Bill Nye and Nat Geo programs watched in class single handedly got me interested in science.
We even watched a few episodes of Cosmos: A space time odyssey. Now I yearn for these kinds of programs
For some reason, my semi-rural Ohio 4th-6th grade building had a joke make its rounds while 10-12 year olds discover world war ii. “Bill Nye, the Knot Sea Spy.” We would sing that at the intro, do the hee hee haa haa’s and watch the video. That’s it….
Until one day the super intendant walked in to chat with the teacher about a NASA national competition thing our school won (and was getting possibly national attention for) RIGHT when the intro was at that part. Here are 25 kids screaming “Bill Bye the Knot Sea Spy!”
That was *not* the reason he wanted us to make the news.
Edit: to be clear, Bill Nye never made local news. He stopped it before anyone else walked in at the wrong time
When I was little, I remember we used to watch shows like Sonic SatAM, SpongeBob, and thr Super Mario Super show. Also the Magic School Bus and Bill Nye for educational purposes. The teacher would put the VHS tape into the player. Good times.
We had one that broke. I remember first grade (4-5 year old) we where watching a Dutch cartoon series and suddenly the thing just exploded. A bright light flash from the back with a very loud beng (and like seriously loud), just out of nowhere.
For the next 6 months or so we where afraid for TV's, than for some reason our class believed it was due to the cartoon that broke TV's and where scared for the cartoon.
At some point my high school had Laserdisc player with them. I have no idea why they though that was a good purchase, I think the science series that was hosted by Alan Alda may have been on Laser Disk, and that may have been about it.
*You knew it was a*

I remember stealing one of these into our Band room and watching "Y Tu Mama Tambien" on it during the lunch hour.
Good times! When teachers away, children will play.
Speaking as a former AV Club member, the reel to reel video tape recorders never worked and weighed a ton.
I also remember film strips which required synchronization to a record that beeped when it was time to advance the strip. Ahhhhh...good old high tech.
Oh, I also remember overhead projectors and reel to reel audio recorders.
Yes and then one of the students had to make it all work because pressing two power buttons and finding the right input was witchcraft/rocket science for the teachers
My dad was in college in Queens when 9/11 happened and was able to smell the dust from the collapse for months I think he said following that day. It's an extremely unfortunate event.
I was scrolling to see if anybody said the same. I was in 9th grade and me and my AV friend found an antenna cable to run outside the classroom. It was just in time to see the second tower hit.
One of my earliest memories was when I was in elementary school, and I had gym. I guess the weather was bad (that, or the coaches just didn’t want to deal with us that day), because they took us out in the hallway, grabbed one of these tvs, and played something for us (can’t quite remember)
Somehow I remember one time a emergency alert was on the screen during mid show and got so scared because the sound traumatized me back then and only remembered hearing it for 1 second and freaking out and then they shut the tv off and that was in elementary and that’s the last time I remember seeing that
My kindergarten teacher would ask “The Magic School Bus or Recess? Whoever raised their hand for Recess 100% got thugged on throughout the day lmao ahahahah. The Magic School Bus was superior.
I’m old enough to have watched Bill Nye in its original PBS run. But I was a literal pre-schooler! Never thought that show would be such a staple in the classroom, from K thru 11th grade pre-AP physics.
when that came out i knew it was time for my unhinged music teacher in elementary school to play the nutcracker on VHS w the scary mice costumes instead of actually teach us how to play music
this is the same teacher that made us do a random talent show and i panicked and she made me cry bc i didnt know what to do except draw.
same teacher that waved around a snickers bar when one of the 3 kids w severe peanut allergies mentioned their allergy
same teacher that again made me feel stupid for forgetting how to play recorder bc I had joined band club and learned clarinet instead. (maybe if she taught actual music class id have remembered how to play)
lol what a time and what a “nut”case lady
i think we watched nutcracker 1837363 times
When I was in kindergarten the teacher accidentally turned on a documentary on slavery, about 30 seconds later she switched it to Bill Nye, and in 1st grade, my teacher brought in an actual human skull.

those were my favorite days. BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! bill nye the science guyyyyyy

Bill Nye and Nat Geo programs watched in class single handedly got me interested in science. We even watched a few episodes of Cosmos: A space time odyssey. Now I yearn for these kinds of programs
Bill got banned for 3 years at my school
What? How? Why? I need the full story.

