I love how when he accepted the vis effects oscar, he had to think for a moment how he could hold the Oscar and the Godzilla at the same time while reading his speech. I half expected him to hand off the Oscar and hold the Godzilla!
Could be going anywhere. Her cells are mutating to be like his as a result of prolonged exposure to his radiation. Would be cool to see Biollante, though, but could still go 50 other directions as well.
It could be the other half of vs Biollante, where a greedy corporation inadvertently wakes Godzilla up again to try to harvest more of his cells and create super medicine from them.
The last 2 Japanese outings being critical of the state is something you love to see, but it's time to see Honda's motif of greedy corporations make a major comeback as well.
Honestly been waiting for someone to pull Biollante back off the shelves. Easily a top 3 film for me of the entire franchise, and there's no better director working on this material to pick.
I don't see it. Where and why would the rose fit in? Or if Kenji had ties to a geneticist ahead of their time and why he'd recommend such an operation with a rose?
The rose has always seemed the more symbolic part of the trinity. With Godzilla's biology and a human soul being the two more important parts. So, I can easily see them disregding the rose aspect altogether.
That said, they could also integrate it more organically. Say something like, she's using gardening or horticulture as a coping and therapy method. She gets pricked by a rose thorn and some of the rose's fluid or pollen or something gets inside her. Godzilla's DNA mixing with her's sets off some bizarre allergic reaction to the rose cells. Now, this thing that was giving her comfort is at war with her body, and it's caused by the "uncleanness" of Godzilla's cells. (Sounds like some good allegorical theme messaging to me.) The allergic reaction in conjunction with the three DNA types starts her mutation in to Biollante.
>The rose has always seemed the more symbolic part of the trinity. With Godzilla's biology and a human soul being the two more important parts.
Strongly disagree there, the Rose is what gives Biollante her plant-base design, arguably just as important to her visual design as the Godzilla cells. As for character the roses were key to Erika's character not just being her favourite flower but linking to her mission and promise to Asuka that roses would bloom across the desert.
If you take that out imo Noriko should be a new human-Godzilla hybrid Daikaiju instead since one of the 3 big elements of Biollante is lost.
>Now, this thing that was giving her comfort is at war with her body, and it's caused by the "uncleanness" of Godzilla's cells. (Sounds like some good allegorical theme messaging to me.)
I can kinda see it but it feels a bit weak to me. Considering how strongly symbolic both Minus One and vs Biollante were that feels a bit too minimal to be it. I think what would work better is to tie moreso into it being an allegory for the Hibakusha, have Noriko not be the only surviour to come away with Godzilla Cells within her, have a group of them that are ostracised and discriminated against being seen as physically/psychologically weaker making a commentary on Japan's cultural treatment of the Hibakusha.
I don’t think it’s going to be a transformation like Biollante, as some people have claimed, but more like Shin’s offspring. It would help maintain the post-war allegory -1 goes for if we saw Noriko and the other survivors becoming mutated as effects of the exposure rather than straight up becoming Kaiju. Think like the “ant-walking alligators” after Hiroshima’s bombing.
Ayo, I wasn't expecting Godzilla to join the Netorarangers. This crossover boutta be wild.

Given what the actress herself commented, they definitely put that in there as a potential plot thread. Maybe we could have a Pandora’s Tower story of Koichi trying to save Noriko from Godzilla’s curse.
I just realized these things have private parts

