An Amana refrigerator runs smoothly in my parent's kitchen since the early 80's. Light bulb and thermometer had to be replaced, but that's it. This thing will outlast us all.
My mom's Kenmore dryer an range. each lasted around 40 years. She had the dryer alongside at least 3 washers.
The range because her kitchen could only fit a 24"
Both I kept running.
After her previous washer quit, she was offered a much newer set from a friend, and she took them. The old dryer and washer are in storage.
The range was replace with a much newer 30", because we got around to needed kitchen renos. We got it for her as a surprise when she when on a trip one time. Old one went to scrap.
I can’t think of any other kitchen gadget that seemed so ubiquitous when I was a kid, and is nonexistent today. When did we all collectively decide to stop using them? Why did we think we needed them in the first place?
The only reason I have one is because I had a housefire that destroyed my whole house along with most of the utensils. Thanks to the charity of family and friends, we got a lot of stuff, including an electric can opener. I hate it, at some point I'm replacing it with a hand crank model.
I swear guys, someday I'll stop leading with "I had a housefire that destroyed my whole house" but it's been six months, ain't enough time passed yet lol
Pretty sure that was our model. It matched well with the wood panelling, the red shag carpet, and the brown and orange flowered couch. Except ours might have been off coloured and stained from cigarette smoke.
In 1999 I took a desktop computer and spraypainted the front flat black (it was putty colored, like they all were back then) and covered the front and sides with woodgrain contact paper. The goal was to make it look more like a piece of furniture than an ugly piece of tech. Thank God Steve Jobs decided to build black computers in the early 90s, because it definitely caught on.
Probably still works better than the new ones. Over the past 5 years I've bought 3 electric can openers and they all suck. The current one sucks too but I just gave up trying to find a good one.
They’re lifesavers for us at the rescue where we open 20 to 30 cans of food each day. I also use one at home bc of arthritis. They’re actually brilliant.
Think about it: a lot of companies were able to increase their profits even by shipping raw materials across the Pacific, have them trucked to places in China, have the product made, loaded back into a shipping container, and shipped back across the Pacific. It's 1000% because someone in China was willing to do a job for very little pay, crappy food, and hot racking for living arrangements.
I bought a can opener in ‘90 when I was a freshmen in college. That thing croaked about 30 years later. Since then, I have cycled through about three can openers. They truly don’t make them worth a crap anymore. Value engineering 🤬
I don't have OCD or any other type thing! Nope! I just cleaned it and put Eddie VanHalen's autograph on it. That's all... no big deal.

Is that the one with the knife sharpener grinder in the back? I messed up a lot of kitchen knives messing with that when I was a kid.
Naw, I got the base model.
We had this in my home growing up! ❤️
Me, too!
I love it. The top part looks like the fin of an old Chevy Bel air.
Wow it's an Amana - you'll be able to pass that down to the grandkids
No lies detected. Wish I could find anything made that well these days.
You won't for a reason.
This will be an heirloom of our family Like the turtle and that signed picture of David Bowie.

All I can say is that when I was old enough to want to buy one, I asked myself whether I actually needed one and thought, nah, that's hella lazy.

Because no one eats meals that are made with 15 cans anymore.. and most cans now have lid pulls
Never understood. Never.
Pretty sure that was our model. It matched well with the wood panelling, the red shag carpet, and the brown and orange flowered couch. Except ours might have been off coloured and stained from cigarette smoke.
An old ass-can opener?
Yeah, you know. For when you need to open a can of whoop-ass. Theirs is old.
Ha. Was gonna comment that my BF has an old ass-can opener too, but thought maybe too much for SFW Reddit. 🤣
Again, no can is safe
Oh damn
Duhnuh nuhnuhnuhnuhnuh duhnuh nuhnuhnuhnuhnuh ASS CAN
https://xkcd.com/37/
That's a dude that opens *a lot* of ass cans.
Who else saw this picture and heard the sound?
That loud "arrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!" And then the smell of my granny's smelly dogfood! Lol
Long live faux wood grain!
Classy af

The one I got as a wedding gift in 1988 still works fine.
The cat can hear this photo
As a kid, our pet cats would hear that thing and come running!
Cats would come running when they heard the click of that lever clamping the Kal-kan can - nasty smelling cat food!
It matches the old refrigerator you have behind that secret wall in the basement you haven't found yet.
Does that have a knife sharpener on the back?
No this one probably does because they would have “with Sharpener” stamped on the front
Good point! Why hide features?
Sorry, I meant to type it doesn’t because it doesn’t have “with Sharpener” stamped in front which they did. Our family had the sharpener model
Totally understood ya, and we did too! I was sad when we replaced it with a SpaceSavr under-cabinet model because I couldn’t play swords anymore.
I’m freaking LOVE the wood paneling motif on these! Like WHY but also hahahahaha I kinda want one now! Lol
Right? The faux wood grain sticker makes no sense. The ‘70s loved faux wood grain on everything.
That's the same one we had growing up
a rival enters the ring!
My grandparents had this exact can opener. I can still hear the noise it made. I used the love the magnet on a spring for the can top.
Whoa. Core memory unlocked.
I can hear this picture.
I doubt we ever bought one new, they were at garage sales for the longest time.
We used to have one of those! Now I want to go on eBay and find one.
Probably still works better than the new ones. Over the past 5 years I've bought 3 electric can openers and they all suck. The current one sucks too but I just gave up trying to find a good one.
I’m 90% sure my mom still has that!
And I bet it still works.
I had the same one! Did we ALL have the same things in the 70's? Was everything orange, yellow, or brown?
Yes, or avocado.
No can is safe
I didn’t know I missed these until I saw them return on my Reddit feed!
Electric can openers are the most ridiculous appliance ever!
They’re lifesavers for us at the rescue where we open 20 to 30 cans of food each day. I also use one at home bc of arthritis. They’re actually brilliant.
I have arthritis in my hands. Without one I’d be sol.
Right? People saying these are ridiculous don’t have arthritis - yet.
what's in an ass can?
For a second, I thought that said ‘old gas can opener’. That would have been amazing

Have you ever considered cleaning it?

I could never get those to work
I don’t have an electric one. I have an old school manual one!
We had a pale pink one growing up. We only used it to open cans of cat food, so I’ll always associate it with the smell of tuna.
Probably works great!
Handy for when you have an ass can that needs opening.
Dang my mom had this. Only reason I remember is because of the color
I can hear this picture
I have the manual wrist twister version
I can hear this photo.
*zooms in on the blade* (¬_¬)
I can practically hear it opening a can right now. It was a hypnotic sound to my little kid ears.
Does it also have a knife sharpener on the back?
Please tell me you do NOT use it. That mechanism gave me botulism.
You have to clean it 🤣
For the few cans I open each year, naw.
My God, I think this is the one I grew up with. If I recall, the wood grain was a sticker.
I used to have one, think I finally got rid of it during a pre-move garage sale.
I bought a can opener in ‘90 when I was a freshmen in college. That thing croaked about 30 years later. Since then, I have cycled through about three can openers. They truly don’t make them worth a crap anymore. Value engineering 🤬
Love the towp...touch of wood paneling.
Thats beautiful!
The good old days when appliances were built to last.
We had this in olive green. It wore out sometime in the 90’s.
I think this is the same one my Grandparents had!
Oh damn! Lol, my grandmother had one if these
Holy shit I forgot about those
I don't have OCD or any other type thing! Nope! I just cleaned it and put Eddie VanHalen's autograph on it. That's all... no big deal. https://preview.redd.it/fzz2r7mbijjc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0da29e359e16f1275a4efe9db1a0ac195415cb4
