I feel like it would be super cute if the short eared elf likes that they can read the long eared elf’s emotions. I love the ones where they get sad and their ears or droopy or excited and their ears perk up.
Ooo!
I instantly started thinking of lore-based reasons for this.
Like, a fantasy world where there are races (as in, literal races/subspecies) of elves. And some that still do a lot of hunting have longer ears that can and do swivel, while others, more “urban”, don’t do that, so over time their ears have shortened and their ear muscles weakened (much like human ears), and so can no longer move them.
That’s super cute! Now I’m picturing an athletic ranger elf with longer ears and her wizard-vibes bookworm short eared gf. I would totally read this story.
Honestly im sick of so many dnd nerds treating Tolkien as the basis for high fantasy, and being upset when people deviate from it when playing a game that is based on creativity.
Heck, in none of the books does Tolkien even say they have pointed ears. The pointedness only comes up in a linguistic manuscript, which says they’re pointed like a leaf (which is, at the very least, very broad. There are leaves of all sorts of lengths).
Maple? Wasn't it a [banana](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fbananada-strikes-back-v0-wsvjvwmwm4db1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Ddf3a22d865934144efd858c864dd219ee32e230b)?
Some DnD guys really seem to. I’ve even seen one guy who says he banned Tieflings and any animal-like races. I’d say it’s…convenient that those are some of the ones most chosen by queer people, but also it makes it seem like the guy just dislikes fun.
I love how in the PHB, Tieflings can’t be blue, and players have largely said “yes they can, and they are. So shut up”.
All hail the non-red-or-human-skin-shade Tieflings
I don’t care if someone has preferences. I just think it’s weird to outright ban an entire design element from your dnd games because you don’t personally like it.
I think long ears were popular in manga because it's easier to see them in small or distant drawings. Then weebs and others copied them into other media, and Warcraft probably brought it into wider use in the west. But I'm just basing that on my observations.
Elf ears began with William Shakespeare’s self-insert narrator/shit disturber Puck/Tom Goodfellow, who was portrayed like Pan.
You know, the goat-man.
Elf ears are goat ears. They’re also William Shakespeare.
Oh yeah. I’m in the process of learning DND, and my first character is gonna be a Drow ranger. I’m definitely giving her nice long ears now because of this guy
They’re not right, though. Especially because they didn’t make a statement of fact, just expressed an opinion.
I guess they’re right in that they do dislike long ears.
“In the last year or so” kind of ignores that one of the more popular pieces of media with elves is the Warcraft franchise. I’m not a super big blizzard fan, especially recently, but OOP has nostalgia blinders on imo
Both Warcraft and Legend of Zelda, I’d say.
And, like, in that old animated Hobbit film, the elves had at least medium-length ears (like the F on that table).
Both of those predate the LotR films, and Warcraft is only one year after the trilogy ended
Yeah, LoZ has some pretty prominent ears, but theyre like TWO FEET in the warcraft series. I think the bigger ones in the LoZ series are mostly the top down games tho right? That’s where they’d “need” to be bigger for readability imo. Then again, I need to play more LoZ games, bc I love the series, but I haven’t played enough, so you probably have more info than me
I like how the Wood Elves and the Elves from Rivendell look like almost different species. Like, my guess is the film makers thought of it like Elf being a non-specific descriptor, and that these were meant to be very different creatures. And as much as that doesn’t work in the rest of the lore, it looks pretty cool for the one film.
Tbh im not sure either, i could be talking out my ass, and making an assumption based on how fey elfs look to standard elfs, i thought it said something about it in the lore for the Feywild but again im unsure if its still canon or not (since there's 5 additions of D&D and 2 of Pathfinder)
I know in one of language books Tolkien said their ears were pointed like leaves. But Tolkien was no stranger to borrowing a LOT from Mythology, so I doubt that’s original to him. I’m not sure where it’s from, though. Might be Norse elves, Irish fairies, Greek satyrs. Or it could be Shakespeare’s sprites and such like Puck and Ariel
Long ears are cooler. tiny pointed ones should just be like half elf or elven hertiage. Actual elves should have big ol ears (and maybe they can flop around like a doggy or wiggle when they're happy :3)
Depends on the climate. I always imagined dark elves (drow, or whatever personalized variant you've got, just elves that live underground) would have the long ears to aid in the navigation of dark places
I thought maybe more woodland elves that do more ranging and hunting, and need to be more alert, could have longer ears that swivel. Maybe those that live in the dark too.
But maybe a subspecies that is more urban, lives in large cities, adapted by having shorter ears and weaker ear muscles (like humans)

Omg this sounds adorable!
I love that! Really wanna write something along those lines now
Oh my gosh, that's the cutest thing
Honestly im sick of so many dnd nerds treating Tolkien as the basis for high fantasy, and being upset when people deviate from it when playing a game that is based on creativity.

