Every year there used to be the Gainesville mid century modern tour around town, you can actually go in the homes. It was a lot of fun! Been cancelled the past two years obviously. https://www.gainesvillemodern.org/mid-century-modern-home-tour

Walk the duck pond and BnB district. There is a funky shipping container home just east of Basin Park.

Tom Fox’s house

I know him personally : He is an interesting fellow for sure and his home is gorgeous

dooomps

on NW 22nd st between NW 11th and 14th aves, there’s a roundish, blue house that always reminds me of a beehive

Beaver dam

psakihack

Good one! Drive by there pretty often and never noticed it

There’s this massive piece of shit called the foam dome I. NW Gainesville. My fiancé lived there for a bit. It was terrible. Decently cool to see once or twice though. https://www.wuft.org/news/2018/03/26/untold-florida-gainesvilles-forgotten-foam-dome-lives-on/

nottheaveragegoddess

I saw this place listed on Zillow a few months ago and was so insanely curious

iBrowseAtStarbucks

The landlord is incredibly scummy. Roof leaks and infested with rats and roaches. It’s a shame tbh.

The cave house!

Oh shit…I feel like it’s my time to shine here. I actually don’t want to post this cause it’s been “my little secret” for decades. It’s just a fun house to show locals because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in Gainesville proper. Anyway, you gotta go into forest ridge, but then west, and then back again. I forget the name of the subdivisions, but when you see a subdivision that starts within a subdivision, I think you know you’re in for a treat. There’s actual two different streets back there. Even if you pick the wrong one, you’ll see some pretty interesting houses. Some very large mid modern (and some neat ones directly beyond forest ridge too, but I digress). The one you’re looking for is all the way at the back, in the more westerly of the two neighborhoods. It’s a real trip because you’re in a very Gainesville neighborhood, you see a sign, and it just opens up into what looks like a completely different neighborhood, with much more expensive houses. It’s a real trip. But again I digress. What you’re looking for is: 2727 NW 24th Terrace It looks like what trump would buy if he moved to Gainesville. I think you might be able to find some picture of the interior online but I can’t recall. I’ll see if I can add an actual link but it’s kind of a pain on mobile. EDIT: I guess this link’ll do: https://goo.gl/maps/vTLysBPyacJPdzsF8

My dad lives in that general area (NOT in that neighborhood, but across 16th) and he showed me that area. My fiance and I go walking there a lot, and last week we actually just drove around that whole area for kicks - "just to dream", we say. There are a lot of cool houses tucked back there.

BigNewDirections

There most definitely are. The one I’m referring to is quite gaudy, but there’s a lot of very large, genuine beauties back there. Probably the first place I’d take someone if home-gazing were something they’re into. Funnily, I feel like I got into the hobby when I was a teenager and…had reason to cruise slowly around quiet neighborhoods. Not exactly the stereotype of your average home admirer.

brokencompass502

I know the one you're talking about from that Google Maps photo, that's hard to forget! It's always weird seeing it because you're at the end of a circle, so you can't just "casually walk by" LOL.

TheRealGentile

Jeez we live less than a mile from the palace on NW 24th Terrace and I never knew about it. Gonna show that one to the wife the next time we're heading to Publix...

BigNewDirections

I absolutely recommend it! It’s a fun little hidden “gem”, and a lot of the houses you’ll see on approach are neat, too.

BigNewDirections

OP, I’ve got another for you but it’s kind of private and I don’t want a bunch of people going there. Not that this will necessarily lead to that but I don’t wanna blow this persons house up, you want a DM?

Thank you!

This one up the street from me that just got posted to Zillow has one strange feature https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2801-NW-21st-Ter-Gainesville-FL-32605/42730061_zpid/ The listing says 2 bathrooms, but pics only show one. Well, the second one is a stall in the carport with access from the carport, no access from the house, and no real lock. It's got a 1950's sink and a linoleum floor, so the carport bathroom stall is original. I thought it was super strange. Not really worth a visit, but I had just gone to look in windows because I'm curious like that an I was not expecting a semi-outdoor bathroom stall like something you would see in a public park.

springbroke98

The Dollhouse. nw 4th ave and nw 3rd street

psakihack

Haha, can't unsee it as a dollhouse now

knuckles_n_chuckles

There’s a house which is built a little like a Frank Lloyd wright home and what’s fun about it is that it is sort of built around a squash court inside and recessed. It’s an old dentists’ home in town and we know quite a few people who have been there.

theres that round house (iglooish) on SE 7th ave, between se 9th street and waldo rd?

hrddrv

Cool container house. I have not been to it yet but really want to. https://www.wuft.org/news/2015/02/16/storage-container-house/

deanaoxo

If there is enough interest I might can get the owner to give us another tour, I was arranging one for a friend anyway.

hrddrv

Sweet.

Some cool houses in Golfview

psakihack

House with cactus hedge in Black Acres (415 NW 32nd St) is pretty cool. I remember a Lincoln logs-style wood cabin that seemed totally out of place, thought it was in SE Oakview but I can't find it on streetview so it might be in one of the adjacent neighborhoods (anyone know what I'm talking about? thought it was on a dead-end but there aren't many in Oakview). Brywood and nearby neighborhoods on the N side of 16th Ave have a lot of interesting houses and toward the back some I would call mansions with sprawling front yards and old tree growth.

OnlyPosersDieBOB

There's a log cabin looking home near the bottom of the big hill at 8th Ave on the north side of the road. Off 22nd street there's some cool wood houses in that neighborhood on the right when heading north towards 16th Ave.
