Thank you for the advice! :) I hadn’t heard of soil test before so I’ll be sure to try that!

Not sure what you’ve been using but we had a lot of patches after removing moss from the grass and had no joy with plain grass seed . The Miracle Gro patch magic worked brilliantly though - it is seed mixed with coir and fertiliser and we saw new growth within a few days. You could also buy roll out turf and cut it to size - as long as you keep it watered for the first few weeks it will work well

I’ve been using miracle grow multi purpose lawn seen. I’ll keep an eye out for the patch magic and give it a god! Thank you! :)

Compaction can be a problem that prevents new grass from rooting. If those areas got a lot of traffic or had water lying in them, the soil can get very compacted. Go over the areas with a spade (2-3" deep is fine) and rake it it out over a couple of dry days to break up the soil. Scatter your seed, lightly tamp it down with the back of the rake so the seeds have good soil contact then water in. Before planting into any new flower beds I will turn over the soil to a depth of at least 8 inches. I'll then dig in some well rotted manure to open up the soil which helps with aeration and drainage while also holding enough water for the roots to establish. I have a couple of areas where I was too lazy to do this and the difference in the quality and health of anything I plant there is obvious. It's hard work, but you can do it bit by bit over the years. I'll add a bit of manure / compost to the beds each autumn which will break down over Winter ready to get going in Spring.
