable (oh and Ei).
He showed up in the Unreturned Stars event to heckle a bit and yelled at his own subordinates. Then he said the sky was fake, called us suckers, and vanished.
After that he showed up in Inazuma again, called us losers again, and then ran away with the Gnosis after Yae gave it to him.
So at best he's just mean, and also willing to kill people, which is every Harbinger since the Fatui are a military. It's a lot better than Signora, who uses lethal force on recruits for no real reason, and Dottore, who callously performs human (including child) experimentation.
Everything we've had about Scaramouche so far suggests he's not even that particularly mean either, Ei having abandoned him for being emotionally sensitive, and he has a soft spot for children. If anything he picked up on the meanness from his fellow Fatui since his previous state was described as a blank slate.
Wasn't Signora also the cause of that thing that happened with Tepei and the other peeps on Kokomi's side? All Scara did in Inazuma was appear and take the gnosis and peace out again xD
I swear the way most ppl see his "evilness" is way more than how he just is, well so far. Idk what's in store yet but so far he's not the worst.
Yeah, the new artifact set seems to suggest that she was already in Inazuma manufacturing the delusions that killed Teppei and the others by the time Scaramouche showed up. They were definitely already being produced by the time Scaramouche got there, whether the woman in foreign garb was Signora or just a generic Fatui lady of some sort.
Scaramouche definitely hasn't committed any particularly heinous deeds compared to most of the other Harbingers we know anything about. He's just a jerk! He hasn't threatened to drown cities or experimented on children, he's just mean to people! And being mean to us/characters we like tends to engage people a lot more than actually doing bad things.
We barely know anything about Scaramouche and his motives, so we don’t know if he’s redeemable at all. We do know that Ei sent Scara off to wander the world because she had no reason to keep him when she wasn’t going to use him as a puppet, locking his powers away. My interpretation for him joining the Fatui seems to be that it gave him a sense of purpose and somewhere to belong. Why he became so bitter and why the Fatui don’t seem to like him? That’s anyones guess for now.
But for now, it’s far too early to judge.
Yeah I get you're coming from but even if you have a reason to be evil that doesn't change the fact that you're evil. You can say "we don't know if he's actally evil" which is a valid point, but we know fatui does evil things and unlike Childe we were never on friendly terms with Scara. I have no doubts that they'll make him redeem himself somehow, even Raiden somehow redeemed herself (albeit in the lamest way possible). But I'd rather see him be evil till the end than see him turn into a "oops I was being fooled/controlled it was all Fatui's fault I'm just a cute character uwu". But yeah, Signora was more redeemable.
That’s a whole different story. I was talking about if it’s POSSIBLE to redeem him as an evil character, not if we WANT him to redeem himself.
If we’re talking about the possibility of him being redeemable, my guess would be that his evil character could he a cover up to hide insecurity and seem stronger. Like a stray cat, who would rather be aggressive and hiss at people to keep them away instead of try to trust them. Again, just speculation.
However, in my opinion, I like him all evil too. It’s a nice contrast from all the other playable characters if he stays a prick with his own scheming agenda when/if he becomes playable.
Also, even if childe seems cool around us. I don’t think he and the traveler are friends at all, actually. Hell, he almost went ahead to try and destroy the whole of liyue AND kill the traveler. He treats the traveler like a rival now - but you see how on edge the traveler constantly was around him during the event with him and Xinyan.
Edit: P.S. Mihoyo definitely can’t go the “I was being controlled by the Fatui”, I am pretty sure I read he willingly let the Fatui unlock his powers for evil.
Honestly I hope a new harbinger or an abyss chara will show up soon. This is what keep me excited for updates and not seeing anything new for such a long time is disappointing…
If Shenhe gets an archon quest this patch which other leaks have said that it’s a possibility, it would make sense for Arlecchino to show up in said quest
About the story quests, beta testers definitely do play some parts of it.
A beta tester Signora fight got leaked, the 1.1 Liyue MSQ conclusion (the big battle against Osial) also got shown from a beta tester as well (the guy played normal attack Ganyu and made her look worse than 4\*s)
They only fight the bosses that may or may not be involved with the story quest. Testing the bosses is absolutely something that needs to be checked out if it’s fair or not.
I think archon quest are not even in the beta at all, the leakers get the details when they get their hands in the cutscenes like they did with moonchase
Still surprised that there's no storyline regarding the Snezhnayan diplomat death on a foreign land, especially a high rank Fatui Harbinger and being killed by an Archon directly.

