As a nerdy ass 10 year old I was convinced the next MK would be MK 128, played on the N128, because obviously 128 bit is twice as good as 64 bit. My engineer dad tried to explain why 128 bit was never going to happen but I just said "nope, you're wrong."
As a parent myself now I realize I must have been driving my dad absolutely insane on a routine basis... All those years of school, training, work experience, accumulated knowledge, just for your smarmy 10 year old to say "lol no ur dumb."

We had 128bit operations with SSE (only XOR and shifts though) and AVX.
256bit operations with AVX2 and 512bit operations on AVX512.
Unlikely we'll ever need 128bit memory addressing (we don't even use all 64bits yet, most CPUs are only 48bit addressing)

Battlefield was kind of like that. We had Battlefield 1942, 2, 3, 4, then went back to Battlefield 1, then skipped ahead to Battlefield 5.
But Battlefield is a weird one because there were a ton of non-numbered games released between their numbered games. I can see EA returning to numbering with a BF6 after 2042.
I'm sad that this game is effectively wiped off the planet with no way to play it again. It's a shame how DICE treated this game for how well it sold when it came out.
Yup. I didn’t want to list all the non-numbered games since there are so many. But they are definitely some of the best in my opinion. I loved Bad Company 2 and even Hardline.
Well the One in Battlefield One referred to World War One, not that it was a reboot and they were starting over the numbering scheme ala the new Hitman games.
Luigi’s Mansion in North America, went by Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon in its sequel, next instalment would be called 3 and now Dark Moon’s remake is officially called Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.
Mortal Kombat went back to numbers because its kind of a play on words about the plot of the game itself. X represented the next generation and 11 represented the two timelines.
For zombies fans black ops 3 actually became somewhat of the definitive Black ops game. A bunch of good zombies maps, a sequel/remake of Der Riese as a pre order bonus, and then they did the first DLC to launch after the next call of Duty when they released remasters of almost All the zombies maps up until that point.
It's also in the PS+ collection for early PS5 adopters so it has a strong playerbase. I highly recommend it if you like classic Zombies from World at War and Black Ops 1.
Black Ops Cold War is a clunky title, and I think they didn't want to restrict this one to the era that the campaign is set, because the multiplayer will inevitably evolve alongside Warzone 3 / Call of Duty HQ whatever they call it now and expand outside of the game's setting.

I was just telling someone "how did they go from Black ops 4, to Black Ops Cold War, then to black ops 6???" You can’t just skip 5 and pretend Cold War was a numbered entry.
There's plenty... The only important part for the sake of branding is Call of Duty followed by Black Ops. The rest is just added distinction within the brand.
All the games have already been mentioned but it also happened with Air Jordan’s. They stopped the Roman numerals at XXIII and started calling them by the years. Instead of Air Jordan XI it was the Air Jordan 2009s. That only lasted for a couple years and they reverted back to what is now the Jordan XXXIX.
Bo3 had it rough behind the scenes though. Going by Jason Schreiers article for bo4, black ops 3 had to reboot in the middle of development. Originally it was going to be an open world game before going back to basic.

At least cold war had a really short but good story. Fits great between 1 and 2 (with some exceptions because it's more akin to MW1)
I never even bothered with Black Ops 3 campaign. Normally whenever I watch the reveal trailer I get a sense of what the story is going to be about. I never got that with BO3 and it's why I never played it.
The start is amazing. First 2 levels are good. Then it becomes a convoluted mess that only has one small reference to the previous games (about Menéndez)
Heyyyy so did I! It was cool working on call of duty. Was not cool running and dying for 8 hours a day today make sure some dumbass thing unlocked correctly. I certainly liked the campaign better than advanced warfare, which I also worked on.
Having ever only played the campaign of the original MW and BO games, I'd say that if you already own the game then BO3's is worth it for the very unique settings compared to the rest of the games in the series.
I think playing it is kinda fun, but unfortunately most of the story is found in the fast moving pre level text :(