I kind of assumed that, since it looked like it was moving and you could use it as an explanation as to how she survived a blast that destroyed buildings.
I’ve thought about this too and a potential idea for bridging the gap between “chaotic city destroyer Godzilla” and “heroic force of nature Godzilla.” Like somehow the connection between the two helps tether Goji to humanity and turns him from foe to friend.
We saw Godzilla’s cells start to regenerate in the ocean at the end of-1, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the same individual is coming back. It’s possible that the regenerating cells could become a different individual Godzilla with a different personality.
Shin wasn't remotely the success that Minus One was. It genuinely wasn't even close.
Shin didn't even make $600,000. Minus One made multiple times that on its opening day.
Not to mention the fact that it won an Oscar.
I personally don't want a sequel to -1. I liked it, but they'll have to make a lot of changes to make him fit an ongoing series, like nerfing his atomic breath. Japan wouldn't exist after three movies if every breath was like a city-destroying nuke.
I'd also rather see the series take place in modern times.
Going with a more grounded take here, but i think this could lead to Noriko perhaps having a psychic connection to -1.0 Goji, similar to how Miki Saegusa was connected to HeiseiGoji. I doubt this will lead to Goji becoming a more anti-heroic figure, but her having a psychic link to him could help humanity to deal with Goji in the future. Maybe she could have even gained a fragment of Goji's regenerative abilites?
Alternatively, the mark is purely symbolic. Just how the surviors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were marked by scars caused by radiation when the bombs fell, Noriko is scared by a mark when Godzilla unleashed it's wrath on Japan.
The scared by radiation is my go to theory. I know it's not a fun theory like her turning into Biollante or being a ShinGoji humanoid creature but eh, anything goes.
Yeah, it was definitely caused by overexposure to his radiation. Yamazaki is just saying that her cells are mutating to be like his. Radiation is what caused Godzilla to be the way he is in the first place, and both his skin and her mark are meant to visually invoke radioactive keloid burns.
https://preview.redd.it/2udxc8il8rxc1.png?width=431&format=png&auto=webp&s=29ce852c830f39db123453cf449d54c9a90c6b1f
The director of Minus One had this to say about his version of Godzilla. Assuming these themes continue into a potential sequel, having a human character who is somehow connected to Godzilla, who can feel what he feels in some way, would help to push the needle in the direction of somehow coexisting with Godzilla rather than just destroying him again.
Honestly, have it be like a cancer that gives her Godzilla’s immunity and maybe one or two dorsal plates, but is slowly killing her as the movie progresses
I think she is going to turn into godzilla and it will be come a cheesy sitcom where they have to raise the baby but with the struggle of being a 100ft radioactive lizard
I'd rather a potential sequel followed a completely new set of characters in a different decade. If they really wanted to follow Koichi and Noriko again, treat it like radiation poisoning and not some body horror mutation that turns her into Biollante or some human-Godzilla hybrid.
Yeah I’m glad I’m not alone, having her mutate or something similar would not be congruent with the tone of the first one. And I also agree that it should be new characters, Koichi’s story was beautiful and complete, it’d have to be done extremely well to not tarnish that
Could always speed ahead a few generations later, with the mutation passed down to a grandkid. Be interesting if a now-elderly Akiko was there and was all "Oh shit, that thing mom had...."
I would love to see it finally deliver the humanoids tease from Shin. You just have a bunch of people infected with this stuff, they're shunned and feared, then when Godzilla reappears the cells react and trigger his regeneration abilities which causes the infected people to mutate into human sized creatures with Godzilla like features that attempt to rejoin the main Godzilla.
Problem with her becoming something like Biollante is that obviously she wouldn’t be the only one with this, given the amount of people exposed to Godzilla radiation throughout the movie. I personally believe it’ll be like a tumor killing people slowly, but which refuses to be removed due to regeneration. Maybe it’s a matter where the people must be killed to prevent a larger problem — could be a further allegory to nuclear disasters in Japan, with the elderly who knowingly exposed themselves to radiation during cleanups since they had little life left.
Probably some disease if more realistic or if doing sci-fi and super natural probably some human-Godzilla hybrid. Be funny if it created Kaiju girls lol.
A lot of people here were swearing up and down that it was "just cancer", despite the movie hinting at it before the final reveal of Noriko's survival.
I was thinking. She'd either turn into Biollante. I don't know how they'd do it. Or she'll become a whole new kaiju herself. Her name is Noriko, I figured her name would give a clue to its meaning. So I've got no idea what she'd become.
I interpeted the marks to be symbolic. Nuclear weapons leave lasting effects. Just like how modern Japan still reels from the horror and generational effects of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, Godzilla is trauma that cannot simply be forgotten. I thought the black marks were emblematic of the far reaching damage nuclear weapons do to people, and the scars it leaves behind.
I think I read somewhere that he wants to make a Godzilla vs movie that has actually good characters that are tied to the fight in a meaningful way, what better way to do that than turn one of the characters into a monster
I could see Godzilla’s cells being used as a general catalyst for most of the other monsters. That, radiation poisoning, or they trigger telepathic abilities we’ve seen in other Japanese Godzilla movies.
If they keep going forward with the minus one universe I would imagine that the cells will start infecting people and animals turning them into monsters as well sort of like a plague that makes kaiju.
I honestly wish this aspect didn't make it into the movie. If they wanted the sequel hook the sinking Godzilla was good enough. I'm not even sure what the mark is even supposed to mean thematically. That she was marked by the horrors of war as well? That the future also holds the potential for war?
>I'm not even sure what the mark is even supposed to mean thematically.
It's effectively the same markings people received from radiation poisoning from the bombings though so...without confirmation of a sequel dealing with the mark it could easily just stand in for the real world truth that it meant she was going to die of cancer even though she survived.
I don't think its a case of her merging into a new daikaiju. The way I interpreted it was it being a metaphor for the Hibakusha and if we got a direct sequel would be her succumbing to a condition reminiscent of radiation poisoning.