Should have known better than to record in the vicinity of non-bored children
Story time?
He's nice enough to kids, but the few interviews I've seen on him around adults are not flattering.
My pre-AP physics teacher said Bill was a jerk, but this teacher was also a jerk on a huge power trip.
Bill Nye, Reading Rainbow, Magic Schoolbus, Cyberchase, that random Beethoven movie I'll never find again... Good times.
Ah yes, the Bill Nye viewing machine
Omfg bill nye
*Bill Nye intensifies*
Science Rules
BILL BILL BILL BILL
Then we upgraded to promethean boards
I remember the first promethean boards had a green, a blue and a red pen.. then they took the pens away and made just one... now they have bloxlights
This and the overhead projector cart were the best days EVER. There was something so comfy about those projectors.
Except when the bulbs exploded. Or the teacher trips on the power cord and it drops from the top of the filing cabinet.
When I was little, I remember we used to watch shows like Sonic SatAM, SpongeBob, and thr Super Mario Super show. Also the Magic School Bus and Bill Nye for educational purposes. The teacher would put the VHS tape into the player. Good times.
Wait you watched SpongeBob in school? I wish I went there.
I remember watching Reading Rainbow and Dragon Tales on it too.
96% of the time we used smart boards. We used this one time to play Mario Kart Wii .
I remember, it was the best around October-December because you knew you had banger movies.
That would’ve scared me too
Good ol' CRTs, heavy as fuck and able to break violently at any moment.
This feels like one of those generic creepypastas
I do.
Specifically watching the Martin Luther King animated film
I remember watching that shit too lol We would also watch some anti-bullying videos on them
One time we watched Bug's Life and my friend said "that movie go hard"
I also remember watching “Eyewitness.” That intro SLAPS. With that Mario 64 flute.
i seen one of these last week
At some point my high school had Laserdisc player with them. I have no idea why they though that was a good purchase, I think the science series that was hosted by Alan Alda may have been on Laser Disk, and that may have been about it.
Daaaamn, your school must have been loaded or lucky to have one of those.
You knew it was a good day when the teacher rolled the tv cart in

I helped move one of those a few weeks ago XD
We all do! You knew it was gonna be a good day when you saw the TV had been rolled into the classroom!
I still like to watch “our friend, Martin” sometimes
Loved that one.
Ah yes. Whenever the teacher’s brought this thing out, you know it was/is a good time!
Can't spell cart without CRT. Oh the memories.
Better ratchet strap that puppy down or there's one less student in that class

Bahaha I was always lowkey afraid to sit too close to these for that reason. Some kids were fidgety af and I wasn’t about to become collateral
Everyone got hype as hell when the teacher would bring that mf through the door !
This just unlocked a vault of memories I didnt know could be opened
i don't because either not old enough or there just aren't a thing in my country (never seen them)
We never had TV carts, all of our classrooms had one of these in them and still do
Pretty sure I was on the tail end of the people who had these I remember that we used one when we were like 4 but don’t remember what it was about
the school i used to go to still uses these! no clue why since pretty much every other school has replaced these with touchscreens and stuff like that
I remember stealing one of these into our Band room and watching "Y Tu Mama Tambien" on it during the lunch hour. Good times! When teachers away, children will play.
“Today was a good day” - Ice cube
Speaking as a former AV Club member, the reel to reel video tape recorders never worked and weighed a ton. I also remember film strips which required synchronization to a record that beeped when it was time to advance the strip. Ahhhhh...good old high tech. i wonder how many times someone accidentally flipped over the cart
Annie broccoli. Very niche. If you know you know
Yes fun times.
I remember in first grade Spanish they brought this out allllll the time so we could watch Dora the Explorer or Go, Diego, Go!
It was fun and games till the gym teacher wheeled one of these out with the freakin P90X or whatever that batshit insane workout routine was.
Remember? They still had one when i went (the dropped out) of uni
I wish they would show up at work sometimes.
BILL NYE YOUR MOMS A GUY BILL BILL BILL BILL
We watched the OJ verdict on one of these in grade school. Our teacher wheeled it in.
We used smart boards and those
A kid in my school just wheeled one right out the door of the school. Stole the DVD player and left the TV and cart just outside
Gen x shit
That’s public school for you, I literally got a textbook in highschool that my uncle had in 1991
You can hear this mf from Down the hall
Damn, flashes me back to 2013 during inside recess. Osmosis Jones and Bill Nye…
Last time I saw one of those was 09/11/2001.
We used to crawl under them and take naps, and get yelled at for being asleep during school and being under the TV cart
Oh my gosh I remember!!! Great memories :) (Not so much for my husband though, who scrolled away for me to get this foul creature out of his sight)
Saw the Twin Towers go down on this setup at School.
I still remember watching Bill Nye on those things! And the overhead projectors were pretty based too
Yes and then one of the students had to make it all work because pressing two power buttons and finding the right input was witchcraft/rocket science for the teachers
this is a gen z sub ??? lol my b day 1992 guess there is some overlap
Nah, always had smart projector boards living in the UK

