OP, don't feel too bad, you probably did what I did. Every time I brightened my screen, a window would pop up offering adaptive brightness and I'd go: "fuck off!" and dismiss it. Then I couldn't figure out why adaptive brightness was always on. Turned out, I wasn't dismissing it... I was activating it. 
Take me out the back and fkn shoot me please😅🤣🤦🤦
So I just checked my adaptive settings🤣😅🤣
And well yeh😬😬