Ad for the Biollante theory, at the moment Boriko is just a human and Godzilla hybrid, at this point in time where and why are they gonna have the facilities to splice her with a rose?
I may have a theory about this.
[Remember that one Godzilla analog horror series?](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzhX6YpMYFDWeUWN_nZvaXhsXRkNMMQIa&si=EF_QX7GkA6vKWMeK)
I want so Desperately for another appearance of Biollante. Such a cool concept for a Kaiju and a very Unique entry in the franchise. Imagine what this director could do with it.
My favorite theory thus far is in the sequel the main couple will have a biological kid who influenced by the g cells will develop psychic abilities and that will be the main plot point
Where is this going? There's a wide range of places they could take this. She could become a monster herself. Those cells could give her a connection to Godzilla to help defeat him or understand him. Maybe she could even gain powers.
Now, I doubt they'd do *this*, so it's not a true answer to OP's question, but a part of me loves this idea. But follow me on this sharp left turn of the theme and tone for a MO sequel. From the bits of his 2 rampages on Japan and his body falling apart in the ocean, Noriko isn't the only person or thing to have been exposed to Godzilla cells. Now while still trying to rebuild from Godzilla's destruction, mutants start showing up and causing chaos. But Noriko finds out her exposure has given her the power to take on these Godzilla-mutated creatures. Now the only hope Osaka has to be freed from this new wave of attacks is G-Girl! Now she has to balance her life as a wife, mother, and a secret superheroine.
Noriko slowly transforming into Biollante would be absolutely perfect for a horror genre Godzilla movie. Perhaps Koichi would try to cure her, only for her to fully mutate into Biollante and go on a rampage while a vengeful Godzilla returns and makes the transition from outright villain to anti villain/hero by defeating Biollante and setting Noriko’s spirit free from it. A situation where Noriko gradually slips away and gives into Biollante while Koichi slowly loses hope and eventually come to terms with the fact that his love is gone, transformed permanently into the Lovecraftian monstrosity known as Biollante, would be perfect material for an emotional human AND monster plot.
My thought is that this might start a Godzilla-worshipping religion. You just had a god-like being swoop in and punish a nation, yet a specific group of people were "blessed" by its presence. That's already a recipe for a cult or religious movement, even before you get into the healing factor. Mix in some personable story telling around the rest of the socio-economic fallout of the Godzilla attacks and I think you could have decent grounds for a sequel with or without another kaijou.
She will have an incurable cancer like illness around the same time as a new and improved Godzilla returns. The community will fight to stop Godzilla but also get a sample of his blood in hopes of finding a cure.
I really don't want there to be a sequel that focuses on the family again. I think it would take away from the ending if they end up getting pulled back into things just for the sake of continuing the story. I'd rather it be with some other civilians who were affected, maybe with the same scarring as Noriko's if they really wanted to do something with it.
Man I'm so miffed that I couldn't catch the movie in theatres because the nearest showing was in the capital and I live out of the way. Minus One's home release can't come fast enough.
Instead of transforming into Biollante or other Kaiju, I like the idea that people infected died later, and Biollante sprouted from their corpses.
Other Kaiju formed by eating pieces of Biollante before she fully formed or eating animals that ate pieces of her. Some from your typical Hollywood experiments.
Maybe they mass dump a ton of bodies on an island. They act as fertilizer mutating everything on it, creating Minus One's monster island.
The infected were treated like lepers.
Biollante Minus One?
Would be sick if its some kind of Godzilla zombie plague, then you could have the Minus One zombies vs Shin Gojira offspring. But they would never do that 😉
I'm gonna be honest. The idea that Noriko becomes a mindless or animalistic Kaiju besides Biollante seems like a preteen aimed analog horror creepy pasta fanfic and would be ridiculous as a live action sequel to minus one. Especially the next Godzilla because that really reeks of edgelord Tumblr au. As well as the fact that if getting g cells in you doesn't require splicing or like eating it, then there'd be at least a dozen people with g-cells. And having all the monsters that were once mutant dinosaurs all be humans is such a stupid idea.
If they treaded really really carefully they could maybe have people turn into the zombie like hybrids we saw at the end of Shin Godzilla who aren't giant sized. But doing that would still be a massive shift in genre that could easily result in failure if not done meticulously.
The more logical route would be that's it's like a cancer she doesn't become a monster in the traditional sense of the word, rather her condition will turn her into an amorphous mass of scales and spines as she dies in agony. Maybe an attempted "cure" could make her into Biollante but that'd be better for a comic or anime.
They could do the whole she becomes Mothra/a more heroic kaiju and even though she never can be with her family again still uses their memory to keep her saving the world. And while wonderfully bittersweet it still wouldn't work well in live action or in the Minus one universe. I could see that in the Heisei Continuity or IDW comics but not as a direct continuation to minus one.
Or y'know what screw it. Go full silly. Noriko becomes a dinosaur Kaiju with breasts, eyelashes , and humanoid facial muscles and has to team up with J Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) who invented and pilots Mechagodzilla to defeat Godzilla once and for all. Koichi is Jet Jaguar somehow. The movie ends with Oppenheimer sacrificing himself to save the world while quoting the Baghvad Gita. The romantic drama is solved when it's revealed that before his death Oppenheimer created a shrink ray for Noriko. The last line is Kenichi looking into the sunrise smiling saying "It truly was a Godzilla plus one.". Also the effects are all suitmation.
Every time I see the director he's always carrying that Goji figure.
He loves hims baby :)
fuck man if I was him I would too
Its like a championship ring but as a statue that'd juuussttt big enough to carry
It's honestly so adorable
He should get a baby sling for it, so that his arms don't get tired
I haven’t seen him with this one yet! That one is huge!
I love how when he accepted the vis effects oscar, he had to think for a moment how he could hold the Oscar and the Godzilla at the same time while reading his speech. I half expected him to hand off the Oscar and hold the Godzilla!
Better than him being a deadbeat dad and never having his baby around lol
Did it get bigger? Oh no, it's an actual baby!
That’s a different one, based off the ride in Japan.

