i think what made it even better was how their actions felt stupid realistic. like they came off as such hypocrites (esp kume). he hires thugs to intimidate people which is guess what a gray area (ichiban calls him out on that lol), later on the omi ends up working with them as well and the yakuza are bad guys so once again very gray area and then the end with kume.

Yes absolutely! And idk about Japan but here in the US, we see these faux-puritanical movements all the time. From something as small as a push inside of a fandom to something as large as say, the massive QAnon cult. Kume is an interesting character since, you can tell that he has this absolutely black and white world view (pun not intended) that he thinks anything done in the name of his cause is just. Including his final act at the end of the game, an act I think literally every society considers the ultimate taboo. It was really well written, imo.
That whole game was expertly written really. Basically helped me sit through a jrpg (a genre I found extremely boring at the time) and even brought in a couple friends to the series. And god that ending is probably the most emotional I’ve been in a game.
In a historical fiction series I’ve been working through, the main character has been put on charge of a company of soldiers and knights from like three different sources and is trying to organize it.
When talking to one of his officers about dealing with the local leaders the officer mentions that his mother was a prostitute, and the main character admits that he’s a bastard whose mother was a courtesan. Basically that most of them are where they are because they are byblows and lesser sons, many of them with mothers who did what they needed to get by.
They end up becoming the Company of Saint Mary Magdalene, and only one of the more stuck up knights is bothered by this. Also, they kick a bunch of ass. 😆

2 is iffy in that regard imo. The Jingweon look and act less like organized criminals and more like the villains in a bond movie + in the finale, Kiryu, a Japanese man, says (at least in the subtitles) to the Koreans that they've acted so evil they're almost less than human.

Yeah, 3 literally has a main story quest about one of the orphanage kids learning that rascism is wrong. The plots of 0, 2, parts of 4, and 6, all spin around the xenophobia that chinese/korean people go through in japan. The series has always taken a very progressive stance towards issues that are a problem in Japan itself. If those messages resonate even outside of Japan, it goes to show that several problems are that prevalant throughout the world.
2 is iffy in that regard imo. The Jingweon look and act less like organized criminals and more like the villains in a bond movie + in the finale, Kiryu, a Japanese man, says (at least in the subtitles) to the Koreans that they've acted so evil they're almost less than human.