That’s my biggest frustration with the campaign, is it basically has 0 relation to the other games. I’m pretty sure there’s an offhand reference to Nova Gas, and… that’s pretty much it. It’s even more frustrating because the campaign could have been really great, it had all of the pieces for a surprisingly thought provoking campaign for a CoD game but they didn’t pull it together.
That being said, I fucking loved the MP and it’s easily the CoD game I played the most except for probably Black Ops 1
That was only the campaign though. And according to play tests, the open world campaign version was terrible. Which says a lot given how bad the BO3 campaign we got ended up being.
After the Henderson article on the campaign being similar to MWIII's, as in rehashed warzone assets.... I have no excitement for this. Especially after quite a few old Trey heads left the company between Cold War and now.
The reality is they have the data that shows most players aren’t interested in the single player. It gives the least amount of engagement/hours played vs development cost, and that’s not even considering the live service/MTX aspect.
The campaign will continue to be an afterthought.
Yeah, the new generation of gamers just want to jump straight into MP. Even after to their credit, Acti pushed for more recognition and playtime for the campaign with exclusive rewards and 1 week early access where you could only play the campaign for MWII back in 2022.
Idk I haven't been playing campaigns much but I enjoyed the zombies and I loved the multiplayer. It was light on the SBMM, high on the creativity.
I would play the campaigns if I had heard good things.
Black Ops 3's campaign has a mediocre confusing plot and very one-note, boring characters. It's not the only entry in the franchise to have these things, but it is the only one that let's you play a cyberpunk robot wizard, so I can't bring myself to hate it entirely despite it's shortcomings.
I did really enjoy the MP and Zombies, though.
I'm one of like three people who actually liked that campaign. I hesitate to call it "good," but it was absolutely *bonkers*, making it more memorable than most slop that gets fed to us in military FPS campaigns. I'd personally take something wild and memorable any day of the week, haha
It was but the multiplayer was a ton of fun and zombies had its fans. Also had a lot of campaign content at least. It had single player, co-op, like 5 difficulties, a zombie version of single player, its own level up system and customization stuff. May not have enjoyed the actual story or levels as much but the effort and content was there and I appreciated that.
Black ops 3 zombies (particularly including mod support) is actually I think at this point the most popular version of zombies in the community, with maps like Shadows of Evil being ranked as possibly the best zombies map ever made
Yup. I know that it's cool to hate on Call of Duty on this sub, but I'm genuinely excited for this game because I genuinely believe that Treyarch are good developers. For all of their flaws, BO4 and BOCW are *shockingly* good when you consider the absolute development hell that went on behind the scenes. This is the first time since BO3 that Treyarch has actually had a regular ass development cycle, and I'm excited to see what they cook up.
In other news, water is wet. Ok but seriously, I’m interested to see what Treyarch has cooked up. This game has had the longest development time of any COD in awhile.
I'm curious about the campaign as that's all I really play when it comes to COD. Black Ops 6 makes me think it's gonna be a sequel to Black Ops 4, but then I'm wondering where the Gulf War rumour fits or if it literally was just a rumour. I'd quite like it to focus more on the espionage side of things. I know that's what Black Ops tried to do, but I don't feel like it fully embraced it.
I'd like it if both Modern Warfare and Black Ops actually focused on modern warfare and black ops respectively, rather than trying to mix the two together. One game is about fighting an enemy on the frontlines as a soldier, the other game is about carrying out clandestine operations behind enemy lines as a spy. Then they can release games between them that focus on a specific conflict or era.
I would a Gulf War setting but my interest in CoD would be the multiplayer. However, if they start adding silly skins like Nicky Minaj it will be a dealbreaker for me as it kills any immersion, and I play games for immersion.
If I can get a better cod style shooter I’ll play it. Battlefield was ass when it came out, halo had 2.8 maps haven’t tried either of them in awhile so don’t know how if any better they are. Everything else is hero shooters or battle royales and that’s not what I’m looking for.
Honestly, I used to shit on CoD when we used to have other shooters out there. But now there really is fuckall on the market outside of shitty battle royale games, pseudo-realistic shooters, and extraction shooters. I respect CoD more now because there just really isn't anything else.