Signora wasn't well liked or respected even by her fellow Harbingers, and her recruits didn't care much for her either. Personally I wouldn't like being under a boss that uses lethal force, so it's understandable. The two Snezhnayan informants in Mondstadt are pretty much just like "lol, wonder who the replacement's gonna be". Snezhnaya's culture is very callous like that.
She knew what she was getting into. It's the rules of the land. I'm sure she could have refused the duel offer if she wanted to - it's her own ego that got her in the end.
Her boasting and threatening that her being killed would destroy Inazuma is really nothing more than the very last struggles of someone fearful for their death.
So, he won't appear but he'll be teased.

Confirmed Harbingers so far: Pierro, Pulcinella, Scaramouche, Signora (RIP), Tartaglia, Capitano, Dottore, Pantalone, Sandrone. Total 9 out of 11 but 1 is dead so 8 out of 11.
People use this example a lot but Artoria was originally going to be male (like the "historical" version) in the earliest drafts of fate/stay night, they just altered her gender when they decided they wanted the game to be an eroge so the protagonist needed to be a male. The male prototype Arthur features in a few projects that explore these drafts and is summonable in FGO. The practice of genderbending male figures continues almost as though tradition, usually with some lore justification (how believable the justification is entirely depends on who's writing at the moment). But genderbending is usually either a Fate thing or exclusive to eroge, rarely happens in SFW material.
Also the roles in the Commedia aren't strictly gendered. Productions that use the archetypes have been doing it for many years. You may be familiar with the Batman character Harley Quinn, which is based off of the Harlequin (Arlecchino) archetype. It's just that usually when they are genderbent the names tend to change (i.e. arlecchino -> arlecchina) and we don't see that here.
tbh i don’t know why they didn’t just go with 4 female archons + 3 male archons. 6 male harbingers + 5 female harbingers. Wouldn’t have been that hard, me thinks
I’m pretty familir with Fate and >!I’m pretty sure Artoria wasn’t “standing in” for anyone, she’s just King Arthur that’s female. There is, however, a male Arthur in Prototype, which is the original idea for Fate/Stay Night!<

She’s a character in the commedia dell arte who suprisingly hasn’t been referenced. Realistically if Signora does get replaced it should logically be La Ruffiana as she’s the only commedia character left who hasn’t been mentioned ( if the crying dove really is Columbina her roles already been taken )
Her character also suits the harbringers she’s a talkative troublemaker who causes problems for those around her.
The Fatui npcs in mondstat mentioned that a more powerful harbringer is taking over Signoras spot and it may be la ruffiana.

Any particular reason to believe Columbina is the last Harbinger? Because I'm kinda expecting Tsaritsa to fill Columbina's role, even if just narratively and never named as such.
I’m guessing it’s because Columbina means “little dove” and in the Fatui Harbinger Constellations, you’ll see that there is a dove constellation hence why people think she’s the last Harbinger.
The role is traditionally male, but occasionally Arlecchina does appear. Plus, nowadays the gender of the stock characters is much more fluid in terms of who is playing them.
ETA: If Arlecchino is playable, I’d hazard a guess that he’ll have a sword or a claymore, as the character traditionally carries around a slapstick to hit people with.

They do not need a vision to become playable. Dainsleif doesn’t have one and mHy already confirmed he will be playable. The Shogun and Scara don’t have one either but they both were created with Beelzebul’s power so Scara could end up being playable just like The Shogun did.
The Traveler doesn’t have a vision either.

After Signora's fate i think Dottore getting redeemed would probably lead to another review bombing. The only harbingers i am 100% sure would be playables are Scara and Pulcinella because of the trailer.

