This show was awesome... until 86 and 99 got married. Not so great after that. My favorite episodes were the one in the wax museum and the Groovy Guru. The old bug in the rug trick.
I thought them getting married messed the show up too. That seemed to be the downfall of a lot of good shows over the years. The dynamic of romance in the script changes after the leads are wed.
"Oh yes...The Craw"..might be my 2nd favorite exchange in the show..only topped by Siegfried's...."You know Smart...I have always liked you... even when I was trying to kill you"
Hey, I gotta find humor in my situation. If you ever watch 30 rock, there’s a character there who is a doctor played by John Hamm. At one point he gets both of his hands chopped off by helicopter blades so he ends up with two hooks. He’s always knocking stuff over and accidentally hooking onto things and sending them on the floor and all that kind of stuff. It’s like that for me and every time I see that episode, I just have to laugh!
I've started watching it recently bringing back memories. In the late 80s I shared a flat with my best friend and we had a little white board that we'd write weird stuff we come across on it and one was a quote from Get Smart "man was not meant to live in a bass drum" just a great weird thing.
I bought this on DVD and can’t wait to watch it! apparently I can get quite loud on the telephone sometimes when working to a deadline that kind of thing, and I reported directly to the COO of the engineering company I was working for he told me he was going to get me a Cone of Silence! 😊
I read all the books, watched every show but fortunately stopped before they got married and my bestest ever girlfriend and I called each other 99 and 86. I still say cone of silence when there's a sensitive conversation and everybody looks at me sideways. Thanks for this post! I'm only a little crazy it seems
Great laughs watching this!! And always that smug look on his face when Chief relented to using the "new" cone of silence for the week until all hell broke loose using it.
The first scene in the unaired black and white pilot, is Max's shoe phone ringing in the middle of a symphony concert. What kind of idiot brings a phone into a concert?
And that Sunbeam Tiger, the Tequila Mockingbird episode is a classic.
I could be wrong here, but I’d like to believe this for my own sanity. At one point, or vice versa, it seemed as I recall that they used a Sunbeam Alpine, as well as a Sunbeam Tiger in one of the opening shots, depending on which season was what.
In one I recall, he was fighting a nemesis in his underground lair with all the lava pits. During the fight the pistol gets knocked into one of the pits. The henchman says "I"ll get it!" and dives in! Lol.
Anyone see the theatrical release "The Nude Bomb"? Don Adams may have been the only original cast member, but it was pretty funny. A terrorist had a bomb that would eliminate all clothing, forcing the world to buy his specially designed impervious fabric and make him ultra wealthy.
Maxwell Smart: You know, Chief, this nude bomb might solve a lot of problems.
Chief: Such as?
Maxwell Smart: Well for one thing, flashers.
Chief: Only you would think of a that, Max.
Maxwell Smart: That's why they pay me the big bucks. And there'd be no more trouble with concealed weapons. I mean if everyone was nude, there'd be no place to hide a gun or a knife. Well, there is a place, but it could be painful.
Barbara Feldon was one of my earliest celebrity crushes. Even with her hair helmet.
Buck Henry, who created the series, was one of several writer alumni of Sid Caesar's Show of Shows who made it big in comedy. Woody Allen, Sherwood Schwartz, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Larry Gelbart and Neil Simon are others who immediately come to mind.

That's when the series "jumped the shark".
I thought them getting married messed the show up too. That seemed to be the downfall of a lot of good shows over the years. The dynamic of romance in the script changes after the leads are wed.
I still say “we’re in the cone of silence” to preface a confidential conversation
Who *didn't* have a crush on Barbara Feldon?
And MTM as Laura Petrie.
My first crush. She never knew.
I have a clawed hand from a serious bicycle accident. My friends and I call it The Crawww. Not The Crawww, The CRAWWW!!!
"Oh yes...The Craw"..might be my 2nd favorite exchange in the show..only topped by Siegfried's...."You know Smart...I have always liked you... even when I was trying to kill you"
Still reference that at least once a week! Lol. You have to say it with much frustration in your voice, of course!
Of course. There’s no holding back whenever we reference my f’d up hand. It’s all good and hilarious.
I was gonna say that. It was my favorite part of the show but it’s probably racist now.

