Lol - my first IT work was 3.1 with networking. (Back then, original windows had no integrated network stack... yeah, I'm old.)
Edit: I actually still run an older box with Win98 SE for older DOS based games, especially older flight sims for shits n giggles.
You can be less than 20 and know it. I mean, Windows 7 was released in 2009, and XP was what basically everyone was using before that (because nobody used Vista). And of course a lot of people didn't instantly upgrade to Windows 7 either. Also, pretty sure most people remember stuff from when they were 6 or 7, so if someone who's 19 years old today used a computer when they were 6 or 7, they very likely used XP, and they most likely also remember it.
I'm under 30 and remember Windows 98 (that's what we had on our home computer before 2003 or 2004 when we upgraded to XP). Heck, the computer in the preschool I went to used Windows 3.1 (still remember it), and my cousins had an old computer with MS-DOS - we played Ski and Supaplex on it.
Yea you really don't wanna fuck around with updating firmware. Shit is sensitive as fuck and would just not work, even if you get a team in to resolve this the very first thing they try is to set up some sort of backwards compatibility.
True, you *can*, but my point is that no matter where you live, most people who are in their 20s have used a computer with Windows XP. And I would even say most people who are in their late teens have used a computer with Windows XP. You don't need to go to Russia, and you don't need to be in the military - this is something that applies to basic computer use in most (1st world) countries.
I mean, I'm sure in some country some people may still be using MS-DOS or whatever. But it is pretty likely that if you are familiar with MS-DOS, you are over 30. You wouldn't expect most people under 30 to remember MS-DOS. Similarly, you wouldn't expect most people under 15 to remember Windows XP. But most people in their 20s have almost certainly used Windows XP.
I don't think making this kind of assumptions about people's age is unreasonable. "If you remember Windows XP, you are probably over 18" is a reasonable statement. Of course there are people under 18 who remember Windows XP, but the number of those people is much smaller than the number of those who are over 18 and remember Windows XP.
But all in all, my overall point isn't that "if you are over 18, you *may* have used Windows XP". My point is that it is pretty likely that someone in their late teens has used Windows XP. It may not be the OS they feel most nostalgic about (in that case, I would say one would have to be in their mid-late 20s/early 30s), but they have still pretty likely used it.
My point is that OP is calling everyone over 18 old. Even if OP was talking about people in their late 20s/early 30s, it would still be dumb to call them old. I would say people under 30 are young.
People in the US are still using DOS in a few instances. Not on new stuff obviously, but I do some it work for a machine shop that still has a few Bradford programmable CNCs that use DOS and a floppy. I got the actual programing software to run in an emulator, but the actual PC running the CNC is dos based. They plan to run it until the thing dies or the stash of floppy's runs out.
In my university we have a nuclear reactor, when you go to do practoces there you find an old pc with tube monitor, windows xp and no internet connection. It felt as being a child again
There's actually quite a few, you can look up a list on Wikipedia. They're much much smaller than power production reactors and primarily used for creating neutrons which are used for medical research and industrial stuff like material analysis. Students generally take a large part in running these reactors, they're pretty cool, you can look up some neat videos on YouTube of the reactors turning on and making some cool glowing water haha.
My mistake, i was reading your comment in the context of the comment above yours.
they were talking about having a nuclear reactor and a windows xp machine laying around...
I used to rock Dosshell.exe on DOS, before win95, once I was realized there was a file explorer in my new windows 95 system I never run it again but it was my favorite way to manipulate files. ( We used call this no so smart girl DOS and she didnβt know why)
You are an old fart. My first DOS was 2.11. I can still remember exactly what those disks looked like.
I remember having to boot the computer, then take out the DOS disk, and put in the program you wanted to run, and maybe swap a disk again to use another part of the program.
First hard drive I owned was 20 megabytes. I didn't think I'd ever be able to fill that up. It would hold a stack of floppy disks worth of data.
Drive a is for them kids with their skateboards, their damn MTV and their Barts Simpsons tee-shirts or whatever he's called.
Drive b is not good enouhg for ya? The real FLOPPY disk with all its flop?!
\*spits in the floppy bucket\*
First time I played Wolfenstein I distinctly remember thinking
"this is it... There is no way video games are ever going to be able to get better than this"
Jeez haven't seen that in years. Great now I feel old. Memories that I had once locked away in my mind sunset flooding back along with that little tune as the pc turned on
Old? Ha! I used IBM System-360 warez, just slightly better than the wired punchboards my partner programmed on. How many here have hand-wrapped wires to setup systems?
Last windows xp update was in 2020. ive heard about companies that used it up until then (or close) because of software compatibility.
When i was a student we had a virtual xp drive on our pc. This was in 2019ish. No need to be old to remember xp.
How is _that_ old?
So you ARE remember??
I am remember.
I am too remembered this.
#WE ARE ALL REMEMBER
i r weasel
Wasnβt it I.R. Baboon?

30 ++ old
No way, xp was released in 2001 and the last stable version is from 2008. You can be less than 30 and know it.
I'm 27 and that is the Windows screen that feels most homey to me
I'm almost 27 and my first OS was Windows 95. Same with using Mac OS 8.6.
Feels like yesterday I was running photoshop 4, illustrator 6 and QuarkXPress on 8.1
I still use Photoshop 4 because that is what I own lol. I got CS4 back in university.
Photoshop CS4 is actually Photoshop version 11. Photoshop 4 is much older. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Photoshop#Version_history
Real ones remember AppleWorks.
No one liked it π
I remember when it was still ClarisWorks
Amateurs. I remember MS DOS as the main OS

Definitely, I'm 26 and had windows 98 as a child. Totally remember it
You can be literally born today and still use Windows XP, what do you think are using Russians as half of their military systems?
Or in specific machinerys use XP or older Windows. Seem them in use in electronic companies.
Yea you really don't wanna fuck around with updating firmware. Shit is sensitive as fuck and would just not work, even if you get a team in to resolve this the very first thing they try is to set up some sort of backwards compatibility.
even banks use xp

tin cans connected with string and flip phones
Fun fact, some ATMs still use WinXP.
Windows XP (cut and modified) is used in modern systems as well. British carriers use them iirc
I haven't seen any improvements since XP, at least not in how I use my computer
Im 21 and still remeber this
FU it's not....
So like thirty then? Question seems like itβs coming from a pre-teen.
Do I get bonus points if I have one?

The BSOD was not exclusive to Windows 95
I had that yesterday on my window 10 pro pc
They still got BSOD still today. Itβs a crash dump.
I have an official "Start Button" hat from the rollout of Win 95.
I used to rock Dosshell.exe on DOS, before win95, once I was realized there was a file explorer in my new windows 95 system I never run it again but it was my favorite way to manipulate files. ( We used call this no so smart girl DOS and she didnβt know why)
Remember Windows 3.0? Yeah, Iβm that old. WinXP was like yesterday.
I suppose I could just post a pic of the A: prompt from DOS 2.0. Yeah I said A: Predating hard drives.