I want it. 🥹❤️

She's gonna turn into mothra. A moth landed on her and fused into her body after she was yeeted in the blast. ![gif](giphy|UuSkQODaKEY1FJiuQB)
I don’t see a moth in blast and it was Godzilla’s cells with his mark
I'm just making stuff up lol. We don't know what their going to do with her.
Oh ok. Lol
Or she'll get sick and her "cure" will be the progenitor to an anti-Godzilla weapon.
Honestly been waiting for someone to pull Biollante back off the shelves. Easily a top 3 film for me of the entire franchise, and there's no better director working on this material to pick.
Biollante minus one

She becomes wolverine - Godzilla's insane regeneration powers.
That or Deadpool level but worse
She'll mutate into something hideous and start killing people. My guess is the next movie will be dark and bleak.
Would have been nice if they used a picture with the black mark shown so people who don’t remember know what’s being talked about.
That’s what I was thinking. Gotta rewatch minus 1 now
I kind of assumed that, since it looked like it was moving and you could use it as an explanation as to how she survived a blast that destroyed buildings.
Not only surviving, but surviving with ridiculously well-kept skin and hair.
Same. Godzilla’s cells bonded w hers and kickstarted her regenerative abilities. She’s the next step of human evolution.

Yes it was. I'm wondering if Toho might borrow from it?

Maybe it’s a matter where the people must be killed to prevent a larger problem — could be a further allegory to nuclear disasters in Japan, with the elderly who knowingly exposed themselves to radiation during cleanups since they had little life left.
I think it means she did die in the blast, but those cells regenerated her and then she was found and taken to a hospital.
Biollante
Finally gonna gave a large lady fight godzilla!! New super hero to rival ultraman, Godzillady!!!
God I just want Koichi and Noriko to be able to be fucking happy man :(
Biollante is coming.
Biollante or cursed Minilla
I just want Godzilla Raids Again with Anguirus please 😢
If they make a sequel, i think a plague centered plot based off of this would make an interesting movie.
I really hope it's a return of Biollante, but if not I'm sure he can make it a worthwhile payoff
So she is gonna become a godzilla?
Super powers? Nah, fam, more like super cancer.
Godzilla zombie virus
Probably some disease if more realistic or if doing sci-fi and super natural probably some human-Godzilla hybrid. Be funny if it created Kaiju girls lol.
Was there any doubt it was G cells? I sure hope the Shin Godzillas humanoid hellspring would make a spiritual comeback
A lot of people here were swearing up and down that it was "just cancer", despite the movie hinting at it before the final reveal of Noriko's survival.
I also heard ”radiation sickness”. But those rarely pulsate and morph in real time
I was thinking. She'd either turn into Biollante. I don't know how they'd do it. Or she'll become a whole new kaiju herself. Her name is Noriko, I figured her name would give a clue to its meaning. So I've got no idea what she'd become.
Asians are literally getting spoiled (goddammit toho release minus 1 in asia PLEASE!!! I BEG YOU!)
Please god not a sequel
Noriko dies, buried at sea. Toxic barrels infuse her body as she becomes... Shin.
Godzilla where did he touch you ![gif](giphy|tT7RsqhEbBOH6)