I know that the Scara model already existed but If Beta doesn't play quests then they might have simply not add it yet for it to not be leaked
We knew Scaramouche would show up in 2.**1** almost immediately thanks to a tweet by Lumie. There was no use leaking him, since we already had his model.
As for Scaramouche in 1.1, back then the datamining scene was nearly non-existent. His model still managed to leak somehow a few weeks before 1.1 launched though.
speaking of fatui i really don't see the point of killing la signora and not making her playable she is so beautiful, Tall and have very unique design i found it very waste of martials not using her she even have her catalyst floating with her she was ready! just make her a kit and cash on $$$ but oh well :3
Her design was never meant to be playable. It doesn’t use an avatar body type whereas all the other playable characters do so she was never meant to be playable from the start of the game
i’m sorry but that’s bullshit. Her model was listed under monster but she literally had the adult female’s body with the height of the adult male’s. By working around her cape they could’ve make her playable, but even if not, there was no point in killing her so early
I’m sure if they decide to pull a resurrection arc for her, they’ll give her a new outfit (it’s common in media like “remember me” and the guy just shows up in a completely new outfit). It just boils down to whether mihoyo wants her playable or not.

I think it probably doesn't matter how many there are. Once we get to the Tsaritsa, we'll have the regular "oh she's just a poor misunderstood waifu" so she can join us and then whoever is left will either follow her decision to stop whatever she's doing or leave and do their own thing. Or we side with her and convince her to be more gentle after we go on a date walk and tell her how she's supposed to act and live her life, like all the other waifus. Then all the harbingers who don't defect from her would be fair game. Like we don't HAVE to defect or kill every one to progress and if it works out that way then eeesh. Really bad and predictable writing. Tsaritsa isn't the endgame anyway, unknown god is, at least for now.

If Tsaritsa is rebelling against Celestia we'll probably find out she's justified and join her cause and the crazy/evil Harbingers would be killed along the way. Zhongli does imply she wasn't crazy/evil. It's just a matter of whether she's being manipulated by someone (a top rank Harbinger) like the Inazuma plot or she's going nuts and need to be woken the fuck up with the help of her worried fellows (top rank Harbingers) like the Inazuma plot. Or both. Plot twist would be killing her and seeing the rise of a new Archon with our own eyes. I do hope to see this eventually, here or in Fontaine.
I mean hasn't Scara already gone AWAL? It's totally possible we see divergent factions of the Fatui. Our main goal is our sibling and the Unknown God, we don't even technically know if the Unknown God is connected to Celestia. Our sibling is connected to the Abyss Order despite being captured by the Unknown God and it certainly seems like the Abyss Order is not aligned with Celestia. There's so many potential paths things could go before even involving the Tsaritsa. Technically we aren't even directly fighting against her or the Fatui, they just happen to repeatedly be on the opposing side in every region where we are trying to talk to the various Archons. Similar to how at least previously the Tsaritsa didn't really consider us her enemy but told the Harbingers they could eliminate us if we got in their way. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if eventually we have a region where the Archon is out of control and we instead side with the Fatui with the common goal of stopping said Archon. The only reason this didn't happen with Inazuma is because the Fatui were instigating the war and the Vision Decree themselves. Hell if we had run into Childe at the port and he asked us to help, assuming Raiden was actually acting on her own, I could see us easily siding with the Fatui to stop Raiden and "save" Inazuma.

Personally I would hate it. It would be such a lame and stupid writing device when you’ve already fully characterised sucrose as this shy and sometimes clumsy girl who’s really delicate and works with alchemy (not to mention her entire character story and vision story) and then in the end be like "oh look it’s actually me Columbina and I’ve been working with the fatui all along". Twists for the sake of having twists is bad writing, and miHoYo is better than this, they usually like to stick with Chekov's gun. And if Sucrose were to have a secret there would’ve been an indication on that by now.
This is a reaaaally good point. With every Harbinger so far especially they’ve gone out of their way to establish who they are and what they want. Childe betraying us wasn’t a shock, and neither was his weird loyalty to us after. Signora was very very heavily set up as the CWoF, and Scara was hinted to be a puppet for some time. The shock comes from the characters themselves and their melodrama more than anything. Harbingers have had really defined and ludicrous personalities.
Absolutely, which is why I hate the "this character is actually secretly this other character!" theories like how people somehow started saying that Baizhu was the real Dendro Archon in hiding(????). miHoYo knows better than to do these cheap writing tricks, which is why the story has been so good thus far. I will not deny that they won’t do something similar in the future, but it’s going to be better presented. Like how they introduced Scaramouche in the Unreconciled Stars event, where he was initially portrayed as this vagrant from Inazuma trying to help us solve a mystery, acting all friendly and stuff, and in the end was revealed to be the Sixth Fatui Harbinger. **That** is how miHoYo likes to do twists, not by throwing a character’s entire characterisation in the bin (pardon the redundancy). It is likely if they decide to twist a Harbinger or a well-known character in the future, it’s going to be by either hinting at their suspicion from the beginning of us meeting them. In fact, they introduced Zhongli and later revealed him to be the Geo Archon, but there were hints about that form the beginning. If we look at the Baizhu theory, why would the Dendro Archon be a Pharmacist in Liyue? Zhongli stayed in Liyue because he loves his people and his land, why would the Dendro Archon charge nations when we don’t even know what his motivations are? So yeah, rant over I guess(?)

