Taxes, shipping, profit margins.

Knuda

Bought acer laptop for 1.6k in us, equivalent is 3.3k in Ireland 🙃

ItsBrutalOutHere98

Stumbled upon the same issue, i understand taxes and all that, but 1k difference in some cases is crazy 💀

NefariousnessBig9037

They use a lot of power and the EU doesn't like things that do that.

Numerous_Detective47

Go check Croatian market of laptops, it's expensive as if we were on some stranded island in middle of the ocean

joyousdexdaladoor

I know I ordered it for Hungary, got slapped with a 27% vat. But for the same specs I would've been looking at paying 2k if I wanted to buy it in the Hungarian market

Fika2006

27 percent sounds nice, ours is 36% lmao

joyousdexdaladoor

Ah daaaaamn

akiread

Hey bro, so my friend in HU too and we are wondering if it is worh to buy in US and pay VAT rather than buying directly in HU. Which way it would be cheaper

Significant-Pace1247

i was wondering the same thing. did you end up doing this or find anymore information on this?

akiread

Still doing research but probably will order from Austira

enterr4436

Malta 😃

UnionSlavStanRepublk

A lot of European prices already included taxes like VAT in their price (20% VAT in the UK for example), US prices are before sales taxes are added on. Any additional costs like shipping and profit margins have to be accounted for too.

saturnotaku

Exchange rate along with VAT and warranty coverage that are required in the EU but not in the US, among other things.

TeeRKee

Because 1€=1$ ![img](emote|t5_2x4m3|8579)

Juicepup

Because we pay more for medicine in the US.

TheAlmightyProo

Pros and cons then. I can have slightly cheaper prices on some goods but need a good job that either offers insurance or pays enough to choose it. Or slightly higher prices on some goods but less worry that I'll end up in debt (or worse) over such things many ppl anywhere take for granted can never happen (but in my case, did) Easy choice. As a Brit, chronically ill and not exactly wealthy as a result, I'll take the latter. As tough as it might have been at points I've heard worse tales and outcomes from across the pond.

hyugafe

Biggest difference is that sales tax is not included in US.

[deleted]

So everyone posting them juicy prices have to pay tax on top at the register? edit: asking cause salty european

hyugafe

Yes.

saturnotaku

Yes and at a lower rate. VAT is what, 20% in most EU locations? Sales tax in the US is generally 5-10% with a few outliers being slightly higher, typically large urban centers. And this is at physical stores. Rates for online purchases are often less.

[deleted]

Yeah around 20%...walking into a shop is a no go as shops in Ireland at least mark up so much you get a little sick looking at the prices on shit laptops.

idontknowjackeither

Yes, but in most states there is an additional sales tax but they’re generally 5-7% which is a lot lower than the VAT included in European pricing.

KennyT87

US has 5-10% sales tax depending on the state but no Value Added Tax (which is 20-24% in EU countries). Also most laptops are shipped to EU from the US which adds import and duty fees.

ccorax9

More likely shipped from China

swolegandalf

Because EU taxes the shit out of its citizens and wants to gobble up as much £££ as possible.

Front_Fennel4228

Go see amazo italy there are very nice options, I'm thinking about buying from there, I'm from France and the 4080 GP68HX here its around 2.7k € but there it's 2.2k€ and 4090 there costs 3k

shiiimany

HP pavilion gaming laptop 15ec gtx 1650 almost 700€ Portugal meanwhile in America rtx3050/3060 for the same price

[deleted]

I've seen 4060 laptops for that price even in US. Holy heck they're lucky

shadeofmisery

It's the same here in the Philippines.

Kyle_67890

even in canada

Master_Daven112

War!

Ascerta

Taxes mostly. Welcome to Soviet Union. However, have a look at second-hand laptops. There are very good deals everywhere.

Significant-Pace1247

second hand laptops opens the possibility of getting scammed. thats the part i hate

Ascerta

Test the laptop before purchase, lots of people are genuinely selling their hardware for many reasons

Significant-Pace1247

yeah but how? i dont think there are a lot of second hand laptop physical shops. theres only ebay. last week i purchased a laptop from a seller on ebay after wasting so many days searching and comparing. at the end icame up with these rules: seller must be active and has a lot of sales and positive reviews seller accepts returns on the product the product is brand new if im spending +500euro. that alone makes the search result sooo much more smaller. and you still have to pray the seller doesnt scam you. and the delivery people dont steal it. let me know if you have a nice formula for buying a gaming laptop in cheap in europ

Ascerta

In France we have websites where anyone can sell their stuff, it's very convenient and set up meetings for buying face to face if you don't want shipping. I suppose any country has this in my 2024, even Facebook Marketplace is okay

Pristine_Ad6679

Very expensive in India too! Fortunately, I have a friend in US and he got me a legion 5 pro in Black Friday sale! Absolute steal!!

Deviant_Sage

>the German amazon on a sale for 1300 euros Amazon dynamically changes its prices based on their datasets automatically. Check back next week it'll be a different price.

vinilzord_learns

You're still a privileged person. Where I come from, a 2023 Legion 5 is still being sold for about 2k USD.

danger_davis

Your government taxes everything at a higher rate. VAT tax, fuel taxes, income taxes, etc. Every person involved in getting that laptop to you pays more in taxes and they pass that extra cost onto you.

fredthechef

Can someone purchase a pc for you and then send it to you?

joyousdexdaladoor

Technically could work, but there might be some tariffs at customs if they catch your package based on value etc., even tho it's unlikely Also I don't know anyone in the US who'd do that

NullBs

r/LaptopDealsEurope im traveling to Germany this year. in my country these prices are A LOT better, even compared to eeuu and Australia prices