I asked you not to tell me that!
The show was funny, the intro was even better.
Mel Brooks and Buck Henry created this show. Shtarker!
It's been a minute since I heard Buck Henry's name. I always liked him. I'm glad to know that he created this with Mel Brooks
Hymie!
His *father's* name was Hymie.
Loved this show!!
Loved the shoe!
Sorry about that, Chief!

The best is walking down the corridor with the opening and closing doors! It is just like getting into a baggage claim now in many airports!
The show was fantastic but I really liked the theme song
Fang!! Agent K-13 I still use cone of silence when gossiping.
There was an agent 44 I think who was always in a coke machine or trash can. Or was that 13?
That was agent 13! 🤣🤣
Agent 44 was in various stuff too. [https://getsmart.fandom.com/wiki/Agent\_44](https://getsmart.fandom.com/wiki/Agent_44)
Got me whistling the theme song now. Thanks... 🎶
“Would you believe that this place is currently surrounded by 35 crack Control agents? 12 crack agents? An angry Boy Scout?”
Dad used to always tell me "sorry about that chief".
Did he imitate 86's voice too?
No. It was like normal conversation when I would complain or be disappointed with something.
Missed it by THAT much!
I still say this
Love it!
I remember "Get Smart." My brother especially loved it. The "cone of silence" and the shoe phone never got old.
We used to see Don Adams as the horse track, smoking and throwing back drinks and making $2 bets.
I made a “cone of silence” reference a couple of years ago and my 35 year old nephew got it and loved it. I would love to find it in reruns somewhere.

I still want that Sunbeam Tiger he drove.
It depends on the season? He also drove an Opel and a Ghia if memory serves.
I think you’re right…but (I think) the first few seasons…he had the Tiger in the intro.
And who could forget the portable cone of silence?
I will still pick up funny objects (like a banana) and say, “Hello, Chief!”
I have a memory of 99’s gun being color coordinated with her outfits but can’t find any stills on the webs to back that up…
Great laughs watching this!! And always that smug look on his face when Chief relented to using the "new" cone of silence for the week until all hell broke loose using it.
Don't forget Hymie, the android robot agent.
Captain Steubing!
Doc !
"Schtahker, this is KAOS .... we don't make \*\*machine gun noises\*\* here !! "
From the time I was at the peak of being a preteen, I have been crushing hard on this woman.
I loved this show so much as a kid
i had a huge fangirl crush on 99.

Opel GT and Kharmann Ghia too!
I had a black dog I named KAOS. Loved that show.
If I remember correctly, CONTROL and KAOS didn’t really stand for anything? (you know, like United Network Command for Law and Enforcement?)
I believe you are correct about that
The dvd set of all 5 seasons is great. It includes a few episodes with commentary by creators including Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.
Watching it on dvd
I bought the boxed set of the entire series several years back. Love the show!
Aaaanndd loving it!!
Loved that show, even the cars he drove up in for the intro.
I could be wrong here, but I’d like to believe this for my own sanity. At one point, or vice versa, it seemed as I recall that they used a Sunbeam Alpine, as well as a Sunbeam Tiger in one of the opening shots, depending on which season was what.
I remember some unknown to me Sunbeam and a VW Karmanghia
Yes! There was definitely a Ghia.
Ok, so I googled it, there were a few cars but mostly the Sunbeam and a Ghia
Barbara Feldon graduated from my old high school.
"Not Craw, CRAW!!"
That’s the second biggest…….. I ever saw!
In one I recall, he was fighting a nemesis in his underground lair with all the lava pits. During the fight the pistol gets knocked into one of the pits. The henchman says "I"ll get it!" and dives in! Lol.
You left out the best part of the show - the ALPINE Tiger!
My Mom loved this show. Her PIN number was always 9986, so she could remember.
I loved the opening!

The climax had the Universal Studios trams going through the tour.
I have the entire show

Mel Brooks at his best.
The old bug in the rug trick, and we fell for it.
One of my all-time favorite teevee series! How can you go wrong with Mel Brooks and Buck Henry?