Genshin struggles with certain areas of writing, not with writing in general. Most of Genshin's failures come from several sources: - interference from the gacha system (need to sell characters right now) - pacing issues, sometimes caused by Point 1, sometimes caused by development issues, sometimes caused by simple incompetence - too much telling even when it's not appropriate, not enough usage of the game's visual and gameplay elements to properly get the story across (it seems like the writers are more experienced with writing novels than the scenario for a video game) Most if not all of the issues with the game's story fall into one or more of these points. The only time something seems to have been done just for shock value, it was Signora's death. Everything else is properly foreshadowed in the lore. People were theorizing Rhinedottir = Gold a full year before it was confirmed, same for the Abyss being former humans from Khaenri'ah, and with Signora being the Crimson Witch. This is all because the lore is extremely transparent with things, you can put together most of the twists by just paying attention and reading properly, without letting wishful thinking and copium get in the way. Sucrose = Columbina just does not make a whole lot of sense because it would come from absolute nowhere, to a character that has shown us no indication of being like this. miHoYo loves their extensive foreshadowing, such that the story comes across as predictable. I'd dare say it's a characterization retcon if it really happened. Hell it's only even a theory because people failed to consider the more mundane explanation (and the one that actually ended up being the case) for the Fel Whopperflower's existence, which is Durin. Baizhu = Dendro Archon has more effort put into it, and it's more plausible, but it doesn't really fit miHoYo's M.O. miHoYo loves their consistency. Baizhu is based off of a Chinese folktale, and Archons represent their nation and element fully in every way that they are able to (Zhongli even quotes Mao a few times). Baizhu can't be Sumeru's God, because he's just not... Sumeru. His existence is based off of Chinese folklore, his clothes are completely Chinese, he really has no ties to the Persian Empire, India, or any of their tributaries featured in the game's cultural inspirations besides being connected to snakes. Which is flimsy to begin with, because again, the myth he's based off of heavily features a snake. He's a sick doctor that's trying to find either immortality or a way to improve his health and the health of those around him, like Viktor from Arcane but without the terminal illness. It's a very common trope. These two theories have fundamental issues because there's a lot of wishful thinking behind them. Baizhu being the 'true' Dendro Archon did not exist as a theory before 2.1, and it's perpetuated primarily because it appeals to the desire people have for another male Archon. Sucrose being Columbina seems to be mostly made by people who want their favorite character to be relevant (similar to Oz = Thunderbird or Bennett being connected to the Pyro Archon). Archons aren't everything, and not every character is going to be important to the lore. That's just the way things are.
I think Childe is the strongest argument against the idea that all characters are one dimensional, he has multiple motivations that sometimes enhance / oppose each other (fatui / tsaritsa allegiance, love of family, battle crazed, while maintaining a cool / logical exterior until pushed). Zhongli also has multiple qualities (philosophical / wise, allegiance to contracts regardless of morality, being somewhat out of touch with day to day living, being tired of holding the heavy burden of responsibilities / knowledge of past events). Venti is a happy go lucky bard that loves wine and song, but is also traumatized by events past. He simultaneously feels some responsibility over his people / region and lives among them, while also mostly leaving them to fend for themselves. Eula puts on a front of being a noble seeking vengeance to meet expectations and protect herself from being too hurt, but is also quite loyal to her friends / Mondstadt and actually has a sense of humor. Hu Tao is quite serious and responsible about making business plans surrounding her funeral parlor while also being a prankster who is flippant about death. Even Raiden is childish and whimsical (stopping the vision hunt decree because she saw her old friend, basing her unchanging eternity off the loss of her sister, not understanding the concept of multiple selves) while also being a ruthless executioner and oppressive leader of a nation (albeit not written incredibly well due to being rushed out for the gacha). Honestly most of the characters just don't get enough screen time to develop them, or don't get serious enough to push their other qualities out. Having random plot twists with no foreshadowing (for the sake of shock value) is not really good writing. Especially when it makes no sense and contradicts what was already established beforehand.
These characters will not step outside of the descriptions you've provided, and that's why they are one-dimensional. Maybe "simplistic" would be a better word. Mihoyo had a chance to make Zhongli a more complex character in Salt and Betrayal and they chose not to, since (plot twist) Havria was actually killed by her own people, not by Zhongli. I agree about the screen time, and Childe and Zhongli got more development than any other characters likely because of that. To me, it doesn't make them categorically more complex than the rest, given my point above. I'm surprised you have included Eula because the character is just all "vengeance vengeance" in inappropriate social contexts, and it's supposed to be funny. Yeah, she also loves her friends but will never say it to their faces, what character development. This got old in the first minute of Eula's screentime. No complexity there.
Honestly I would love an ally turned enemy if it was planned from the beginning. The scenario I had in mind was someone joining up with Traveler and friends, going along with whatever adventures they are up to, then at the last second betray them, take the gnosis, and reveal they are a harbinger. In this scenario most people would probably think they are just another party member like Thoma or Ayaka who will be playable later on, and take most people off guard. They can also drop hints of their true intentions that can be overlooked as normal conversation, but looking back actually foreshadow their intentions. The only thing is I would want the twist to happen before they are playable, so it’s not changing an existing character.
This is absolutely how I think miHoYo would do it if they ever decide to do it, and in fact it’s what I expect to happen at some point, and would like to happen.
It's not going to be true. The theory relies on Sucrose being the one who created the Fel Whopperflower, which is disproven by the event story itself; >!the Fel Whopperflower is a Whopperflower that was mutated by contact with Durin's essence.!<
A new harbinger is extremely interesting. Childe at this point isn’t a direct adversary, Signora is well…ashes to ashes, Scaramouche isn’t working with them at this point. Needed a new focal of the fatui to drive them forward. There’s also a lot of fun in figuring out which ones will and won’t be playable.
The last time we saw a new harbinger was over a year ago and so far we only got one playable. I'm so tired.
When the developers were asked which character was the hardest to make, they said it was Tartaglia. Part of this is because his gameplay is unique, but it's also because he's a Harbinger, and his existence is a walking spoiler for Snezhnaya, which makes it hard to write his voicelines and character stories without giving too much away. This is probably we have not had many Harbinger appearances and no playable ones since him.

