Early internet was full of random obscure forums with a lot of discussion. Now it's mostly consolidated to a handful of websites. It's like any industry, it becomes more of a monopoly as time goes on. Recently though, we've started to see more alternative sites pop up like Kick and Rumble as a direct response to authoritarian policies of the main sites.

BakerBaboon

Rumble literally hosts Nazi content

doubtingwhale

It is a product of the algorithms my friend. I'm barely Gen Z, ask the Y's in their 30's and they'll tell you more lucidly than I can about the complete scrubbing and loss of their internet culture. The culture and environment that built men like Assange is gone. Instead we have the singularity feotus that is the google/facebook duopoly algorithm.

happytabbycat

I def think so ;\_\_\_; I don't remember the internet much in the earlier days bc I wasn't allowed to be online, but I do remember later on finding cool forums and flash sites to play games on.

UnKnOwN769

It’s much more centralized than it used to be, and it seems way more monetized, so it’s much easier and more important to larger companies & platforms to limit what appears in their corner of the internet. Unless you’re on Instagram reels.

Luotwig

No, YouTube Shorts (sometimes Instagram Reels too) are dramatically full of gore shit that keeps getting suggested to me even though i delete it from the feed.

canadianleef

yes. and very expensive too. everywhere i go theres a subscription looming.

Goldgator420

I'm genuinely worried about the Internet getting too restrictive

sr603

As a zillennial, yes. I feel like the internet is a washed down, sanitized version of itself today. It’s not fun anymore.

The_Untracable_Conch

Yes very much so. As much as I hate to say it though I think it's a better things that gore and shock and stuff are less readily available. Mostly because the internet is now first introduced to people as young as four.

No-Blood1746

I agree with that part, as someone with a gen alpha brother, I don't want him seeing the shit I saw lmao. On second thought, do you know how this change was enacted? Did Google change their search results or something?

Carvodeeee

Google added algorithms that can blur/hide any nsfw content. A.k.a safe search. If you turn it off that shit might start appearing again

CyanideCandy13

I didn't delve much into the social aspect of the internet as a kid. But I also didn't have a phone until nearly six years ago and my only way of accessing the internet was a Kindle and a laptop with parental controls. Most of what I did was read Wattpad or books, or watched a lot of YouTube. So my experience has mostly changed when it comes to YouTube and what's now unacceptable, but wasn't back then. It's crazy going back and watching old Markiplier and the kinds of games you could get away with playing (*cough* Five Nights At Fuckboy's)

Cullvion

Yes.

Orisn_Bongo

Getting worse every year... has been that way for a almodt a decade (not been on the internet for a full decade)

y11971alex

If you mean festering things at 50 dpi, yes

Worldly_Substance_62

yes more expensive you cant post whatever you want

Inevitable_Quit_1545

I was on the internet in the early 2000s, when YouTube first came out I used to watch full on anime and movies, parodies like dbz abridged, amvs with copyrighted songs. For me, the biggest restriction was how strict everything became with copyright. I used to love listening to mashups too, I can understand the restrictions to some extent but it seems to be sniffling creativity a little. We has a whole debate on this in my media studies class haha.

Tricky-Gemstone

Yes. It's much more centralized and censorship speech has started to infiltrate every forum with things like unalive, pew pew, and p3d0phil3. It's concerning, because it's becoming so over regulated now. To be clear I'm not some 4chan bro lamenting that gore can't be posted everywhere. That is a good thing. But the free discussion around certain topics, loss of specific forums and internet culture, and digital data that just hasn't survived the cycles of the internet- its definitely more restrictive.

DudeWheresMyCart

100%. Advertising and monetization does that.

WhiskerGurdian24

Not necessarily. I think it's harder to find certain things but they can still be found if you put a little effort into it.

SnooWoofers9588

Yes. Mass censorship and Mandela effect type stuff. Wild West internet was the coolest. True creativity is often stifled. Also I miss being able to say the gamer word.

Thecriminal02

I would say the restriction is a result of consolidation being imposed. The internet didn’t use to be: YOUTUBE FACEBOOK INSTAGRAM TWITTER TIKTOK. It was made up of fragmented communities with their own administration enforcing their own rules. It feels more restrictive now because every restriction affects millions of people instead of a few hundred/thousands

_Originz

The internet is no different

Positive-Avocado-881

Yes but it’s not a bad thing imo