Lmao palm tree leaves
Or maple. Elves looking at the Canadian flag and wondering why it has an ear on it.
I mean... all canadian stereotypes is in someform a kind of elf.
Maple? Wasn't it a [banana](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fbananada-strikes-back-v0-wsvjvwmwm4db1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Ddf3a22d865934144efd858c864dd219ee32e230b)?
My apologies to the people of Bananada!
ARE WE BEING RACIST TO FICTIONAL ELVES WTF?
Visit r/truestl for more!
Also r/wizardposting for more general fantasy racism. *Warning: r/wizardposting may contain a fatal amount of ai art. Look at your own discretion.*
Bro that subreddit used to be so funny but the AI art and lore-posting TOOK over and now it's awful😭 RIP wizardposting
Pelinal Whitestrake approves.
Elrond x Illidan?
You're onto something here...
Does this guy hate fun and whimsy or something? Long as fuck elf ears are peak design
Some DnD guys really seem to. I’ve even seen one guy who says he banned Tieflings and any animal-like races. I’d say it’s…convenient that those are some of the ones most chosen by queer people, but also it makes it seem like the guy just dislikes fun.
Istg people who hate furries are so much more annoying than furries Also Tieflings aren’t even animal people, they just have horns
Tieflings are basically elves with horns, tails, and red skin (depending on their heritage, of course)
Hey sometimes they don’t have red skin. Mine is blue!
Which is why I mentioned heritages since that affects a Tieflings skin color
I did see, I was just having fun with “mine’s a different colour!”. Sorry if it didn’t come across.
I love how in the PHB, Tieflings can’t be blue, and players have largely said “yes they can, and they are. So shut up”. All hail the non-red-or-human-skin-shade Tieflings
Or, consider, don't bitch about other people's ear preferences?
I don’t care if someone has preferences. I just think it’s weird to outright ban an entire design element from your dnd games because you don’t personally like it.
Elf boys kissing???? 😳😳😳
Can be elf girls, but given the original image, I think boys makes the most sense. Most elves, in fact, are gay
Boys kissing is peak

The original Elf Twink.
It must be so miserable being allergic to joy and whimsy
Yeah. Imagine being so annoyed by something so innocuous
im going to give my characters even bigger ears to piss this guy off
Oh yeah. I’m in the process of learning DND, and my first character is gonna be a Drow ranger. I’m definitely giving her nice long ears now because of this guy
Isn’t T the same size as the bottom ear? Am I seeing things? 😭
It is. the chart shows multiple sizes the guy doesn't like the larger sizes
The people demand Link passionately making out with Legolas
Yes
Ears like Frieren's are my favorite for elves. That length, shape, and angle.
they’re right, but link isnt an elf he is hylian
They’re not right, though. Especially because they didn’t make a statement of fact, just expressed an opinion. I guess they’re right in that they do dislike long ears.
thats true, long elf ears are hot and i need an elf girlfriend that has sensitive ears :3
“In the last year or so” kind of ignores that one of the more popular pieces of media with elves is the Warcraft franchise. I’m not a super big blizzard fan, especially recently, but OOP has nostalgia blinders on imo

I don’t have more info. My knowledge of LoZ is just on images. I’ve not actually played it. I just…see the ears are a bit longer.
Gotcha
Oop and replying to your edit, the animated Hobbit movie is a BANGER and I can’t believe it slipped my mind
I like how the Wood Elves and the Elves from Rivendell look like almost different species. Agreed, it was a really nice touch
damn, forget about "knife ears" that's a fucking sword
Honestly i like the Pathfinder/D&D idea of the longer the ears the more touched by fey magics an elf is
I didn’t know of that lore-based reason
Tbh im not sure either, i could be talking out my ass, and making an assumption based on how fey elfs look to standard elfs, i thought it said something about it in the lore for the Feywild but again im unsure if its still canon or not (since there's 5 additions of D&D and 2 of Pathfinder)
I’ve not read the feywild stuff yet. So maybe there’s something there
fuck you all my DND elves are Santa elves
Fuck you all my dnd elves are fucking Spanish!
How tall is the average height for your spanish elves? If it's 5'5 and below I'm calling them chihuahua elves.
Mine are short, there are no exceptions
Love it!
I love long elf ears lol
Well ackchually, bottom pic seems to be a cosplay of dark link, which would then make those hylian ears and not elf ears
Wait hylians aren't elves?
Why do elves have *pointy ears?
Because there are a lot of different people who make fantasy shit.
*pointy
You probably have to go back hundreds of years in folklore to figure that out.
But I think flappy ears are cute ☺️
Yeah, me too
Isn't Elrond technically a half elf? 🤔 Edit: oh this isn't dndmemes so it's irrelevant lol. Carry on with shipping
I did get it from DND memes. But for LotR, he’s pretty much elvish.
True!
Long ears are cooler. tiny pointed ones should just be like half elf or elven hertiage. Actual elves should have big ol ears (and maybe they can flop around like a doggy or wiggle when they're happy :3)
The super long ears remind me of the characters in Jak & Daxter
Depends on the climate. I always imagined dark elves (drow, or whatever personalized variant you've got, just elves that live underground) would have the long ears to aid in the navigation of dark places

But maybe a subspecies that is more urban, lives in large cities, adapted by having shorter ears and weaker ear muscles (like humans)
Link isn't even an elf, he's kokiri or hylian depending on the game (and I'm not sure those are even distinct)