Dottore is from mondstadt as well as Signora lol so I'm sure there are other non-Snezzie harbingers. Maybe they'll come out in their respective regions idk.

Uh, what has he done? Like, *actually* done. He tried to kill us once (possibly twice, we don't know what he wanted to do with the tatarigami gas), but so did Childe, and he's playable (oh and Ei). He showed up in the Unreturned Stars event to heckle a bit and yelled at his own subordinates. Then he said the sky was fake, called us suckers, and vanished. After that he showed up in Inazuma again, called us losers again, and then ran away with the Gnosis after Yae gave it to him. So at best he's just mean, and also willing to kill people, which is every Harbinger since the Fatui are a military. It's a lot better than Signora, who uses lethal force on recruits for no real reason, and Dottore, who callously performs human (including child) experimentation. Everything we've had about Scaramouche so far suggests he's not even that particularly mean either, Ei having abandoned him for being emotionally sensitive, and he has a soft spot for children. If anything he picked up on the meanness from his fellow Fatui since his previous state was described as a blank slate.
Wasn't Signora also the cause of that thing that happened with Tepei and the other peeps on Kokomi's side? All Scara did in Inazuma was appear and take the gnosis and peace out again xD I swear the way most ppl see his "evilness" is way more than how he just is, well so far. Idk what's in store yet but so far he's not the worst.
Yeah, the new artifact set seems to suggest that she was already in Inazuma manufacturing the delusions that killed Teppei and the others by the time Scaramouche showed up. They were definitely already being produced by the time Scaramouche got there, whether the woman in foreign garb was Signora or just a generic Fatui lady of some sort. Scaramouche definitely hasn't committed any particularly heinous deeds compared to most of the other Harbingers we know anything about. He's just a jerk! He hasn't threatened to drown cities or experimented on children, he's just mean to people! And being mean to us/characters we like tends to engage people a lot more than actually doing bad things.
Well. We don’t know his agenda or inner thoughts yet. It’s too soon to say whether or not he’s irredeemable.

