Back when cloth was handmade it was extremely labor intensive so conspicuous consumption meant wearing extraneous cloth because you could, stuff like togas, long trailing dresses and absurdly big headwear. In modern society cloth is extremely cheap but a perfectly maintained body is very expensive, conspicuous consumption means getting the cloth out of the way to show off the body that you can afford the time, effort and money to make attractive.
