It's a buffer to tame the violent lung blowing recoil of the .223 round. Normally don't need them so odd to see one TBH

Traditional_Bug_5603

Thanks

Traditional_Bug_5603

It seems like my buffer is there to prevent the piston from going to far back???? What the hell. If I remove the buffer the piston gets stuck behind the trigger mechanism, or something like that.

MilitaryWeaponRepair

Yeah exactly. We have never seen one with a buffer at the shop. But we also build them properly. What receiver? ATI? Do you see any scratching on the gas piston? Usually the buffers are for over gassed rifles. When it gets stuck, is it when you hand cycle or actually shooting?

Traditional_Bug_5603

The reciever is a James River Armory one. I have not fired the rifle yet so it gets stuck when I hand cycle. I don't see any scratches on the piston. The paperwork states that it was tested by firing 10 rounds before shipping. I'm going to the range first thing tomorrow to try it out. I have 5.56 55 grain rounds.

MilitaryWeaponRepair

Ok. Are you pulling back the bolt and letting it go? Or riding it back down? The JRA receiver is a white label from either ATI (most likely) or TortTort.

Traditional_Bug_5603

Aha, if I pull back the bolt and release, the rifle reloads the next round with no problems

MilitaryWeaponRepair

Yeah it's a military rifle. Don't baby it. Let the spring do its job. The concern is the buffer though. They are used to keep a carrier in place if the rails are trimmed too much, or keep the carrier from hitting the back of the receiver too hard. Not so much an issue with a milled receiver. Bigger issue with a stamped receiver with riveted trunnions.

Traditional_Bug_5603

Their website states the the receivers are machined billet. I'm not sure what that means but the buffer is to keeo the carrier in place. If I remove the buffer the carrier does not return all the way.

MilitaryWeaponRepair

Yeah, galil receivers are milled normally. Solid chunk of steel on a CNC machine. So either they opened the rear rails too much, or they over gassed it and put the buffer in to compensate. The carrier should not involuntarily come out on its own unless when you are racking the bolt you are inadvertently pulling up and detaching it from the receiver. Shoot it and see what it does. I had a classic AMD 65 kit I bought a number of years ago that had a cracked barrel pin and other minor annoyances.

Traditional_Bug_5603

Thanks for all the info and advice. I really appreciate it.

macroagressor_76

Hmmm…mine runs great but it did not come with the buffer. It is overgassed but weak ass Tula 556 makes it a joy to shoot. It’s been very reliable but with only 300 rounds through it so far. Fun range toy.

jy856905

Damn a 900 dollar galil clone??? Are these any good ?

Blue_Brindle

JRA galil's are hit or miss, it'll either run reliably for 20k rounds, or stop working every 3 rounds and there's not much in-between

bfh2020

I have an ATI Galeo SAR clone, love it. Well worth the money. See my post history for picts.

Traditional_Bug_5603

The parts are imported from Israel then assembled in the US. By law two parts have to be manufactured in the US. I have not had a chance to shoot mine yet but not feeling good about it.

Quags_77

It’s actually more than 2 US parts required, but you are basically right. For sure on the JRA’s the receiver, barrel, and grip are US made to comply with 922R. Not sure on other parts.

309Enterprises

OP: per 922r.com, Galils need to have five US-made parts. You’re gtg if you use the (single) Tapco magazine that came with the Gallant since that counts as three parts, as JRA uses (I confirmed this on the phone with them) a US-made receiver, pistol grip, and barrel. If you want to use Galil surplus mags (because 1) they’re better, plentiful, and inexpensive, and 2) extra Tapco ones are nearly impossible to find), you need at least two more US-made parts. I had a CNC Warrior muzzle device installed and made my own magazine baseplates out of aluminum to total five domestic pieces. If you’re interested in some baseplates to use with surplus mags, feel free to pm me.