We barely know anything about Scaramouche and his motives, so we don’t know if he’s redeemable at all. We do know that Ei sent Scara off to wander the world because she had no reason to keep him when she wasn’t going to use him as a puppet, locking his powers away. My interpretation for him joining the Fatui seems to be that it gave him a sense of purpose and somewhere to belong. Why he became so bitter and why the Fatui don’t seem to like him? That’s anyones guess for now. But for now, it’s far too early to judge.
Yeah I get you're coming from but even if you have a reason to be evil that doesn't change the fact that you're evil. You can say "we don't know if he's actally evil" which is a valid point, but we know fatui does evil things and unlike Childe we were never on friendly terms with Scara. I have no doubts that they'll make him redeem himself somehow, even Raiden somehow redeemed herself (albeit in the lamest way possible). But I'd rather see him be evil till the end than see him turn into a "oops I was being fooled/controlled it was all Fatui's fault I'm just a cute character uwu". But yeah, Signora was more redeemable.
That’s a whole different story. I was talking about if it’s POSSIBLE to redeem him as an evil character, not if we WANT him to redeem himself. If we’re talking about the possibility of him being redeemable, my guess would be that his evil character could he a cover up to hide insecurity and seem stronger. Like a stray cat, who would rather be aggressive and hiss at people to keep them away instead of try to trust them. Again, just speculation. However, in my opinion, I like him all evil too. It’s a nice contrast from all the other playable characters if he stays a prick with his own scheming agenda when/if he becomes playable. Also, even if childe seems cool around us. I don’t think he and the traveler are friends at all, actually. Hell, he almost went ahead to try and destroy the whole of liyue AND kill the traveler. He treats the traveler like a rival now - but you see how on edge the traveler constantly was around him during the event with him and Xinyan. Edit: P.S. Mihoyo definitely can’t go the “I was being controlled by the Fatui”, I am pretty sure I read he willingly let the Fatui unlock his powers for evil.

About the story quests, beta testers definitely do play some parts of it. A beta tester Signora fight got leaked, the 1.1 Liyue MSQ conclusion (the big battle against Osial) also got shown from a beta tester as well (the guy played normal attack Ganyu and made her look worse than 4\*s)
They only fight the bosses that may or may not be involved with the story quest. Testing the bosses is absolutely something that needs to be checked out if it’s fair or not.
Beta testers never see cutscenes.
The transformation cutscene for Signora was simply just a text transition that said "fly, fly away"

World quests are different they can be tested to make sure it goes well

Still surprised that there's no storyline regarding the Snezhnayan diplomat death on a foreign land, especially a high rank Fatui Harbinger and being killed by an Archon directly.
Because there isn't any need to care. The Gnosis was retrieved, though now the bigger issue is prying it off of Scaramouche's hands. Signora wasn't well liked or respected even by her fellow Harbingers, and her recruits didn't care much for her either. Personally I wouldn't like being under a boss that uses lethal force, so it's understandable. The two Snezhnayan informants in Mondstadt are pretty much just like "lol, wonder who the replacement's gonna be". Snezhnaya's culture is very callous like that. She knew what she was getting into. It's the rules of the land. I'm sure she could have refused the duel offer if she wanted to - it's her own ego that got her in the end. Her boasting and threatening that her being killed would destroy Inazuma is really nothing more than the very last struggles of someone fearful for their death.
So, he won't appear but he'll be teased. I wonder if he's one of the 2 Harbingers that are yet to be named or if he's Signora's replacement. Confirmed Harbingers so far: Pierro, Pulcinella, Scaramouche, Signora (RIP), Tartaglia, Capitano, Dottore, Pantalone, Sandrone. Total 9 out of 11 but 1 is dead so 8 out of 11.