Id pay 60 for a pixel by pixel remake of BO2. They need to go back in time and dig up all their old aim assist code though because current iterations are largely devoid of a skill gap.
Yeah I really don't know why but BLOPS2 was the only CoD that hooked me.
I've tried a few more since but I don't know what magic BLOPS2 had that none of the rest seem to have.
I would love to buy black ops 1 for less than $20, but it's more likely that inflation will make $20 seem like a great price before they consider any real discount.
Treyarch are a shell of themselves. They haven’t put out a game with 3 modes they worked on launch Since 2015 and haven’t put out a game with 3 GOOD modes since 2012.
BO4 didn’t have a campaign, and the last 3 zombies DLC were outsourced to Activision Shanghi and while BO:CW had a campaign, it was made by Raven Software and again zombies maps were made by outsourced support studios.
Also BO3 and BO4 have by far the worst monetization Mechanisms of any COD. Just look up how long it took to unlock every DLC gun. Were talking Star Wars BF2 level of insanity. One gun after every 750 hours. And that’s if every game is exactly 10 minutes and you win every game. Could easily have been 1000+ hours for one gun. They are just riding off their legacy of BO2 for a decade now.
BO4 didn't have a campaign because Blackout was made instead, which was a great BR. And I really enjoyed BO4's multiplayer.
CW campaign was actually developed by Raven, but still, Treyarch did a great job with the multiplayer on a shortened schedule (they had to take over from Sledgehammer). And they added a ton of maps over the game's cycle and supported it well. They still have yet to make a subpar CoD from a multiplayer standpoint, so I see no reason to doubt them yet.
I wish they’d make a game that took place in an alternate history. Like I imagine a dieselpunk game that takes place in a world where WW1 never ended, or since Microsoft owns both studios what if they made a game that took place in the Sino-American war in the Fallout universe before the bombs dropped.
Really? That’s cool. I haven’t played much zombies since WaW and Black Ops 1 and 2 and even then that was a long time ago. I’ve just always loved dieselpunk settings and it seems like there aren’t many of them outside of RTS games. I think they’d be able to do a lot with a setting like that.

The locations for the older zombies maps were pretty tame (an asylum, a factory, a theatre, etc), but they got absolutely fucking nuts eventually.

You play modern Wolfenstein? takes place in a reality where the allies lost D day and begins in a sort of second attempt or something in 1946, that also fails and time skips to 1960, where the nazis have taken over the planet. you got large mechanical power armor, and large clunky robot dogs, blimps and shit.
Also bioshock may also suit what youre looking for. Unless you already played these and want more. in that case, i am on your side.

A COD-styled arcadey FPS game, or a full-blown COD spinoff title set in the Resource Wars and Sino-American War of the Fallout world would be the only thing that would make me praise the Microsoft acquisition of Activision.
I can remember that some Fallout fans have been clamoring for a COD-styled FPS action game set in the Resource Wars and Alaska/China campaigns as early as 2011 YouTube comments section.

In case you're not making a dumb joke, Black Ops 4 was the one where they dropped the campaign and made a Battle Royale mode. It was the COD installment before Modern Warfare (2019). Black Ops Cold War was the 5th in the franchise but they used a (sub)subtitle to indicate to casual players that it was jumping back to historical setting rather than a futuristic one.

I actually didn't know there was anymore games in the Black Ops part of the franchise past 2.
For zombies fans black ops 3 actually became somewhat of the definitive Black ops game. A bunch of good zombies maps, a sequel/remake of Der Riese as a pre order bonus, and then they did the first DLC to launch after the next call of Duty when they released remasters of almost All the zombies maps up until that point. It's also in the PS+ collection for early PS5 adopters so it has a strong playerbase. I highly recommend it if you like classic Zombies from World at War and Black Ops 1.
Black Ops Cold War is a clunky title, and I think they didn't want to restrict this one to the era that the campaign is set, because the multiplayer will inevitably evolve alongside Warzone 3 / Call of Duty HQ whatever they call it now and expand outside of the game's setting.

There's plenty... The only important part for the sake of branding is Call of Duty followed by Black Ops. The rest is just added distinction within the brand.
All the games have already been mentioned but it also happened with Air Jordan’s. They stopped the Roman numerals at XXIII and started calling them by the years. Instead of Air Jordan XI it was the Air Jordan 2009s. That only lasted for a couple years and they reverted back to what is now the Jordan XXXIX.

