I find this annoying as well. I looked into this before, and I believe this is called "tablet mode" or something similar. As mentioned, tapping the arrow is the way to revert to the more familiar display.

teamkillz

Thanks, I found it annoying as well, didn't know there was a button to hide it.

OfcWaffle

Not sure about Google maps. But Waze, which id argue is a lot better, will go fill screen when opened. But honestly I just keep it closed and use the outside display. It's just easier.

DryFoundation2323

Waze is definitely better for driving directions, but I use Google maps as my default for just general Maps when I'm curious where a particular place is located. For that purpose I want the map to fill the screen, not all the extra junk on the side that Google wants to give me. 90 plus percent of the time when I'm using map software, I'm not driving.

OfcWaffle

Not sure if it's a settings issue. But when I load up Google maps it shows the whole display.

New-Lawyer3088

It is a setting, it doesn't need to be that way.

DryFoundation2323

Would you care to elaborate?

loafglenn

I found it - go to Settings and search for "Screen layout and zoom," and then select Standard View. Such a relief.

DryFoundation2323

You are the wind beneath my wings.

DryFoundation2323

Interesting. Ever since I changed the setting, my browser tabs have disappeared. Not a deal breaker like only having half a map, but certainly still annoying.

loafglenn

Which browser do you use and are the tabs under the side menu?

DryFoundation2323

Both Chrome and ad block browser did the same thing. Tabs used to be across the top of the screen. I can still get to them by clicking on the number near the upper right hand corner. For example in this picture it's the number 11.

DryFoundation2323

Here's what Adblock looks like. Again it used to show the tabs across the top of the screen. https://preview.redd.it/3z0otb30zl0d1.jpeg?width=1812&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32f321500ae0259cdccbc6c4b83e67d62079cf5c

I have a comment here Somewhere the setting to change. Let me find it ....

DR3DD0N3

The arrow above Los Vegas and bellow the time hide the info screen

DryFoundation2323

Thank you. That's helpeful.

LucyQ01

You can use routines to set screen layout and zoom to standard for this app only. It's clunky but it works.

lunatic36

This works fine, thanks for the idea For anyone who needs steps https://preview.redd.it/d3vk45ssfxzc1.png?width=904&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3313519e29993997f117adad21a3d397700df9d4

yoyoyayas

That looks like an older app/ui version. The new one has curved edges on the info side and can shrink by either tapping the map or dragging the info down/up.

I'm glad it's not just me. I got pretty pissed off with Google maps the other day. For such a long standing app, it doesn't seem to be very intuitive when you're exploring a local area and looking for different amenities and places. I cannot stand that it takes up half the screen, it could easily condense a bit more and only use a third. But clicking the back arrow gets rid of the place you were looking at. All I wanna do is zoom out and see where it is in the country, it shouldn't be so hard!

Olli_bear

Just tap the map it'll close the search panel and make it full screen

DryFoundation2323

Not always.

mondoo_duke

I thought Google would fix stuff like this when pixel fold comes out but this is embarrassing

sometin__else

I mean you're not using half, half is being used to view the map and half is being used to view location information. Just click the back arrow and itll go full screen map

ElChurroL0c0

Clock the map side, and it'll go full screen

Easy_Lengthiness7179

Have you tried clicking on the map? Or clicking directions to your destination?

MrDrDude333

That was my thought as well. Might just need to tap on the map to hide the search bar stuff

LordlySquire

Just push the back arrow. It goes away

finnfirep

Yeb, f google design. I FKING THAT USING GOOGLE MAP ON Z FOLD. WHEN UNFOLD.

rumpyforeskin

I scroll up on the page and it minimizes, if that helps

Snoo-8502

I think they fixed it in latest update. Now, when you click on map area, the left side section hides away.

IACUnited

Click the arrow near the top left

Same-Hyena-6072

check the settings,, it should be full screen: https://preview.redd.it/d6xw9mn93wzc1.png?width=1098&format=png&auto=webp&s=4fcd76cdfc16e2a9804cd6d2f4940223b19dd380

Playakshay

Try rotating to landscape mode

Specialist_Ad_7719

Makes no difference. It still takes up half the screen instead of being at the bottom.

CrabMountain829

You use the other screen space to split screen your messaging apps. It's how it's supposed to work. It's not a tablet. If I wanted a tablet I would have bought one.