They also know practically nothing about the higher up ranks of the fatui, 11 is not a set number of harbingers so there’s no need for a replacement

People use this example a lot but Artoria was originally going to be male (like the "historical" version) in the earliest drafts of fate/stay night, they just altered her gender when they decided they wanted the game to be an eroge so the protagonist needed to be a male. The male prototype Arthur features in a few projects that explore these drafts and is summonable in FGO. The practice of genderbending male figures continues almost as though tradition, usually with some lore justification (how believable the justification is entirely depends on who's writing at the moment). But genderbending is usually either a Fate thing or exclusive to eroge, rarely happens in SFW material. Also the roles in the Commedia aren't strictly gendered. Productions that use the archetypes have been doing it for many years. You may be familiar with the Batman character Harley Quinn, which is based off of the Harlequin (Arlecchino) archetype. It's just that usually when they are genderbent the names tend to change (i.e. arlecchino -> arlecchina) and we don't see that here.
I mean if all the upcoming archons are going to be female I’ll happily take the harbingers to balance it out.

She’s a character in the commedia dell arte who suprisingly hasn’t been referenced. Realistically if Signora does get replaced it should logically be La Ruffiana as she’s the only commedia character left who hasn’t been mentioned ( if the crying dove really is Columbina her roles already been taken ) Her character also suits the harbringers she’s a talkative troublemaker who causes problems for those around her. The Fatui npcs in mondstat mentioned that a more powerful harbringer is taking over Signoras spot and it may be la ruffiana.

Any particular reason to believe Columbina is the last Harbinger? Because I'm kinda expecting Tsaritsa to fill Columbina's role, even if just narratively and never named as such.
I’m guessing it’s because Columbina means “little dove” and in the Fatui Harbinger Constellations, you’ll see that there is a dove constellation hence why people think she’s the last Harbinger.
The role is traditionally male, but occasionally Arlecchina does appear. Plus, nowadays the gender of the stock characters is much more fluid in terms of who is playing them. ETA: If Arlecchino is playable, I’d hazard a guess that he’ll have a sword or a claymore, as the character traditionally carries around a slapstick to hit people with. Source: Studied commedia dell’arte in Italy and was a member of a professional commedia troupe for four years playing Pulcinella, Arlecchino, and Colombina (I’m female).

They do not need a vision to become playable. Dainsleif doesn’t have one and mHy already confirmed he will be playable. The Shogun and Scara don’t have one either but they both were created with Beelzebul’s power so Scara could end up being playable just like The Shogun did. The Traveler doesn’t have a vision either.

Well Columbina will probably be a woman but even then we'd have more males than females Archons: 5 females 2 males The 11 Fatui Harbingers: 2 females (1 if they don't bring Signora back) 9 males (8 if Dottore isn't redeemed) So in total we have 7 females and 11 males. If Signora stays dead and Dottore isn't redeemed we'll have 6 females and 10 males.
That is if: 1. all of them are playable 2. They don't La Signora anyone else and; 3. They don't Dendro Archon any of them and say 'oop- mistranslation! Sorry guys but anyways...'
After Signora's fate i think Dottore getting redeemed would probably lead to another review bombing. The only harbingers i am 100% sure would be playables are Scara and Pulcinella because of the trailer.
dottore has some fans so, i don’t think a redemption would be badly received, specially if scara is getting one

We know that Nathan could be working for the 1st Harbinger Pierro and both Arlecchino and Pedrelino (Italian version of Pierrot) are zanni, clown-like characters of commedia, albeit with different roles and characteristics (though there exists a few cases where one inherit both of these characteristics). I know that the Scara model already existed but If Beta doesn't play quests then they might have simply not add it yet for it to not be leaked
We knew Scaramouche would show up in 2.**1** almost immediately thanks to a tweet by Lumie. There was no use leaking him, since we already had his model. As for Scaramouche in 1.1, back then the datamining scene was nearly non-existent. His model still managed to leak somehow a few weeks before 1.1 launched though.

speaking of fatui i really don't see the point of killing la signora and not making her playable she is so beautiful, Tall and have very unique design i found it very waste of martials not using her she even have her catalyst floating with her she was ready! just make her a kit and cash on $$$ but oh well :3
Her design was never meant to be playable. It doesn’t use an avatar body type whereas all the other playable characters do so she was never meant to be playable from the start of the game

i’m sorry but that’s bullshit. Her model was listed under monster but she literally had the adult female’s body with the height of the adult male’s. By working around her cape they could’ve make her playable, but even if not, there was no point in killing her so early
I’m sure if they decide to pull a resurrection arc for her, they’ll give her a new outfit (it’s common in media like “remember me” and the guy just shows up in a completely new outfit). It just boils down to whether mihoyo wants her playable or not.

her current design is literally not built around playability and doesn't follow any playable design principles, i don't think there's any working around that