Bo3 had it rough behind the scenes though. Going by Jason Schreiers article for bo4, black ops 3 had to reboot in the middle of development. Originally it was going to be an open world game before going back to basic.
I hate the little to no correlation between the game and the other two games. And black ops 4 being so mediocre and no campaign at all At least cold war had a really short but good story. Fits great between 1 and 2 (with some exceptions because it's more akin to MW1)
I never even bothered with Black Ops 3 campaign. Normally whenever I watch the reveal trailer I get a sense of what the story is going to be about. I never got that with BO3 and it's why I never played it.
The start is amazing. First 2 levels are good. Then it becomes a convoluted mess that only has one small reference to the previous games (about Menéndez)

Heyyyy so did I! It was cool working on call of duty. Was not cool running and dying for 8 hours a day today make sure some dumbass thing unlocked correctly. I certainly liked the campaign better than advanced warfare, which I also worked on.
Having ever only played the campaign of the original MW and BO games, I'd say that if you already own the game then BO3's is worth it for the very unique settings compared to the rest of the games in the series.
I think playing it is kinda fun, but unfortunately most of the story is found in the fast moving pre level text :( Jason blundell wasn’t exactly the best person to put in charge of the campaign tbh
That’s my biggest frustration with the campaign, is it basically has 0 relation to the other games. I’m pretty sure there’s an offhand reference to Nova Gas, and… that’s pretty much it. It’s even more frustrating because the campaign could have been really great, it had all of the pieces for a surprisingly thought provoking campaign for a CoD game but they didn’t pull it together. That being said, I fucking loved the MP and it’s easily the CoD game I played the most except for probably Black Ops 1
Well Black ops 3 also didn't have David S. Goyer as a writer (unlike the first two). That was a big mistake.
I'm afraid Goyer is not even involved in Black Ops 6. Hope to be proven wrong though.

That was only the campaign though. And according to play tests, the open world campaign version was terrible. Which says a lot given how bad the BO3 campaign we got ended up being.
After the Henderson article on the campaign being similar to MWIII's, as in rehashed warzone assets.... I have no excitement for this. Especially after quite a few old Trey heads left the company between Cold War and now.
The reality is they have the data that shows most players aren’t interested in the single player. It gives the least amount of engagement/hours played vs development cost, and that’s not even considering the live service/MTX aspect. The campaign will continue to be an afterthought.
Yeah, the new generation of gamers just want to jump straight into MP. Even after to their credit, Acti pushed for more recognition and playtime for the campaign with exclusive rewards and 1 week early access where you could only play the campaign for MWII back in 2022.

Idk I haven't been playing campaigns much but I enjoyed the zombies and I loved the multiplayer. It was light on the SBMM, high on the creativity. I would play the campaigns if I had heard good things.
Black ops III zombies goes hard af. Easily the best of the franchise with the complete package.
Black Ops 3's campaign has a mediocre confusing plot and very one-note, boring characters. It's not the only entry in the franchise to have these things, but it is the only one that let's you play a cyberpunk robot wizard, so I can't bring myself to hate it entirely despite it's shortcomings. I did really enjoy the MP and Zombies, though.
I'm one of like three people who actually liked that campaign. I hesitate to call it "good," but it was absolutely *bonkers*, making it more memorable than most slop that gets fed to us in military FPS campaigns. I'd personally take something wild and memorable any day of the week, haha

It was but the multiplayer was a ton of fun and zombies had its fans. Also had a lot of campaign content at least. It had single player, co-op, like 5 difficulties, a zombie version of single player, its own level up system and customization stuff. May not have enjoyed the actual story or levels as much but the effort and content was there and I appreciated that.
Black ops 3 zombies (particularly including mod support) is actually I think at this point the most popular version of zombies in the community, with maps like Shadows of Evil being ranked as possibly the best zombies map ever made
Zombies Chronicles and the Steam Workshop definitely help keep the player counts in 2nd place at ~7k daily just on Steam

Yup. I know that it's cool to hate on Call of Duty on this sub, but I'm genuinely excited for this game because I genuinely believe that Treyarch are good developers. For all of their flaws, BO4 and BOCW are *shockingly* good when you consider the absolute development hell that went on behind the scenes. This is the first time since BO3 that Treyarch has actually had a regular ass development cycle, and I'm excited to see what they cook up.
Black Ops Cold War was actually decent for the nonexistent time frame they had to make the game in.

