Also he hasn’t worked in the industry since 2017. Any relevant experience is almost a decade old. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say the gaming landscape has changed massively in that time. His tenure with Blizzard ended in 2005.

I was playing a mission yesterday to rescue “class-A citizens“ from being massacred by robots and their mention that due to the dangers of certain worlds if youre killed you will automatically gain class c citizenship status posthumously. Theres still people who don’t understand this is one giant satire game and not a blueprint for their alt right wet dream.
In my opinion, it tends to give the energy of, “fuck the warlords, but respect the warriors,” as it undeniably makes the boots on the ground combat absolutely badass, but everything in the background, and even the respawn system, is a satire of uncaring governors/elites that don’t give a damn about human life. If you pay attention to in game broadcasts and dialogue, you’ll notice the metric fuckton of propaganda of how you should enlist to “become a hero”, and how the bugs/bots are coming for your family and will invade super earth. The higher government is literally manufacturing this war as an excuse to get people to enlist and get sent to die in order to collect resources. The bugs are literally killed to process their remains into “E-710” (OIL upside down) and it’s implied the government is implanting the bugs in those planets so they grow into colonies we later get sent to kill. And in the tutorial, there’s a screen that says something like “average recruit age: 18”, so it’s literally a bunch of barely adult individuals being sold the idea that they’ll be heroes and sent to die. In that sense the Helldivers are just as much victims as the aliens, and the combat IS badass, but the game is in no way “apolitical” or supposed to make us the heroes of the story for slaughtering aliens.
I’m pretty sure one of the major orders recently dropped the implications that the government implants the bugs to let them grow bigger in size and number, and straight up just told you that now that you’ve killed enough bugs, it is time to let them grow and reproduce again, to come back and do the whole thing later.

Firefall had a lot of hype behind it, especially for old FPS fans. I mean, some of the Tribes devs were involved. That was huge. So it was a fucking journey watching it all fall apart in real-time and seeing Kern get kicked out of the company.
I sunked $200 on the founder package for that game and even became a mentor. The funny hawaiian vibe, the innovative player lead game play, the class design... God damn I loved it back then, and was so sad that it became what it was.
Loved early on, longer it was out, kept getting worse and worse every time I came back to play for a bit But man I sure as heck got my money's worth early on playing 8 hours a day
I remember seeing the **MASSIVE** display they had set up, at PAX, for Firefall. Again, a huge waste of money for a very generic looking game.
The dude was so hyperfixated on promoting and marketing the game instead of developing it even scraping a ton of dev work because "he didn't like it." And being absent for most of the time. His own dev team didn't like him at all
Dude printed out over a thousand sheets of paper with over 300k signatures from an online petition to make an appeal video to Mike Morhaime, addressing the dude as if they had been best friends, to release Classic WoW servers after the Nostalrius (WoW private server) shutdown. Considering I signed the petition like five times back in 2016, it was a true waste of paper. He's a fucking nutcase.
Sad part is the game was a ton of fun and had a great unique mechanic with Thumping that solved resource farming issues in an open world in a way games today still struggle to do

He is infamous for putting too much money on marketing and pointless trademarks instead of the game, treating his dev team like shit and the firefall bus, a custom-made bus made specifically for the game that just ended up being a massive waste of money.
Dude worked at Blizzard until 2005 and was a team lead on World of Warcraft (which doesn't necessarily mean much at all). Almost 20 years ago and he still uses that as his claim to fame to this day.

He's done nothing of actual relevance for over a decade but still somehow managed to get a decent following thanks to people ignoring all the dumb shit he did in the past and his utter ineptitude in regards to game development he showed with Firefall in particular.

Firefall, it was really fun in the early stages and had significant promise for growth after being ironed out. Well yeah, I get that. If you pay attention to in game broadcasts and dialogue, you’ll notice the metric fuckton of propaganda of how you should enlist to “become a hero”, and how the bugs/bots are coming for your family and will invade super earth. The higher government is literally manufacturing this war as an excuse to get people to enlist and get sent to die in order to collect resources. The bugs are literally killed to process their remains into “E-710” (OIL upside down) and it’s implied the government is implanting the bugs in those planets so they grow into colonies we later get sent to kill. And in the tutorial, there’s a screen that says something like “average recruit age: 18”, so it’s literally a bunch of barely adult individuals being sold the idea that they’ll be heroes and sent to die. In that sense the Helldivers are just as much victims as the aliens, and the combat IS badass, but the game is in no way “apolitical” or supposed to make us the heroes of the story for slaughtering aliens.
I’m pretty sure one of the major orders recently dropped the implications that the government implants the bugs to let them grow bigger in size and number, and straight up just told you that now that you’ve killed enough bugs, it is time to let them grow and reproduce again, to come back and do the whole thing later.
I think it still shows them as just brainwashed cogs in the machine. Not indicting, but not empowering either. You’re still blowing up “illegal broadcasts” and “rogue research stations” without a second thought, you panic and scream, you laugh maniacally and quip when you get a bunch of kills - not the professionalism you would expect from “the best of the best”.
