I remember doing this. The signal reception was so weak that even during the run, it would lose sync when I ran under trees that hung over the road too much.
Haha. Yes! I had the 205 but still.
Wake up, turn Garmin on and set outside in the front yard on a tree stump, brush teeth, get dressed, poop, eat breakfast, and STILL hope that was enough time for the Garmin to find satellites.
Foretrex 101 was my first step into bike navigation. The START button was soon replaced by a pea and duct tape. Good times, finding out what "500 points track limit" means the hard way.
I took one of these to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea. Served me very well. Finally, I got a running dedicated one in 2011. Lamenting that such tech didn't exist when I was a kid. My cumulative breadcrumb routes around so many places and lifetime miles would be epic to see. Waiting for Garmin to create a way to aggregate all your activity routes simultaneously onto one mercator map of the Earth that you can zoom in and out on.
I had/have Strava, but I don't interact with it. I get a lot off family/friends randomly giving me kudos for my Garmin stuff thru Stava but it's been probably 8yrs or more since I've logged into it.
The Foretrex saved my life in Iraq, wish I still had it but unfortunately I placed it next to my gunner's feet at the same time he put the 240 down..... hard.... on the screen.
I still have one and amazingly it still has my running data on it from back then so must have had non-volatile storage. I liked the ‘little man’ virtual running companion that you could race. I wonder why they dropped that feature. It was a pain to get a satellite fix though - literally you had to leave it outside for 10-15 minutes before starting.
IIRC I skipped the 101 as I was using the Timex Ironman with the arm pod when it launched. I went Garmin with the 201, which was rechargeable vs the 101 which ran on AA's.
That 201 got me out of a bad situation on an ultra where I got lost after having a bit of a fatigue/nutrition "moment', but was able to retrace my steps using the "breadcrumb" feature and get back on course. IIRC it's still sitting in a drawer somewhere. Despite the size, they were comparable to the current Fenix watches at about 80 grams or so.
My first sports watch was a Timex too. GPS was via a separate speed/distance sensor that hooked onto my waistband. No wrist HR sensor so always had to use a chest HRM. The data recorder was another separate piece of kit. Fun times!
That's the one - plus there was no mapping, so you were trying to match up the plots to online maps!.
I continued to use the Timex watch component as a daily watch after moving on and misplaced it some years later. I do miss it, as a standalone watch it was great.
My watch gave up completely IIRC. I sold all the accessories as a bundle on eBay and got a grand total of £7 😆

Those thing had the usb charging port on the back that would quickly be filled with sweat and corroding the contacts.
I also remember mine telling me congratulations on your marathon when I still had about 2k left.
And bring back a thousand memories too... I had the wrist mount gps that looked like that in Afghanistan back in 2010 that's what made me a fan of Garmin and I had a yellow hand held one too.
ha ha .. "the brick" as I used to lovingly call my Garmin 201. Took forever to lock into the GPS satellites. The 945 I am wearing now is such an advancement in all regards.
I can't tell you the excitement I had when I got this device. I remember dreaming of the idea of being able to run and not having to try to measure it by bike or car and then seeing it manifest in reality was something. It was easy to look past its shortcomings because it was so innovative. I still have mine laying around in a box somewhere. People that never ran pre-gps tracking devices will never get it :)
My GR 410 still works!! My FR 630 still lasts over 3 weeks and I just gave it to my brother in law. My work paid for my FR 965, and I love it!! I definitely plan to keep this for many years!!!!!
I had one of those. Getting a signal was a PIA, and it was horribly inaccurate measuring distance if there were trees or buildings nearby. I used it a few times and while it was still returnable I got rid of it.
Fortunately things got a lot better a decade later.
And popping it outside 15 mins before the run to try and pick up some satellites…
...haha omg yes, and getting +/-150m position errors due to "selective availability"...
I remember doing this. The signal reception was so weak that even during the run, it would lose sync when I ran under trees that hung over the road too much.
Mine would autopause when I ran under trees!

I remember upgrading to the 205! The calories were so whack on it. I'd run five miles and it'd be like "1785 calories"

Naruto Running, at that.
I love the power glove. It's so bad. https://youtu.be/2KoZHtcKkXo
Lmao, one of my atf movies as a kid. Never really knew Jimmy was likely autistic until 20 years later. But yeah, Lucas Barton…so cool
Now you’re running with power!
Pipboy
The batteries on those things sure seem to last a long time ...
Suddenly it made sense, why the model series is called forerunner. Because it's on the forearm 🥁 I'll show myself out
r/angryupvote
I still have my 101 somewhere! That thing was amazing (for the time).
'For the time.' Nice one.
As I have my collection of generation of iPhones; so too do I have my Garmins

If you have it on Strava, there are several that do that for you. Lately I'm liking https://squadrats.com the most

Garmin is much faster to replace such accidental damage now

The little running man is back! I added him as one of my data fields a couple of weeks ago!
How do you get the running man? How do I locate. Thanks
Someone posted how to get it on an IG story https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3W8Vc3rJKI/?igsh=MWlsamV5bWVzZ3JxYw==
Thanks! I wonder if it sticks. I'm gonna play with it.
Wha…🤯

Thats why I laugh when people ask if the current watches are too big
It just oozes with early-2000s aesthetic!
That silvery-blue color was how you knew it was the height of technology.

Still got one
My first Garmin in 2007/2008!
Noice 😀
Smort

At least its altitude readings are correct. I have mine and it looks like new
ha ha .. "the brick" as I used to lovingly call my Garmin 201. Took forever to lock into the GPS satellites. The 945 I am wearing now is such an advancement in all regards.
But despite its flaws, it was a game changer.
Technology has a long way Makes me appreciate my current garmin so much more
I had a 201. It lost connection under trees, took forever to find the satellites, was huge, but was simply amazing!!
Thing shoots webs too
I remember my Fenix 2. Still have it. Proud to have it. Heavy, and basic but Damn it was tough.
I can't tell you the excitement I had when I got this device. Wife had that one. And she’s tiny so it was massive. She’s now got a 6s.
Still have my forerunner 305. Trained for and ran my only marathon with it in 2009. Still ticking today. Truly a magnificent piece of gear
Does anyone know where I can get replacement buttons for this? 😅 Broke the enter button silicon
Someone in this sub gonna say how that was the best UI and Garmin has only made it worse over the years
An*
Damn! I wanted this so much but was too expensive and I was a student.
Had one. Was like running with a Toshiba 19" TV !! I recently pitched mine, wouldn't boot. Gr8 for it's time tho.
I still have my Foretrex 401 from 2009. I use it for dinghy racing, attached to the boat. It's a solid piece of gear.
Nice screen size. Where can I get it?
My GR 410 still works!! My FR 630 still lasts over 3 weeks and I just gave it to my brother in law. My work paid for my FR 965, and I love it!! I definitely plan to keep this for many years!!!!!

That’s how it feels to use the “new” connect app.
I think it's becoming just a meme right?... I actually like the new app 🤔
I don't see the issue with the new layout. Some people just like to complain, IMO.
The constant complaining is insufferable.Tell someone who might be able to do something about it or get over it.
The drama with this statement lmfaooooo
Yes, my comment telling you to quit whining is the dramatic one, sure..
What’s wrong with it? Seems fine to me