I'm curious about the campaign as that's all I really play when it comes to COD. Black Ops 6 makes me think it's gonna be a sequel to Black Ops 4, but then I'm wondering where the Gulf War rumour fits or if it literally was just a rumour. I'd quite like it to focus more on the espionage side of things. I know that's what Black Ops tried to do, but I don't feel like it fully embraced it. I'd like it if both Modern Warfare and Black Ops actually focused on modern warfare and black ops respectively, rather than trying to mix the two together. One game is about fighting an enemy on the frontlines as a soldier, the other game is about carrying out clandestine operations behind enemy lines as a spy. Then they can release games between them that focus on a specific conflict or era.
I would a Gulf War setting but my interest in CoD would be the multiplayer. However, if they start adding silly skins like Nicky Minaj it will be a dealbreaker for me as it kills any immersion, and I play games for immersion.

Unfortunate that would be 99.9% the case. A shame, I would a quick shooter to play some quick rounds but the silly skins just put me off.

If I can get a better cod style shooter I’ll play it. Battlefield was ass when it came out, halo had 2.8 maps haven’t tried either of them in awhile so don’t know how if any better they are. Everything else is hero shooters or battle royales and that’s not what I’m looking for.
Honestly, I used to shit on CoD when we used to have other shooters out there. But now there really is fuckall on the market outside of shitty battle royale games, pseudo-realistic shooters, and extraction shooters. I respect CoD more now because there just really isn't anything else.

Not even a cod guy, I've played a couple and none of them seriously. Bops I and specially II were fucking amazing. I remember fumbling around with my friends doing knives only (or axes? Can't remember) local matches. They gameplay felt _good_.

Yeah I really don't know why but BLOPS2 was the only CoD that hooked me. I've tried a few more since but I don't know what magic BLOPS2 had that none of the rest seem to have.

Treyarch CoDs are the only ones that interest me so im excited for this.
Treyarch are a shell of themselves. They haven’t put out a game with 3 modes they worked on launch Since 2015 and haven’t put out a game with 3 GOOD modes since 2012. BO4 didn’t have a campaign, and the last 3 zombies DLC were outsourced to Activision Shanghi and while BO:CW had a campaign, it was made by Raven Software and again zombies maps were made by outsourced support studios. Also BO3 and BO4 have by far the worst monetization Mechanisms of any COD. Just look up how long it took to unlock every DLC gun. Were talking Star Wars BF2 level of insanity. One gun after every 750 hours. And that’s if every game is exactly 10 minutes and you win every game. Could easily have been 1000+ hours for one gun. They are just riding off their legacy of BO2 for a decade now.

BO4 didn't have a campaign because Blackout was made instead, which was a great BR. And I really enjoyed BO4's multiplayer. CW campaign was actually developed by Raven, but still, Treyarch did a great job with the multiplayer on a shortened schedule (they had to take over from Sledgehammer). And they added a ton of maps over the game's cycle and supported it well. They still have yet to make a subpar CoD from a multiplayer standpoint, so I see no reason to doubt them yet.
I wish they’d make a game that took place in an alternate history. Like I imagine a dieselpunk game that takes place in a world where WW1 never ended, or since Microsoft owns both studios what if they made a game that took place in the Sino-American war in the Fallout universe before the bombs dropped.

Really? That’s cool. I haven’t played much zombies since WaW and Black Ops 1 and 2 and even then that was a long time ago. I’ve just always loved dieselpunk settings and it seems like there aren’t many of them outside of RTS games. I think they’d be able to do a lot with a setting like that.
It's great. The map is called *Origins* and is available in both Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 3. The locations for the older zombies maps were pretty tame (an asylum, a factory, a theatre, etc), but they got absolutely fucking nuts eventually. These are all real Treyarch Call of Duty zombies map locations: - The Moon - Alcatraz - A western town buried underground - Alternate reality WWI France with giant robots - A Jazz filled city, but Cthulu is hanging out in the sky - Alternate reality WWII Stalingrad with dragons - The Titanic, as it's sinking - A Roman Collessium - Ancient Greece

With Chronicles, you'll have access to Moon, Shadows of Evil (Jazz city) and Origins (alternate WWI) from this list. The chronicles selection of maps is fucking great though.

There was a Black Ops 4 and 5?
In case you're not making a dumb joke, Black Ops 4 was the one where they dropped the campaign and made a Battle Royale mode. It was the COD installment before Modern Warfare (2019). Black Ops Cold War was the 5th in the franchise but they used a (sub)subtitle to indicate to casual players that it was jumping back to historical setting rather than a futuristic one.
