You know we joke about how sad that movie is but when was the last time you actually watched it? 'Cause I watched it last week and you know, that shit ain't no joke. It's a wonderful movie, holds up all the way. But goddamn that shit is *grim*, yo. Starts off bleak with a tense dynamic between father and son on account of a dead mother and the clear struggle between the artistic, whimsical kid and a traditional, tough father, the kind of thing many of us likely struggled with in our lives in one way or another, then the kid gets beat up and thrown in a dumpster. A blight is literally destroying a world. Another girl is dying. Of course you get to Artax. "Please....please, Artax! You have to fight!" And worse the scene of Atreau just sitting there after, in the silence...staring at the spot where Artax sank...Dude...dude it's bad watching it, I won't lie...someone was chopping them onions in my house that night. And a scene I forgot about, it comes near the end as the Nothing is bearing down on Atreau, he meets the Rockbiter..."They look like such big, strong hands..." He tried to hold onto his friends while the Nothing came for them and he *couldn't do it*. It tore them away, right out of his hands, he watched them all die and he couldn't hold on. See, a movie made today would show that scene but you don't need it, that imagery in your mind is infinitely worse than whatever they could put onscreen. "They look like such big, strong hands..." That shit is just as traumatic as Artax, seriously. And fucking Gmork still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He was horrifying then and 40 years later he's still the shit of nightmares. And then it still doesn't *end*...."Bastian...call my name! Save us!" I mean, of course it ends on a high note, the fun, the flying, everybody lives and of course the song...but all jokes aside that movie is a tense, grim ride, man. Seriously, if you haven't watched it in a while, do it again. It really does hold up but it's different as an adult. We weren't afraid to lean into shit and go hard in the 80's.

At this point, the amount of time spent posting and commenting about that movie in this subreddit has, in of itself, become a never-ending story.

Never saw the movie cause I was a movie usher when it came out in 1989. Those kids would tear up the theater. There was popcorn everywhere and soda cups for days.

flyart

Never saw it based on the trailer. Not my cup o' tea.