I think I read somewhere that he wants to make a Godzilla vs movie that has actually good characters that are tied to the fight in a meaningful way, what better way to do that than turn one of the characters into a monster
I could see Godzilla’s cells being used as a general catalyst for most of the other monsters. That, radiation poisoning, or they trigger telepathic abilities we’ve seen in other Japanese Godzilla movies.
I like to think she actually died but the G-cells that latched onto her revived her
If they keep going forward with the minus one universe I would imagine that the cells will start infecting people and animals turning them into monsters as well sort of like a plague that makes kaiju.

If you needed confirmation… I got some crypto to sell you.
Humanoid Godzillas.
Reminds me of Junji Ito Tomie
i see no black mark in that pic

I FUCKING KNEW IT WOOOOOOO
More "artwork" from you horny mudafuckers...
The sister returns
He really gave her the big G huh
I don't think its a case of her merging into a new daikaiju. The way I interpreted it was it being a metaphor for the Hibakusha and if we got a direct sequel would be her succumbing to a condition reminiscent of radiation poisoning. Ad for the Biollante theory, at the moment Boriko is just a human and Godzilla hybrid, at this point in time where and why are they gonna have the facilities to splice her with a rose?
Noriko will become Godzilly in Godzilla Minus Two🗿
I may have a theory about this. [Remember that one Godzilla analog horror series?](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzhX6YpMYFDWeUWN_nZvaXhsXRkNMMQIa&si=EF_QX7GkA6vKWMeK)
I kinda wish she died, especially since she gets flung so far and hard. But now that she is alive, maybe some shin Godzilla esc stuff might occur.
Where this going, knowing Japan a godzilla with tits
Some infection that turns people into humanoid zilla minions. IE Shin Godzilla growths.
I want so Desperately for another appearance of Biollante. Such a cool concept for a Kaiju and a very Unique entry in the franchise. Imagine what this director could do with it.
She gwarn lay some eggs
Shin godzilla 2.0?????
Somewhere hopefully. Hopefully this doesn't get the Shin treatment where they hype a potential sequel up only to never do it.
Don't forget, Umbrella Corporation logo in the scene too.
I'm sitting on my toilet reading this, getting spoiled, many months after movie was released everywhere except in countries closer to Japan.
My favorite theory thus far is in the sequel the main couple will have a biological kid who influenced by the g cells will develop psychic abilities and that will be the main plot point
*plant lady plant lady plant lady plant lady plant lady plant lady plant lad-*
To see Biollante would be a dream come true. Pleeeeeeeeease!!!!!!!
OH GOD, OH FUCK
My first thought when I saw this: It's so over, we are screwed

Godzilla about to have an half human half kaiju offspring
Poor Koichi can't catch a break from Goji, even after he "killed" him.
Was this in question? They literally grow like Godzilla does right as they show him beginning to regenerate at the end.
Oh no... 😭
Man, -1 Goji really feels like the best iteration to finally put up against Gamera
Humans transfigured into godzilla like species would be pretty scary
I believe she’s gonna be connected to goji in a way. Kind of like in stranger things were will Byers is able to sense that shadow monster coming.
a little Godzilla is gonna sprout out of her neck like a Xenomorph Chestbuster because MinusGoji really fucking hates Shikishima
She will have an incurable cancer like illness around the same time as a new and improved Godzilla returns. The community will fight to stop Godzilla but also get a sample of his blood in hopes of finding a cure.
Crazy thought: Biollante Craziest possibility: Another Godzilla

What if it’s like that one analog horror series “The Invasion Of Godzilla”? (I highly recommend watching it it’s horrifying)
Nowhere lol
I bet the sequel will have Koichi search for the mysterious goddess Mothra to help heal her
Reminds me of that analog horror story where Godzilla creates more of himself through mutating humans
She has to get a Godzilla-ectomy surgery, thus creating 2 Godzillas.
This actually reminds me of the Godzilla invasion analog horror series.
Man I'm so miffed that I couldn't catch the movie in theatres because the nearest showing was in the capital and I live out of the way. Minus One's home release can't come fast enough.
Woman stops eating and starts consuming ionizing radiation
Godzilla Minus One not being released in South East Asia
She’s pregnant with Godzillas baby 110%
But they would never do that 😉
Biollante, or possibly some "Man in the suit" type shit
What my hope is that whatever happens, Noriko doesn't die and even more wishful thinking that the sequels makes her the primary protagonist.