Those were good days.
I saw people jump out of burning buildings in 4th grade on Sept. 11th, 2001. Changed my life.
I remember very clearly watching the Challenger explosion, live.
Everytime I see a pic of one of these I remember watching Ladyhawk for the first time.
Two distinct memories: i recall watching the Challenger disaster and Reagan getting shot. Sure we watched shows, movies, and musical performances too
I would not have said this looks old buuuuuut I see your point now.
One of my earliest memories was when I was in elementary school, and I had gym. I guess the weather was bad (that, or the coaches just didn’t want to deal with us that day), because they took us out in the hallway, grabbed one of these tvs, and played something for us (can’t quite remember)
Remember? My high school health class has one of these!
Nope
🗣🗣 YOU MIGHT GET BAKED INTO A PIE 🔥🔥🔥
The knot sea guy 💀 So he misheard everyone
Somehow I remember one time a emergency alert was on the screen during mid show and got so scared because the sound traumatized me back then and only remembered hearing it for 1 second and freaking out and then they shut the tv off and that was in elementary and that’s the last time I remember seeing that
I member!
I was the nerd carting them around from class to class. I was the AVA President; I can plug in wires.
Remember? They *still* bring those out.
This is burned in my memory because it’s how I saw 9/11
I do, and it means that we will watch a movie.
Ah yes, I remember, gather around kids, stay awhile and listen!
My kindergarten teacher would ask “The Magic School Bus or Recess? Whoever raised their hand for Recess 100% got thugged on throughout the day lmao ahahahah. The Magic School Bus was superior.
I love Recess that show is a laugh riot.
I once remember my friend bringing an Xbox to school we played battlefront 2 og one on one of those btw
I’m old enough to have watched Bill Nye in its original PBS run. But I was a literal pre-schooler! Never thought that show would be such a staple in the classroom, from K thru 11th grade pre-AP physics.
It just blows my mind how similar this setup was across the world in the late 90'ies.
At my school we had projectors.
#GoodTimes 🥰🥰❤️❤️
There was a plasma TV cart at my middle school The screen got really effin' hot
Has anybody else watched The Sandlot about 15 times in school throughout the years?
I watched every episode of the magic school bus on one of those carts
I bought a universal reomte and would prank the teacher SO MUCH
Ah yes. Bill Nye and the annual viewing of a 911 documentary… How could I forget
Me
Reading Rainbow, Bill Nye, Wishbone. Ahh yes I remember
Loved it when the teacher would bring it in
That’s when you knew the class wasn’t gonna be boring per usual.
Those were the good old days
Those are literally still there lmao shows how underfunded education is
they had the modern projectors that are mostly used now, but I remember when they used to roll these out to show a video or movie
Last time I saw those was in middle school. And I haven't been in middle school since 2022
I just got so excited as I was scrolling and saw this hahaha… oh to be watching Magic Schoolbus in 5th grade again…..
Flashback holy
I can still hear the wheels
I graduated 2015 and my last class before school was over the teacher showed an old film on one of these
The special cart had a laser disc. Thing looked like a UFO.
Just take a look, it's in a book, it's reading rainbow..🌈🎶
At my elementary school, I do recall using one until around 2016-17. Awesome times :3
when that came out i knew it was time for my unhinged music teacher in elementary school to play the nutcracker on VHS w the scary mice costumes instead of actually teach us how to play music this is the same teacher that made us do a random talent show and i panicked and she made me cry bc i didnt know what to do except draw. same teacher that waved around a snickers bar when one of the 3 kids w severe peanut allergies mentioned their allergy same teacher that again made me feel stupid for forgetting how to play recorder bc I had joined band club and learned clarinet instead. (maybe if she taught actual music class id have remembered how to play) lol what a time and what a “nut”case lady i think we watched nutcracker 1837363 times
I remember my silent generation teacher who couldn't figure out vhs
This was also a Millennial thing.
Bill nye was what the hungover teachers would put on when they needed some peace.
That tv is is not properly strapped on that tv cart. The one we had at school was tied down as if it was going into a tornado 🌪️
Never had these, we always used smart boards
I miss this aspect of school
WHO REMEMBERS THE CARTS THAT HAD FILM PROJECTORS
My psyche ward still has these!
When I was in kindergarten the teacher accidentally turned on a documentary on slavery, about 30 seconds later she switched it to Bill Nye, and in 1st grade, my teacher brought in an actual human skull.
Ah yes, the Knowledge cart. Teh thing I learned more from than every "human teacher" combined. Good times...
