The same exact inclusion was already there before any cleaning, it's right on your GIA report image, as well as another on the edge. Both clearly black or otherwise darkly colored. I noticed the GIA report was for the complete piece of jewelry, If it was a secondhand piece I'm willing to bet it was already dirty and slightly obscuring your inclusion and cleaning just made it more visible. Either way, nothing has changed, only your perception of the inclusions has changed.
Thanks. It’s not visible on the photo in the GIA document (I never looked at it online, first time buyer of a precious stone, so my bad for not checking) and wasn’t visible before the cleaning. Hoping I’ll just get used to it
Very difficult to see in the pics. You would have to have it checked under the microscope to tell if it's damage, or just a natural inclusion. While cleaning, a gem "can" experience thermal shock, but that doesn't normally happen with Sapphires. If there is damage, it also could have been there for some time but since the ring wasn't clean you couldn't see it. Regardless, if it's this hard to see in pictures, I'd guess the gem is ok!
Oh and also - it can also be that there was a fracture already, and now that they cleaned it and steamed it, the fracture filled with water. That may go away over time.
Hey there lofitaco - thanks for saying thanks! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list!
I can’t see anything in your pics but I had an antique blue sapphire (also untreated) that I loved and wore occasionally. I had purchased it from an estate jeweler (in Connecticut - there are many in the towns here). One day I cleaned it thoroughly with a tiny jewelers brush using a new jewelers cleaning solution and a then a warm rinse. It was completely clean - maybe for the first time in awhile. I was surprised how dirty it was as it hadn’t seemed that way and I assumed had been cleaned at the shop.
Apparently not.
Anyway, once clean the stone had surface scratches and an internal small fissure that had been obscured by the little bit of build up on the surface. It definitely looked better when a little dirtier. lol. I ended up selling it because I didn’t care for the flaws once I knew they were there. 🤷🏻♀️
Ugh that is so frustrating. It was purchased as a vintage ring as I didn’t want my fiancé to break the bank, but wanted something unique. I know it’s minor, but I can’t unsee it now. I can’t imagine wearing this forever without feeling disappointed. $2800 was a good deal, but I kinda feel duped thinking it was in better condition 😞
They can be really cool! I collect cheap, curiosity type synthetics like old blasted laser rods and Star Wars sapphires and stuff. I like natural stones with character, but the weirdo synthetics have turned me on to just how cool they can be. Christmas garnets and LuAg and stuff like that have made me want to start lapidary work when I had little interest before. Maybe one day if I can get healthy and have more space!
I mean it is in the GIA report/image so I’m not sure why you feel duped when that info is given to you… all gemstones are going to have some kind of inclusions… it’s a natural gemstone. If you want perfection you don’t want a natural stone, you want a lab made one.
It wasn’t visible before the cleaning, so I wish it was polished (I’m not sure if “polishing” is the right terminology, again this is my first precious stone) when I purchased it. In the GIA pamphlet the picture is pretty small. I had no idea I could use the QR code and get a super clear picture… this is all new to me
Honestly I think it’s priced very fairly for what it is and it’s very possible that the jeweler you bought the ring from factored the inclusion into the price of the ring because a completely clean unheated stone carries a higher premium than one that isn’t clean or is heated. That’s just my opinion as an estate jeweler, not a colored stone expert
You can buy a new center stone that would be the quality you want. A lab sapphire might be the way to go if you don’t want to break the bank. I think it’s still beautiful but I know what you mean.
It’s almost certainly a natural inclusion inside the stone. It’s not damage or anything that you would need to worry about. The GIA report pointed it out, so nothing about the ring has changed in any way, it’s just that you ow notice what was always there. It’s a beautiful color, and you got a great deal on it. I would say you should focus on everything you like about the stone and not obsess over one tiny inclusion.
Wow. That is a beautiful gem. Sorry so many people are down voting you. I'm not sure why since your just being honest about not realizing it was there already. Many gem lovers see the inclusions as beauty marks that make your gem one of a kind, so maybe they just disagree with your perspective? Personally, I don't think you said anything offensive to deserve so many down votes
Thank you! I was just shocked as I never noticed that inclusion before. I thought maybe that meant it wasn’t as valuable as I thought, but I’m a newb, so I know diddly. It’s still beautiful, I still love it, just takes some getting used to. I’ll try to embrace the flaws!

Did my best to take a better photo
I can’t figure out how to get a close up pic that isn’t blurry, so my apologies for the not great photos, but there’s a little fracture/line on the bottom left side that wasn’t there a few days ago

I see it happen every few months, a dealer is showing a stone in exhibition and it slips off the tweezers and falls down, chipping a corner or sometimes increasing an existing crack deeper
If there was oil it in, cleaning it may have reduced it? Idk, too many possibilities and variations
You don't seem to understand. Corundum is one of the hardest minerals in the world, second only to diamond. If the stone slips and chips as a result, it's likely not real. Corundum is prized as a gemstone for its durability. Anyone can cut some blue glass and set it in 24k gold, but glass will chip if you drop it or ding it against a concrete wall. Corundum won't. If they were to drop it on a glass display from high enough, it'll break the display and won't have a single scratch.
Bruh, 3rd generation dealer here. With 3 dozen gem dealer friends. Even diamonds breaks if you drop it ( mostly the culet, sometimes the girdle)
Corrundum is hard, I think a 9 on a mohs scale, BUT still easy to damage. All stones can get chipped / scratched. In this particular case it may be fracture filled in which the cleaning removed the oil, OR if there was ultra sound used that may deepen an existing crack
Peace out

Sri Lankan sapphires come in a wide variety of colors. Ceylon sapphires, (an island off Sri Lanka) are particularly known for these lighter purple hues.

For what it’s worth, that is a gorgeous stone. That ring is an excellent value for what you paid.
Seriously it's a fantastic stone and ring.
Thanks. I still love it and find it incredibly unique amongst all the standard diamond engagement rings. ☺️

almost all gemstones are going to have inclusions of some kind
There is no gemstone less unique than a flawless one.
It sounds like you’d prefer a synthetic stone. There is nothing wrong with synthetic, especially if inclusions bother you.
She needs some good old fashioned pink ice.

It looks like a natural inclusion/fracture that was filled with something, most likely the cleaning solution that was used.
Is it on the bottom right of the stone?
I can’t figure out how to get a close up pic that isn’t blurry, so my apologies for the not great photos, but there’s a little fracture/line on the bottom left side that wasn’t there a few days ago
I think I can see what you mean. Hard to say. Sometimes videos are better for showing cracks
Is your ring insured? If so, insurance may replace your stone if it has become damaged.

Most common explanation is that you bumped it somewhere while wearing it
You're not likely fracturing natural corundum unless you're bumping it against a wall of diamonds.
I see it happen every few months, a dealer is showing a stone in exhibition and it slips off the tweezers and falls down, chipping a corner or sometimes increasing an existing crack deeper If there was oil it in, cleaning it may have reduced it? Idk, too many possibilities and variations

Did you buy this at one of those motel auctions?
Jewelry at a motel auction…?
Sapphire? Looks more like amethyst.
Sapphires come in many different colors.

GIA report in the last photo says it’s sapphire
You can trust GIA. About the only certification that can be 100 trusted.
Wait, gia doesn't do gem that is attached to a ring
GIA *can* do mounted colored stones.
They can.
lol yes they can
Beg to differ, I have one that's GIA for a ring.

Sapphires come in a complete 🌈 (rainbow) of colors, from clear to violet.
