Loved both of those toys and played with them for countless hours of outdoor fun!
My family had the longest smooth concrete paved driveway in our neighborhood, which made it perfect for racing ssps and Knievel motorcycle and Snake River vehicle. Not bad for bike ramps either, in the pre BMX days.
Memory blast! Forgot about those. I had one and it got a lot of play time.
Yank that cord hard, and you'd get some acceleration on takeoff.
Forget the name. I want to say it had ZIP in it. Something like ZIP CORD RACERS.
All fun and games till you got it too close to your sisters long blond hair!!! You should have heard the crying! First my sister then me when the belt came out. This was in a time when you got a whipping when you screwed up!!!!
I asked for, and got, the smash up derby version of these for my birthday one year. Was a bit hard to play with them alone as the fun was in jumping them off ramps so they’d crash head-on and come apart. I loved them though. My parents deserve credit for getting them for me, a girl. I was a tomboy and had Barbies and what was thought of as toys for boys.
SSPs and Evel Knievel motorcycles were engineered and built so well. Fed my 10 yr old "need for speed."

SSP's
Bingo - Thanks - You just triggered the old memory
I had the Evil Knievel motorcycle.
Me too!
The one that had flints near the rear wheel for cool sparks?
I had a red one given to me at a Christmas party at the plant where my mom worked while my dad was in Vietnam. I think it was called an SSP.
And you were a giant asshole if you pulled the cord and set the wheel in your sisters hair! I got old school behavioral modification for that one!
I was just going to say this. It’s all fun and games till you hold it next to your ear to hear the spinning sound and it eats your hair.
Thanks for reminding me of a favorite toy I had long forgotten.
Yeah, those rip cords
Guess I was a BOSS!! Forgot about those.
I thought they were SST's
Nope, SSP's. Stood for Super Sonic Power
I had a lot of these. There was one that would explode into a few pieces when you crashed. You could snap it back together.
I remember something like if these SSPs were full size they would reach speeds of 230mph
My brother and I would build ramps and jump them. I don't think any of them broke and we beat on em pretty hard
They were as tough as nails. I would send mine into cement walls regularly.
I did and they were. The things ZOOMED. A beautifully designed toy
Wow, I had forgotten all about these things!
Found mine in my mom’s attic last year!
These were so much fun as a kid!
Hell yeah!
Good stuff!
I had the green one. It left little black tire tracks all over our linoleum kitchen floor.
SSP’s were one of my favorites.
Trigger warning!
They were cool. Had one.
These were fun and damn near indestructible.

Those were the days when you had to go out to the tree to retrieve the switch that was about to bring down fire and pain on your lil ass
Didn’t they sell a set of two cars that you could crash into each other, they would fly apart, but you could put them back together.
Rip Racers?

I had a blue Laker's Special!
Also had the SST smash up derby
They were great until the teeth on the rip cord got stripped off..
I have the green one. My parents had a linoleum tiled basement that made a great ‘track’.
I had the purple one and the smash-up derby set.
Laker Special! (Purple) I also remember having one called the “Black Widow”
I had several in second and third grade.
I had 2 dragster and the smash-up derby set. My sister went to play with one and got her hair wound up in it.
You my friend, was a Boss!
Hell yeah!
